Last year, four NU wrestlers Matt Delguyd, Nick Hayes, Mike Kimberlin and John Velez qualified for the NCAA Championships with impressive performances at the Conference Championships. It was the most NCAA re p resentatives for the Wildcats since 2000. This year s Championships will feature eight seeded Cats the highest being Jake Herbert s (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) No. 2 nod at 174 lbs. Herbert and his teammates will know their opponents on Friday, March 4 when brackets are announced. In 2004, then-sophomore Delguyd posted the best finish for the Cats, claiming fourth at 197 lbs. after coming in seeded eighth. As a whole, Northwestern had 33.5 points to end up in 11th place. Two Cats Named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week Jake Herbert (R-S Fr.) Jan. 5, 2005 Herbert (pictured right) earned his first-career Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor following a historic two-day performance at the 2004 Midlands Championships. He captured the title at 174 lbs. by upsetting No. 5 seed Mitch Hancock of Central Michigan, 116. It was the first championship victory by an NU undergraduate since Andre Allen won the 142-lb. title in 1974. The victor y over Hancock was the third-consecutive upset for the seventh-seeded Herbert. He dropped No. 2 Pete Friedl of Illinois in the quarter final, 52, before defeating No. 6 Nick Passolano of Iowa State in the semifinals by the same score. At the time, Herber t s 5-0 performance at the Midlands improved his overall season record to 7-0 and he would run his record to 22-0 before eventually losing in a rematch against Friedl. Mike Tamillow (Fr.) Feb. 2, 2005 Tamillow (pictured below) earned his first-career Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor after providing one of many memorable individual Wildcat per formances in Northwestern s 22-19 epic comeback win over Iowa January 29. With the 'Cats trailing 19-9, the Oak Park, Ill. native matched up against fifth-ranked Paul Bradley at 184 lbs. Down 3-2 in the closing seconds, the freshman scored a single point with an escape to knot the score. He then slammed Bradley a 2004 all-american to the mat just as the buzzer sounded for two points and a 5-3 win. The win was Tamillow s 20th of the year. 4 Wildcats Beat Hawkeyes for First Time in 37 Years Northwestern 22, Iowa 19 Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005 For 37 years, going up against the historic Hawkeye program for Northwestern was not unlike tr ying to fend off a shark with a butter knife. But the then-21st-ranked Cats changed all that Jan. 29 by bringing the eighth-ranked Hawkeyes to their knees with an epic comeback. The Wildcats clawed out from a 19-3 hole to tie the match at 19-19 heading into the final weight class. There, John Velez brought the victory home by grinding out a 10-8 decision with a bum shoulder to put the Cats ahead 22-19. Velez victory was the last of five-straight Wildcat wins, helping Northwestern topple Iowa for the first time since 1968. Ryan Lang earned Northwestern its first victory of the night at 141 lbs. by upsetting 11th-ranked Alex Tsirtsis 10-4. The victor y knotted the teams at 3-3 and improved Lang's season duals record to 10-0. Before Northwestern could blink, though, Iowa rambled off a major decision victory and two pins in the following three weight classes to gain a sizeable 19-3 advantage. But just when it looked like all signs were pointing towards another Hawkeye victor y... Enter 2004 Midlands Champions Jake Herbert. Herbert came into the match a per fect 18-0 on the year and ranked fourth in the nation at 174 lbs. He certainly showed it by lighting a fire under the Cats with a quick pin of Lofthouse at 1:05. It was Herber t s fifth pin of the year and quickly vaulted Nor thwestern back to within striking distance at 19-9. Mike Tamillow followed with one of the best per formances of the night. Tamillow matched up against fifth-ranked Paul Bradley (also a 2004 Midlands Champion). The two treated the crowd to a methodical, bruising match that went the distance. In the closing seconds, Tamillow found himself down 3-2. With his match and Northwestern's hopes of an overall victor y hanging in the balance, the true freshman scored a single point with an escape to knot the score. He then slammed the all-american to the mat just as the buzzer sounded. The referee motioned to award Tamillow two points for the victory and Welsh-Ryan Arena erupted. The Hawkeye lead was cut to 19-12. Matt Delguyd fed off of Tamillow s last-second victory and the energy of the crowd to edge the Cats even closer. When he earned a 10-2 major decision at 197 lbs. over Adam Feller, a raucous student section had officially gone insane with excitement. Now down only 19-16, there was no question Nor thwestern had the momentum heading into the final two bouts, but next up for the Wildcats Dustin Fox was yet another Hawkeye ranked in the nation's top-10 this time seventh-ranked Matt Fields at heavyweight. Fox jumped out to a 5-1 lead, and with the all-american Candidate Velez waiting in the wings at 125 lbs., the crowd could sense a Northwestern victory in the making. But Fields battled back to even the score at 5-5 and again at 6-6. With 15 seconds remaining, Fox went into the down position, needing an escape for the victory. He eventually broke free of Fields' grasp to earn his 10th victor y of the year and tie the teams at 19-19. The decisive match came down to the 125-lb. weight class, featuring Velez and Hawkeye Charlie Falck. The two had met nearly a month ago at the Midlands, where Velez earned a 5-1 decision. Velez turned in one of the gutsier efforts of the night. Competing with a bum should, he earned a 10-8 decision to snap Northwestern s 37-year drought against the Hawkeyes. All told, the Cats won the final five weight classes to come back from a 19-3 deficit.
