The History of Delta Downs The original Delta Downs was located in St. Joseph, La. and was opened in 1964. It was built by Lee Berwick, who loved American Quarter Horses and wanted a place for him and other owners to compete. Berwick purchased 240 acres of land in Vinton, La. in the early 1970 s and began to build a new racetrack. Featuring a six-furlong oval, the track was designed to accommodate mainly Quarter Horses. It included 1,200 stalls and opened to the public on Sept. 20, 1973. Throughout the years, Delta Downs Quarter Horse season has drawn some of the sport s top athletes. AQHA champions like Mr Jess Perry, Develop a Plan, Johnny Vittoro, Kool Kue Baby, Oak Tree Special and Vals Fortune have all competed at Delta Downs. Berwick owned and operated Delta Downs until 1999, when it was sold to Shawn Scott and a group of investors. Scott and other horseracing interests lobbied the state to get slot machines legalized at racetracks in order to boost horseracing purses. In a relatively short period of time, the law was changed and plans were made to place a casino at Delta Downs. Before the new casino opened its doors, Delta Downs was sold once again, this time to the Boyd Gaming Corporation of Las Vegas. Boyd took over operation of Delta Downs in 2001 and opened the casino, with nearly 1,500 slot machines, in mid-february of 2002. The new casino generated record purses at Delta Downs. During the upcoming 2007-2008 Thoroughbred Meeting, the track plans to offer over $200,000 in daily purse money during its 93-day season. The increase in purses allowed Delta Downs to develop one of the nation s richest events, Boyd Gaming s $1 Million Delta Jackpot. The Jackpot purse ranks second only to the Grade I $2 million Bessemer Trust Breeders Cup Juvenile Stakes each year for 2-year-old Thoroughbreds. This year s Delta Jackpot, which will take place on Friday, Dec. 7, is the only graded Thoroughbred race contest at Delta Downs each year. In 2005 the race was granted Grade III status by the North American Graded Stakes Committee. It is also the richest Grade III Thoroughbred race in the country. In addition to the Jackpot, Delta Downs also offers an important event for 2- year-old fillies each year. Boyd Gaming s $300,000 Delta Princess Stakes Powered by Youbet.com will also take place on December 7. 7

Bird Makes History in Jackpot Miss Atlantic City Triumphs for Desormeaux Brothers The fourth running of Boyd Gaming s $1 Million Delta Jackpot Stakes took place on Friday, December 1 and it marked an important milestone for the Vinton, Louisiana racetrack. On that night, after more than 33 years of horse racing, Delta Downs hosted its first ever graded Thoroughbred event. Birdbirdistheword winning the 2006 edition of Boyd Gaming s $1 Million Delta Jackpot (Grade III). Louisiana jockey Robby Albarado in the saddle. The important date was originally scheduled to take place one year earlier, but when Hurricane Rita stormed through town prior to the start of the 2005-2006 season, the first Delta Jackpot to carry grade III status was delayed by 12 months. The first three Delta Jackpot Stakes in 2002, 2003 and 2004 did not carry a grade at all. Racing fans were rewarded for their patience as talented young Florida-bred Birdbirdistheword turned a powerful rally into a $600,000 payday. The property of Raymond H. Cottrell, Sr. was ridden to victory by Louisiana s own Robby Albarado, who accepted the mount from nationally known trainer Kenneth McPeek. Birdbirdistheword defeated Bob Baffert s trainee, Pirates Deputy by three-quarters of a length while Xchanger wound up another three lengths behind in third. The winner covered the 1 1/16-mile distance over a fast track in 1:45.42. Delta Jackpot Night has become the centerpiece of Delta Downs Thoroughbred season each year, but there s another race that gets plenty of attention on the same program annually. It s Boyd Gaming s $300,000 Delta Princess Stakes Powered by Youbet.com, and it features 2- year-old fillies looking to make their mark. In 2006 the Delta Princess Stakes became a family affair, as Hall of Fame jockey Kent Photo: Jeff Coady/Coady Photography 15

Bird Makes History in Jackpot Continued Desormeaux booted home Miss Atlantic City for trainer J. Keith Desormeaux, who also happens to be Kent s older brother. Miss Atlantic City, who is owned by Peter L. Cantrell, also provided her jockey with his second win on Delta s richest evening of racing. In 2002 Kent Desormeaux rode Outta Here to a score in the inaugural running of Boyd Gaming s Delta Jackpot Stakes when it carried a purse of $500,000. This year s Delta Jackpot and Delta Princess Stakes, along with the $75,000 Sam s Town and $75,000 Treasure Chest Stakes, are scheduled to take place on Friday night, December 7. With such a rich and colorful history already in place, this year s big night promises to deliver even more excitement as some of the nation s top horses and horsemen once again invade southwest Louisiana to compete for the big prize. TRACKTrivia -Outta Here (2003) and Closing Argument (2005) finished 2nd and 7th respectively in the Kentucky Derby after competing in Boyd Gaming's $1 Million Delta Jackpot Stakes as 2- year-olds. -Delta Downs built 20 new barns on the backside after Hurricane Rita damaged the property in September, 2005. Louisiana Premier Night The Bayou State Has Plenty to be Proud of There are two race nights during the Thoroughbred season each year at Delta Downs that bring out the best and brightest equine athletes around. One is Delta Jackpot Night in December, and the other is Louisiana Premier Night, when the track offers $1 million in total purse money distributed over 10 stakes races for horses bred in Louisiana. The richest race on Louisiana Premier Night is the $200,000 Louisiana Premier Night Championship, which features older horses traveling 1-1/16 miles. Last year s Championship turned into a showcase event for Costa Rising, who dominated five rivals en route to winning the big race by an astounding 5-1/4 lengths with jockey Mario Reyes in the saddle. Costa Rising s victory in the Louisiana Premier Night Championship put an exclamation mark on his season at Delta Downs. Just three months earlier the Joseph Boxie trainee won the $100,000 Gold Cup. Another horse who enjoyed multiple stakes winning success during the 06-07 campaign while also winning a race on Louisiana Premier Night was Tortuga Straits. The Ralph Irwin trainee took the $125,000 Louisiana Premier Night Prince with visiting jockey Luis Quinonez in the irons. Earlier in the season Tortuga Straits was awarded a stakes win in the $150,000 Jean Lafitte after originally finishing second to Go Poppa Fooze, who was disqualified. The top performance by a jockey in last year s Louisiana Premier Night racing activity came when veteran rider Kerwin Clark booted home three of the 10 winners on the program. Clark scored tallies with Z Storm in the $55,000 LPN Gentlemen Starter, Indigo Girl in the $100,000 LPN Matron, and Raspberry Wine in the $150,000 LPN Distaff. This year s Louisiana Premier Night will take place on Saturday, February 2. Post time is set for 6:30 p.m. Make plans to be at Delta Downs for 10 exciting races and $1 million in total purse money. Quarter Horse Season Highlights 2008 Racing Season Bank of America East Regional Challenge Night (Saturday, May 17, 2008) Pending AHQA approval Delta Downs Quarter Horse season is one of the best in the country each year. One of the reasons for its success is the fact that it traditionally brings out America s fastest athlete to compete for large purses and entries into even bigger events later in the year. One such program will take place on Saturday, May 17 when horses from all over the country compete on Bank of America East Regional Challenge Night. The evening of excitement features six stakes races that will qualify each winner for the finals of next year s Bank of America Challenge Championship, to be held for the first time ever in the state of Louisiana at Evangeline Downs. The Bank of America East Regional Challenge lineup includes the Grade II Bank of Amerca East Championship Challenge, the Grade III Ford East Challenge, the Grade III Bayer Legend East Derby Challenge, the John Deere East Challenge, the Red Cell East Challenge, and the Fort Dodge East Challenge. Last year s winner of the Bank of America East Championship Challenge was Angelas Toast, who will compete in the 15th annual 26 Grade I Bank of America Challenge Championship at Los Alamitos in Southern California on November 3rd. Firecracker Futurity and Derby (Saturday, July 5, 2008) One of the most anticipated race days each year during the Quarter Horse season is Firecracker Futurity and Derby Night, which will take place next year on Saturday, July 5. The Firecracker Futurity and Derby offer large purses for openbred horses. Over the years, the races have produced some of the biggest stars in Quarter Horse racing, like Johnny Vittoro, Royal Bushwacker, Develop a Plan and Hemps Classic Dash. In recent years the Firecracker races have been dominated by trainer M. Heath Taylor, who has swept both races in three consecutive years. In 2005 he won the futurity with Check the Account and the derby with Make A Secret. In 2006 he saddled My First Passion in the futurity and St Pats First in the derby. And last year Taylor completed the trifecta with wins by Coronas Leaving You and Goinbye in the futurity and derby respectively. Qualifying trials for the Firecracker races are normally held about two weeks prior to race day. Louisiana Showcase Night (Saturday, July 13, 2008) The richest program during the Quarter Horse season each year is Louisiana Showcase Night, which features seven stakes races for horses bred right here in Louisiana. The richest event on Louisiana Showcase Night, and traditionally the richest race of the season, is the Grade I Lee Berwick Memorial Futurity. The race is named in honor of the late Lee Berwick, who built Delta Downs and opening it in Vinton, Louisiana back in 1973. Mr. Berwick passed away in 2001. Last year s Lee Berwick Futurity was worth a staggering $431,950 and was won by Senor Seabolt, with leading rider Alfonso Lujan in the saddle. In 2003 the race was won by Vals Fortune, who was later named AQHA Champion 2- year-old and AQHA Champion 2- year-old Gelding that year. Vals Fortune also went on to surpass the $1 million mark in career earnings, one of only 43 horses to ever accomplish that feat.
