AMDG SAINTS WEEKLY SPORTS AND CULTURE Vol 18 No 27 1st - 8th October 2018 1st XI v St John s College Result : Won by 6 runs Saints win in thriller of a game Yet another beautiful day presented itself as St George s took on St John s at St John s. The pitch was rock hard and had only a touch of grass on it - a perfect batting wicket. We won the toss and elected to bat first (a non brainer considering Saints has only lost one game batting first this season). We got off to a perfect start with T Bopoto and G Chirawu bashing the ball all around the ground leaving the St John s opening bowlers dumbstruck. The partnership reached 50 after the first 5 overs obviously the T/20 practice was paying off. Sadly indecision between the two openers caused a run out which seemed to have been the only possible way that St John s could have taken a wicket. The runs continues to flow as L Precious and G Chirawu continued to bludgeon the St John s bowling attack. The fall of 2 wickets brought in the ever consistent E Bawa and together with G Chirawu the two built a wonderful partnership. However a lack of concentration brought the demise of G Chirawu who had a wonderful knock of 72. Some quick fire blasting by M Davies accelerated the run rate even more with us coasting to the 200 run mark. However a flurry of wickets put us under pressure. But the ever reliable E Bawa was still at the crease. E Bawa continued to thrash the ball around determined not to be stranded as he had been before against Falcon. A Magnificent display of batting gave him well deserved 100* not out. The first of the year for 1st team! We were eventually bowled out for 295 after only 44 overs proving that it was definitely a batsman's pitch. St John s came in to bat before lunch. The bowling did not go as planned with St John s making 51 runs for no wickets after 5 overs. The lunch break came at the perfect time allowing us to gather our thoughts and halt the St John s onslaught. Saints came back out with intent, however St John s continued to score runs freely. The breakthrough finally came through and another quick wicket followed courtesy of G Chirawu. Tight bowling from L Precious, M Khumbula and G Chirawu brought us back into the game. Wickets continued to fall but St John s somehow managed to keep piling on the runs with lower order comers. St John s only needed 40 runs to win off the last 8 overs but with only 2 wickets in hand. A fantastic run out by G Chirawu gave us hope but with only 20 runs to get St John s were the clear favourites. H Patel came into the attack and came back strongly after being hit for 8 off his first two deliveries. St John s only needed 6 to win off 5 balls. Somehow the St John s number eleven gifted us with the opportunity to win but the catch went down. The very next ball looped to our fielder M Davies who took the catch and we won! An incredible end to a days cricket which was clearly dominated by the batsmen. Congratulations must go to G Chirawu and E Bawa who played a crucial role in the win. Mention must also be made of L Precious and M Khumbula who turned the game on the head with tight spin bowling as well as H Patel for his nerves of steel in the final overs. Finally I would like to thank everyone for their unwavering support. I can feel happy leaving knowing that St George s 1st team is in good hands. Thank you. They took advantage of this and banged in 3 baskets in the first half. Our team could not get their hands on the ball and lacked possession. It was then that K Gombedza got the ball and had an amazing lay up to score our first basket. This gave us more confidence and we kicked back into gear (score 2-6). However Gateway also reacted and scored a hat trick of baskets to take the lead further by 12-2. We put all our better players back on and Z Choga managed to score again and we looked like we were back in contention. However it was short lived and the final whistle blew leaving us 4-12 down. Well tried, but we need to take advantage and the initiative earlier next time. We had not played against Lomagundi for many years and did not know the conditions at Lomagundi. Our Captain lost the toss and we were made to bowl. Either way it was good for us, as we looked like the better team from the start. They batted well for the first 3 overs but C Kunyenya got the break through in the 4th over. Wickets kept falling with all our bowlers getting into the act. D Johnson-Brickhill ended up with 3 for 11 and C Kunyenya 2-16 and were the pick of the bowlers. Our tight bowling restricted them to 72 all out in 17 overs! We chased their target down in only 11 overs with 8 wickets to spare thanks to T Kashoni 20* not out and R Geddes 17* not out after C Kunyenya and D Johnson-Brickhill had set up the platform. Overall this was a good all round performance that helped boost all of the players confidence. Let s hope we can carry it forward against our stronger opponents left; St John s and Peterhouse. U15A beat St John's Saints batted first in another game where each team had 2 innings of 20 overs. For the 4th game in a row the opening partnership gave the team a perfect start with Gwese and Garande amassing 125 runs before Gwese was out stumped for 27. Garande batted magnificently to reach his maiden century and finished the 20 overs on 110 not out in the Saint's total of 172 for only 2 wickets! The John's batsmen also batted well, forcing the Saint's bowlers to toil in the morning sun, but they could not match the aggression of Garande and finished their 20 overs on 136 for 1. Myers was the best bowler with 1-13 in his 4 overs. This gave Saint's a 1st innings lead of 36 runs when we batted a second time with the 1st innings batsmen, including Garande, batting at the bottom of the order. This time Lusiyano opened and batted through most of the innings to reach 52 before playing a wild shot and getting bowled. Garande and Gwese added about 20 runs for Saints to finish on 141-8 after 20 overs. John's needed 178 to win and were never really in the hunt. Their opening batsman scored a fairly quick 39 runs but when he was bowled by Chikukwa in the 9th over it was all over bar the shouting! They eventually managed to score 140-5 in their 20 overs. Chikukwa got 2-27 but Myers and Garande were the most economical bowlers both conceding only 19 runs in their 4 overs. Saint's won a great game of cricket by 37 runs.
