Our Homegrown direction has seen us place former junior players in: Bree Mackenzie, Hawai i Pacific University Kyle Adnam, Melbourne United Josh Allison, World Championship Gold Medalist and 2016 Rio Paralympian Over 20 Kilsyth juniors have secured athletic scholarships to play collegiate basketball in the United States. More than 30 Kilsyth juniors played in Australia s top basketball leagues; the NBL and WNBL. Kilsyth s first Paralympian, Josh Allison, formerly represented the Cobras in the junior ranks and the SEABL. Our Homegrown strategy extends beyond on the court and into the workplace. Former players, coaches and officials working within our Association are helping shape the future of Kilsyth Basketball. SOUTH EAST AUSTRALIAN BASKETBALL LEAGUE (SEABL) The South East Australia Basketball League (SEABL) is Australia s premier winter basketball competition. Featuring teams from Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania, the SEABL plays host to some of the top basketball talent from both Australia and overseas, and is the league of choice for NBL and WNBL players during their off-season. The Kilsyth Cobras have established themselves as one of the league s powerhouse clubs in both the Men s and Women s competitions, with the Cobra Men securing finals berths in eight of the past 10 seasons, while the Lady Cobras enter 2017 as the reigning back-to-back South Conference Champions. Kilsyth s Homegrown direction, offers a viable pathway for our Junior Cobras players to progress their basketball into the elite senior level, with the majority of our Men s and Women s SEABL teams featuring Kilsyth Junior players. Kilsyth s home games are played on Hugh McMenamin Court, which is known as one of Australia s best Basketball Association showcourts. Hugh McMenamin Court has a 1,100 seat capacity (1,400 standing room), with attendance numbers at six Cobra home games in 2016 reaching near or full capacity. NATIONAL WHEELCHAIR BASEKTBALL LEAGUE (NWBL/WNWBL) Wheelchair basketball is the fastest growing sport for athletes with a disability and is played in over 80 countries by over 100,000 athletes at all levels around the globe. Now in its 27th season, the National Wheelchair Basketball League has seen some great names go on to play for Australia and other International Leagues and is considered the melting pot for developing and encouraging future Wheelchair Basketball athletes. 2015 saw the introduction of a Men s and a Women s Wheelchair Basketball team, with the Kilsyth Cobras now competing in the National Wheelchair Basketball League (NWBL) and the Women s National Wheelchair Basketball League (WNW- BL). This significant investment by Kilsyth Basketball into inclusive sport builds and expands on the variety of basketball pathways available within the association that lead to athletic excellence. Since joining the NWBL and WNWBL, the Cobras have achieved overwhelming success, with the Men claiming National Championships in 2015 and 2016, while the Women were also crowned Champions in 2015. Kilsyth boast three current Paralympians, with Tristan Knowles, Shawn Russell, and Kilsyth Junior and former SEABL Cobra Josh Allison representing Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics as members of the Australian Rollers. BIG-V VICTORIAN YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP (VYC) The Big-V Victorian Youth Championship (VYC) is Australia s premier Under-23 basketball competition, consisting of the top Under-23 teams from across Victoria. The VYC serves as a pathway for our Junior Cobras players to move into the Cobras SEABL program, with many also securing basketball scholarships to play at the collegiate level in the United States. Kilsyth has long been a powerhouse of the VYC, with our Men s teams boasting two championships - and three grand final appearances overall - during the past four years.
KILSYTH JUNIOR COBRAS The Kilsyth Junior Cobras consist of the top basketball players from Kilsyth Basketball s Junior Domestic Basketball Competition. Our Junior Cobras compete in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) a state-wide Friday night competition. The Junior Cobras program currently has 34 Boys and Girls teams spanning from Under-12 s to Under-20 s with games played within the Metropolitan region and expanding into country areas such as Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Gippsland and the Mornington Peninsula. Under 12-1 Boys - 2016 National Junior Classic Champions The Junior Cobras program is one of Victoria s most successful, as evident by the success of our Homegrown SE- ABL teams. Led by Kilsyth s Manager of Basketball Operations and former NBL and Under-17 Australian Men s Head Coach, Mark Watkins, the Junior Cobras pathway into elite Senior basketball is the envy of rival associations. ABOUT THE LEAGUE HIGHEST LEVEL Junior Competition in Australia OVER 1,200 teams compete weekly across 78 VENUES 12,000 registered players from 54 Associations YEAR ROUND competition, with games played from November to September Cobras teams play an average of 50 GAMES per season, including tournaments Under 18-1 Boys, competing in the 2016 VJBL State Championship Game
