Doing it all Defenseman John Carlson had his first career multiplepoint game Saturday (ga) and nearly had a Gordie Howe hat trick. Carlson interceded when PierreLuc LetourneayLeblond instigated a fight with fellow rookie Marcus Johansson late in the third period but only received a minor for roughing and a game misconduct, not a major for fighting. A Capitals defenseman hasn t had a Gordie Howe hat trick since Kevin Hatcher on Feb. 0, 99.

Carlson is tied for second on the team in scoring (three points) and leads the team with 4 PIM. Starting something Brooks Laich has scored in the first two games of the season for the second year in a row. It s also the second year in a row that he has scored the Capitals first goal of the year. Mano a mano Alex Ovechkin s penalty shot goal Saturday night was the second of his career on his seventh attempt, the most attempts in Capitals history. It was the first penalty shot goal Martin Brodeur in the last five penalty shots he has faced, dating back to Nov. 4, 999 (Fredrik Olausson, Anaheim).
