Barn Burner Trophy Beginning with the 1993-94 season, the Purdue and Indiana women s basketball teams have played an annual game for the Barn Burner Trophy. The traveling trophy, funded by the Sara Lee Corporation as part of its Discover Women s Sports program, is similar in concept to football s Old Oaken Bucket, volleyball s Monon Spike and women s soccer s Golden Boot. The winner of the wood plaque is responsible for bringing it back to its campus and adding a panel to denote its victory, detailing the score and the Most Valuable Player. Purdue won the first Barn Burner game on March 2, 1994, and has won a total of 12 of the 14 Barn Burner Trophy contests. 21. Gearlds, who was named tournament MVP both in Las Vegas and for the WNIT, is averaging a team-high 17.3 ppg this season, good for third in the Big Ten. Gearlds is in sixth place on the Purdue career scoring list with 1,664 points. In 2005-06, the Beech Grove, Ind., native was named Kodak All-District, Honorable Mention All-American and first team All-Big Ten. It s the Law Senior Erin Lawless, a native of Berwyn, Ill., recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds vs. Northwestern. It is the third double-double of her career. She is currently the second leading rebounder for the Boilermakers at 6.0 rebounds per game and has made more free throws than any other player on the team has attempted (83-of-99). Lawless 1,262 points have moved her into 15th place in career points and she is just five points away from passing Kelly Komara for the 14th spot. The 6-foot-2 forward was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team as well as honorable mention All-Big Ten in 2006. Valuable Addition The Boilermakers added senior Brittany Dildine, an outside hitter and defensive specialist on the 16th-ranked Purdue volleyball team whose volleyball career ended Dec. 8 after a loss to Penn State in the NCAA Sweet 16. The 5-foot-9 guard who played basketball and volleyball at Harrison High School in Lafayette, Ind., participated in her first practice with the basketball team on Dec. 14. She has seen action in five games and scored her first point against Northwestern, hitting a free throw. Wisdom-Hylton Shines Junior Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton of Naperville, Ill., is seventh in the NCAA in blocked shots averaging 3.1 per game and has moved into third on the Purdue career blocks list. Wisdom-Hylton had six blocks against Texas, the fifth time this season she s recorded at least five blocks in a game. Against Butler she scored a career-high 24 points on a career best 11-of-12 from the field. She recorded her eighth career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds at Indiana on Jan. 21. Wisdom-Hylton recorded a school-record tying seven blocks against Washington on Nov. 17 which is also a career-high. The team s second-leading scorer at 14.3 points per game she also averages a team-leading 8.4 rebounds as well as 2.0 assists and 2.4 steals per game while shooting a team-high 55.4 percent from the field. The 6-foot-2 forward was a member of the first-ever Big Ten All-Defensive Team, third team All-Big Ten and a member of the U-20 USA Basketball team that won gold this summer in Mexico City. France By Way of Maryland Kalika France, a junior guard who earned a bachelors degree in accounting from Maryland, joined the Boilermakers on Dec. 27 and saw her first game action against Michigan State, scoring two points in three minutes of play. The 5-foot-9 native of Forestville, Md., averaged 11.3 points in two seasons at Maryland and was named to the 2004 ACC All-Freshman Team and honorable mention All-ACC the same year. Knee problems caused France to redshirt the 2005-06 national championship season with the Terrapins. Because she earned her undergraduate degree in three and a half years and only played two seasons, France was eligible for the Boilermakers immediately and has the remainder of this season and next year at Purdue. France is enrolled in the health and kinesiology graduate program at Purdue. Freeman Steps Forward Lakisha Ki-Ki Freeman tied her career-high with 10 points against Northwestern on Jan. 25. The 6-foot-1 guard has the second-best field goal percentage on the team with 53.7 percent. She dished out a career and game-high six assists against Boise State on Dec. 21. She grabbed a career-high seven rebounds at Butler on Dec. 10. Freeman is averaging 4.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. Freeman received a medical redshirt her freshman year after undergoing surgery to repair a hernia. Howell At The Moon Sophomore Jodi Howell is the sixth Indiana Miss Basketball to play at Purdue. The Alexandria, Ind., native averages 7.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. Howell scored a new career-high at Michigan State with 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting, including a career-high 7-of-9 from the three-point line. The seven three-pointers tied a school record for most threes in a game. Howell is shooting 50.4 percent from the field, including 46.2 percent (43-of-93) from the three-point line, which leads the Big Ten conference. Howell s career three-point percentage of 42.8 puts her in first place in the Purdue record books for that category. Campbell s Corner Sophomore Danielle Campbell of Chicago tied her career-high for blocks with four against Northwestern on Jan. 18. That gave her back-to-back games with four blocks. On Jan. 14 against Indiana, Campbell set a career-high for rebounds with 14 boards. It was the first time she had recorded double-digit rebounds. She had a strong performance at Texas with eight points, six rebounds and three blocks. Campbell s career-high of 12 points came against Western Michigan on Dec. 1, 2005 and she tied that mark against N.C. State on Nov. 15, 2006. Campbell is currently averaging 5.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. Mioton Moments Lauren Mioton, a sophomore guard from River Ridge, La., scored her first points of the season at Butler. Mioton tied her career-high with seven points against UT-San Antonio on Dec. 20 and again against Michigan on Dec. 28. This season Mioton has provided steady play for the Boilermakers. Averaging 12.4 minutes a game she has a 1.3:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Catch That Thief! Freshman point guard FahKara Malone is averaging 2.9 steals per game, leading the Big Ten. In the game at Texas, Malone had five steals, the fourth time she s had a game with five or more steals. Malone set a season-high for steals with seven against Hartford on Nov. 12. The seven steals ties a school record for single-game steals by a freshman; she shares the record with four others including Sharon Versyp and Katie Gearlds. Against Boise State, the 5-foot-3 point guard led the team in rebounding with seven, her new career-high. Malone set her career-high for points in the championship game of the WNIT at Baylor on Nov. 17 with 16 points. Against Michigan State she tied her career-high in assists with eight. Malone is climbing up the freshman class record charts as she currently ranks first in steals per game, first in total steals, fourth in average assists at 3.6 per game and seventh in assists with 83. Malone is just three steals from moving past Sharon Versyp on the freshman assists list. Garriga Makes The Transition Laura Garriga, a 6-foot forward from Cambrils, Spain, scored her first collegiate points against Butler on Dec. 10 and finished the game with four points. Beginning in 2002 Garriga attended Les Joaquim Blume Esplugues, a magnet high school in Barcelona, Spain and played for Siglo XXI, a club program managed by the Spanish Federation of Basketball. Her final year there she averaged 14 points and 7 rebounds a game at the guard position. At Purdue Garriga plays in the post. Injury Bug Bites Bogdanova Junior Natasha Bogdanova, a native of St. Petersburg, Russia, underwent ACL surgery on her right knee Aug. 18. A decision on her status this season has not been made. Bogdanova played in every game last season and started five, averaging 3.0 points and 3.0 rebounds. She was a member of the Russian Junior National Team in both 2005 and 2006. The inaugural Big Ten Tournament was played at Hinkle Fieldhouse in 1995 and remained at that location until 1996, when it then relocated to the RCA Dome from 1997-99. The tournament moved to Conseco Fieldhouse in 2000 and then left Indianapolis for a one-year stint in Grand Rapids, Mich., in 2001. The event returned to Indianapolis and Conseco Fieldhouse in 2002 and will remain at that venue through 2012, after the conference announced a five-year extension with the Circle City back in May 2006. The 2006 tournament attendance of 38,638 and session average of 7,728 were both event records in the 12-year history of the tournament. The previous marks of 37,635 and 7,527 were set in 2004. The single-session record of 9,417, which was set in 2004, still stands. The five most recent editions of the women s tournament have posted the highest attendance in the event s history, surpassing the 30,000-patron mark each year. In the past 12 years of Big Ten Tournament play, the conference has welcomed nearly 353,000 fans, including over 325,000 spectators to the Indianapolis area. Six different conference representatives have become tournament champions. Ohio State and Michigan State were first-time winners in 2006 and 2005, respectively, after Purdue claimed both the 2003 and 2004 championships. The Boilermakers have won a conference-best five titles, including three consecutive events from 1998-2000. Iowa and Penn State have each won two titles, while Indiana claimed its only title in 2002, as the Hoosiers capped off a fairy-tale run as the No. 5 seed.
