VOL. 28, No. 8, November 2017 Southview Scene From the Director of Golf by Josh Luehmann It does not look like we will get the extended fall golf season like we have had the past couple years. The final day the golf course will be open is Sunday, November 5th. Even though the golf course is closing we still have a number of exciting events planned for the remainder of the year! Be on the lookout for more information to come on these events. November & December Clubhouse Hours While the golf course is open we will continue with regular business hours. After the course closes for the season, all dining will move upstairs to the Main Bar. We will be open for lunch Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 am 2:00 pm and for dinner Wednesday through Saturday starting at 5:00 pm. On Saturdays the clubhouse will not open until 5:00 pm for dinner service. The clubhouse will be closed for member dining on Sundays and Mondays. Important - Winter Clubhouse Hours During the months of January, February and March the clubhouse will be closed with the exception of banquets and events. During these months we will be closed for all member dining. We will be happy to open for groups or events which meet a $1,000 food and beverage minimum. Remember, Pool & Yacht Club has graciously offered their dining facilities to all our members. For reservations between January 1st and March 31st, you may call Pool & Yacht Club directly at 651-455-3900. When using their Club, please identify yourself as a Southview member and give them your Southview member number and last name for billing purposes. Toys for Tots Southview will once again be a drop off site for the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps and KARE 11. Please help us reach this year s goal by bringing a new and unwrapped toy to the club office when you visit us. We will start taking donations on Friday, December 1st. Golf Shop Party The annual Golf Shop Holiday Party is Friday, December 8th. Be sure to come out and enjoy end of the year savings in the Golf Shop! From the Club President by Gordy Lesch Thank you to those who attended the annual Shareholders Meeting on October 24th. For those who were not able to join us I will share a few highlights from the meeting. 2017 brought lots of change and challenges, but it was also a good year in many ways. Southview continues to be in strong financial shape and we are projecting ending the year at a profit around $169k. The budget was set to make $1, which is supported by our Bank. Year to date we beat the budget 9 out of 10 months due to higher membership, increased banquet revenue, pro shop revenue and expense control. We try to run the course as a business, but we are a non-profit corporation, so we continue to invest in additional capital expenditures if we exceed the budget. Therefore, the Board has already approved an additional $102,000 in capital improvements beyond the $200,000 capital improvements that were in the budget, for a total of $302,000. We will be open for Sunday brunches on December 3rd, 10th and 17th from 10:00 am until 1:00pm. Our brunch on December 10th will be our Family Friendly Brunch with a visit from Santa. We received 242 completed surveys out of 302 sent to our members. I can assure you that the survey responses are read and taken seriously. Although we can t implement every suggestion, your feedback is a very important part of the decision making process
2 for setting policy and approving capital expenditures. Several changes being made for 2018 and the additional capital expenditures were driven by the survey comments. At the meeting we announced the Board nominations were delayed due to the challenge of finding the candidates. We want to represent everyone, and are always looking for candidates, so please let me know if you have an interest in joining the Board or a committee. The ballots were put in the mail on October 24th. The six candidates for the Board are Jim Burton, Uriah Giordana, Ruth Ann Pedersen, Gary Sirek, Pat Sullivan and Al Wagner. A reminder that your ballots must be returned by 5:00 pm on November 15th. Membership Dues At the meeting we announced there will be no changes to membership dues or club charges in 2018. Membership numbers are up and the Board feels good about our financials going forward. Josh and staff are still finalizing the 2018 budgets to be reviewed and approved by the Board at our December meeting. Turkey Please join us for our last Happy Hour of 2017! 3 From the Grounds by Jeramie Gossman With Halloween past us we are now into golf course shutdown mode. As recently communicated the final golfing day of the season will be Sunday, November 5. We will be very busy over the next couple of weeks winterizing the golf course by blowing out the irrigation system, spraying snow mold protectant products and covering the greens. It is amazing how fast the weather turned and seemed like the season came to a screeching halt. October was a great month overall and the nice weather allowed us to complete numerous golf course projects. The projects consisted of stripping and releveling three tee boxes as requested by the Board of Directors, the installation of subsurface drainage in four greens utilizing the company XGD, removing and installing a new cart path on hole 15 as well as many sod repairs throughout the golf course, for example the back of the 17th forward tee and repairing the bunker edge and sod on the right green side bunker on the 7th hole. All of the tee construction work was completed in house and all materials were paid for utilizing the operating budget. Our grounds crew team was able to complete this in a timely manner saving the club thousands of dollars as opposed to hiring an outside contractor. The new teeing grounds should be ready for play by early June next year. I would like to thank our team for a job very well done and for going above and beyond to ensure this was completed this season. I would like to thank all of our staff and membership for a great year and wish everyone a safe and wonderful holiday season. I look forward to seeing all of you next season.
