Left HPYC at 12X12 this afternoon. Due to lack of wind we motored to Meredith Creek off of Whitehall bay just north of the Severn River. Anchored off of Carlton Mitchell's mansion. The entrance is fairly difficult but we have never seen another boat anchored here. Good first day even if you did have to motor keep me posted I enjoy them We were awakened at 4X30 this morning by lots of activity at the mansion. After seeing all the cameras we realized that the mansion and grounds were being used as a film site. The mansion is surrounded on three sides by water. Very cool Seth. Let us know how your screen test goes! Hope you get rained on too much. I checked out your location on Google Earth you can actually see the deep water at the entrance to Meredith Creek by its color Watching the film site delayed our departure by several hours. NOAA's forecast was E 10 with showers. It started at 10 and then 12...14...17...19 when it went over 20 with solid rain we called it quits. Motored through Knapps Narrows and up Harris Creek to Dunn Cove. I hope they got the filming done before the rain came. Marty - We kept hoping they would pan the water in front of the mansion but they never did so we didn't have a screen test to fail.
Rick - The entrance is really narrow and hugs the shore but the scenery is worth it. Today was much like yesterday only the rain held off to 3 pm. NOAA again forecast E 10 but it was E 14 to 19. We had s great beam reach with speeds of 8.5 but then the wind clocked to SE and we got big rollers. JoJo doesn't go to windward well in high waves so we turned up the Patuxant. Sailed to St. Leonard's Creek and anchored in Rollins Cove. Joanne sailing out of Dun Cove. Where are you tucked in today? Next week is warming up so probably a lot of southerlies. We are spending the day at Rollins Cove which is well protected from all directions but west. You are right about the coming southerlies. The weather has made this a difficult cruise. I like a quote from one of Carleton Mitchell's books concerning the weather while cruising: "Ya eats what de cook serves." " That is the challenge and joy of cruising. What about you? I am not sure what the weather is like there. It's rainy and chilly here. I'm trying to get caught up on paperwork today. Tomorrow looks better and next week is supposed to really warm up and get close to 90 on Thurs. Next week looks rain free for us but several days have 20 to 25 knot gusts which make for difficult sailing. We will welcome the heat, at first, to dry us out and warm us up. I get discouraged when I am cold and wet. I can appreciate that. Hopefully you'll have a nice week to warm up! May 14 Left Rollins cove before sunrise. Sale down the Patuxent River and then south to Smith point on the Chesapeake. Winds S 10-15. Correction SW 10-15 Wind increased to SW 18-28. Reefed and then
motored up the Great Wicomico in Virginia. Anchored east of Glebe Point. We explored two other possible anchorages before Glebe Point because the Forecast is for W - NW gusts to 30. Off the Potomac before the heavy winds. This has been a challenging cruise but we are enjoying it. Today was a nice WARM and DRY blue sky day. " Glebe Point on the Big Wicomico. Did not leave the Great Wicomico until after 4 o'clock in the afternoon due to extremely high winds on the bay. Sailed to the Piankatank river below the Rappahannock. Just anchored in the dark. Saw our first pod of dolphins on this trip. They were off the mouth of the Rappahannock River. The are always inquisitive. They swam over and dove underswim under Jojo. Very cool Seth. They definitely are fun to watch. I saw a pod of them just outside Cape May canal recently. Big boys..fun to watch. Yes. I always enjoy watching pelicans and dolphins. We also saw a snake swimming on the water before we left but I don't find that enjoyable. That's neat. I read an article today that a 3000lbs great white just entered the bay. You might need a bigger boat... " Hmmmm. I heard that line on a movie... We have never seen a shark from the boat...just alligators. Oh, only gators... $ Last trip south We encountered a group of 35 gators swimming alongside us. I was hoping they couldn't climb the ladder on the back of the boat Wow, that's crazy. Yeah, something to think about. Send a picture if you see any. Will do. PS. We anchored in Fishing Bay on the Piankatank
Fishing Bay, Piankatank River. We left at sunrise to take advantage of the light W winds. Beautiful! Norfolk Retired battleship at the Norfolk Nautilus center. I am surprised how small WW 2 battleships were compared to modern merchant ships. Dry dock
ICW Gilmerton highway and railroad bridges Passing under Gilmerton bridges Sign to Dismal Swamp Canal on ICW We are anchored outside the lock to the Dismal Swamp Canal. It won't open until 8X30 tomorrow morning. Great pictures! I'm enjoying seeing your trip. Sounds like a great trip and love the pix It is. Thanks. Looks like you'll be in North Carolina in one week's time really good progress despite the conditions Deep Creek Lock to the Dismal Swamp Canal Ha. Ha. The joke is on us. After waiting all night for an opening, we were told that the Canal was closed since last fall. % we had checked on the internet but somehow missed that important fact. &
