NEANGAR PARK PONY CLUB Inc. www.nppc.ponyclubvic.org.au Committee: April Edition 2012 I prefer a bike to a horse. The breaks are much easier to check! Steve Mika March Rally, 2012 Riders: 17 Instructors: Games Sue Hutson, Flat Amy Walsh, Show Jumping Mikayla O Neill; Desire Steward Pony Pals Desire Stewart and Amy Walsh attended our club for the 1 st time to instruct. We welcome them aboard the NPPC rollercoaster of ponies, horses, children, parents and friends. What will the weather bring today? Who would have imagined what a lovely day we would have after the storms and rain we had up to Saturday night? It was great to see so many make the effort to come to Pony Club, when a Sunday Sleep in could have been so easy to do! The Pony Pals had Des all to themselves and with the help of many parents, all learnt lots whilst having fun. It is important that we continue to have helpers up with our pony pals each rally to keep them safe and help them learn with their ponies. You don t have to be a parent of a pony pal to help out and have some fun with them too. Sue has the NPPC riders, working hard on their Games techniques & rules. It is very pleasing to see all riders, whether a dressage rider, show jumper or a beginner, participating in games. It is so important to try new skills and your horse will enjoy a change too. Amy worked with the groups in Flat session. Again it doesn t matter what your preferred discipline is, they ALL go back to the basics of flat work. We look forward to seeing Amy again in May to continue her instruction now that she has met you all. It was fantastic to see our senior member Mikayla O Neill instructing jumping today. After not being able to get her float & horse out, she was volunteered by the DC at very short notice (on the way into PC at 8.00am in fact). Although she was a little nervous to start with, she soon had the riders trotting our grid. The purpose was to improve their balance and build up their riding position strength. No pain, no gain! It is not easy to instruct your peers and I am very proud of Mikayla s effort and willingness to have a go. Her reward was to see many of her students successfully completing at our Combined Training Day, the next week.

DC Report Continued Our theory session with Hannah, Georgia & Nikkita was fantastic. The girls showed everyone how to make their own Ribbon Brow bands in the two blues of course! It was a big job and everyone really enjoyed it, even if mum and dad had to hang around a little bit longer. I think the kids would agree; it was worth it. I expect to see all your new brow bands on at the next rally. We had two members join our NPPC family this rally; Billie Rodda on a NPPC favourite boy George and Rhylan O Toole on Sarah Sparkles. We hope you and your families have a fun time at Neangar Park Pony Club and make some life time friends. DC Report Kim O Neill Maryborough HT Latest Events: On the 25 th of March Toby Lake, Jack Lake, Steve Lake and I (Mikayla O Neill) participated at the state qualifiers for horse trials hosted by Maryborough Pony Club. The day was well organised and everything ran smooth. Steve rode in grade 2 open, Toby and I rode in grade 3 pony club and Jack rode in grade 4 pony club. Toby and I after dressage were sitting midfield, cross country was a challenging course, I went clear but got 4 time faults and Toby got 2 refusals. Showjumping was a tight course, Toby dropped 2 poles and I dropped one. Overall we had a pretty good day and were both happy with the performances of our boys. Jack did a lovely dressage test and was sitting 8 th, he got a clear round in showjumping and went around cross country very bold. He came back very happy with his day and was convinced he was going to get a placing; unfortunately he was eliminated as he missed jump number 14. There are lessons to be learned from every outing. Congratulations to our Neangar Riders and a big thanks to Mum (Kim O Neill) for pencilling grade 3 and I know she got a lot out of it and for the help of packing the showjumping up. Mikayla O Neill?? How did the day go??

Latest Events: AGM Annual General Meeting 26/3/12 Thank you to everyone that attended the AGM /April meeting. Our elected new committee is District Commissioner: Kim O Neill President: Kim Fitzpatrick Vice President: Carmel House Secretary: Sharon Mika Assistant Secretary: Steve Mika Treasurer: Tracey Cole Chief Instructor: Carolyn Peebles Events Secretary: Sandra Grinton & Lisa Horton Newsletter Editor: Steve Mika Canteen Manager: Andrea Rankin Thank you to all the out-going committee members, for your time, patience and endless work behind the scenes. It is great that you will all be still at NPPC to support our new committee. Dahlia & Arts Parade 17/3/12 We had a great time at the parade this year. Well done and thank you to all of our riders, parents and helpers who participated. The wonderful flagless flag bearers - Laura & Jypsy and Mikayla & Junior lead the parade behind the Victoria Police traffic pursuit cars with sirens and lights, and the Eaglehawk brass band behind them. Junior was not leaving Gypsy side as she showed him how it was done! Proudly representing NPPC in the two blues was Will & JJ, Janayah & Cricket, Hannah & Coby, Georgia & Doolan, Sinead & Ginger, Steph & Jonty and Taneika. What an unbelievable effort by all riders and parents, doing a terrific job representing our club amongst bagpipes, balloons, Dragons and trucks full of loud flapping children! Also an honourable mention to our poop collectors, Nathan and Sandra! Thank you Sue for organising another year at the Dahlia & Arts Parade

PCAV Rules of the Month: Bit and Helmet Fitting: The Bit: When a competition requires a compliant snaffle bit, the gear check steward can gently pull the bit to one side in the horse s mouth. This will expose the mouthpiece and central joint(s) for checking If the gear check steward is unable to determine if the bit if correct, they may require the rider to return to gear check at the completion of the test or applicable competition, to remove the bridle and check the bit. Do this in a safe place using a headstall and lead rope. If the bit is not compliant, the competitor must be eliminated. A helmet only protects what it covers. Always wear a helmet low at the front to protect the forehead; it should fit snugly but comfortably. With a correctly adjusted harness, you cannot remove the helmet, or roll it backward or forward, to expose the forehead, obscure vision or hit the nose. If the fit is comfortable and the skin on your forehead moves with the helmet, the fit is correct; if not the helmet is too loose. Ten Ways to get in Shape to Own a Horse! 1. Drop a heavy steel object on your foot. Don't pick it up right away. Shout "Get off stupid! Get off!" 2. Leap out of a moving vehicle and practice "Relaxing into the fall". Roll lithely into a ball, and spring to your feet! 3. Learn to grab your check book out of your purse/pocket and write out a $200. Check without even looking down. 4. Jog long distances carrying a halter and holding out a carrot. Go ahead and tell the neighbours what you're doing. They might as well know now. 5. Affix a pair of reins to a moving freight train and practice pulling it to a halt. And smile as if you are really having fun. 6. Hone your fibbing skills. "See, moving hay bales is fun!" and "I'm glad your lucky performance and multi-million dollar horse won you first place - I'm just thankful that my hard work and actual ability won me second place." 7. Practice dialling your chiropractor s number with both arms paralysed to the shoulder, and one foot anchoring the lead rope of a frisky horse. 8. Borrow the US Army slogan; "Be all that you can be'... (and then add) bitten, thrown, kicked, slimed, trampled." 9. Lie face down in the mud in your most expensive riding clothes and repeat to yourself: "This is a learning experience; this is a learning experience..." 10. Marry Money! Which two of these ponies exactly match? Answer on the last page but no cheating!! (taken from http://l.b5z.net/i/u/10127869/f/activitysheet6.pdf)
