Tipoff between Clemson and Belmont is slated for 2 p.m. with the game airing on ACC Network Extra. The game can also be heard on Clemson Tigers Network (105.5 FM). This will be just the second meeting between the two schools in program history, with the only other contest coming in 2005. The teams met on Nov. 25 in Memphis for the Lady Tiger Thanksgiving Classic. Belmont emerged victorious, 85-62, as Bruins player Jenny Conkle went 7-of-12 from 3-point range. While the Tigers hold a 1-0 record against the Bruins, head coach Amanda Butler has found a win, defeating Belmont 71-50 in 2011 while at Florida. Overall, Clemson holds a 26-29 record against teams from the state of Tennessee. last time out Clemson remained undefeated at home this season after downing Illinois 69-67 in an overtime thriller on Wednesday. It was the Tigers eighth appearance in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge and, with the win, Clemson now sits at 4-4 all-time in Challenge games. The ACC has won the last three ACC/Big 10 Challenges and holds a 89-61 overall record in the Challenge. Tylar Bennett was a rock on defense for the Tigers, hauling in 17 rebounds (4 offensive, 13 defensive), becoming the first Tiger to record 15+ rebounds since Aliyah Collier (17) did so on Feb. 11, 2016. Bennett also notched 11 points to post her first career double-double. Three other Tigers tallied double-digit outings: Kobi Thornton (23), Danielle Edwards (18) and Taylor Hosendove (11). Hosendove s 11-point effort was the first double-digit outing of her career. Wednesday s game was the first time four Tigers posted double-figures since Dec. 8, 2017 against Duke. tiger leaders scouting the bruins An NCAA Tournament team a season ago, Belmont enters Sunday s contest with a 4-2 overall mark, most recently falling 69-78 to Toledo. Junior Ellie Harmeyer posted a career outing for the Bruins, pouring in 26 points on 10-of-21 shooting, but the Rockets pulled away in the final quarter. The Bruins are led in scoring by Darby Maggard, who is averaging 16.7 points per game and is shooting 44 percent from the 3-point arc. Harmeyer follows closely behind with 15.2 points per game, while the rest of the team averages sub-eight numbers. Belmont holds a 3-1 record when on the road with the only loss coming at No. 17 NC State, a 62-77 defeat. The Bruins average 67.3 points per outing with a +7.0 scoring margin over their opponents this season. Its 45.0 mark game puts Clemson 27th in the nation, third in the ACC, in rebounds per game. The 56 rebounds against Illinois were the most by a Clemson team since Nov. 23, 2017 when the Tigers notched 56 boards against Detroit. Junior Kobi Thornton paces the Tigers with 9.1 rebounds per game, good for 69th in the nation and sixth in the ACC. Even more impressive is that 44 percent, (28-of-63) of Thornton s boards were offensive in nature. Of those 28 boards, 12 have resulted in putbacks for the junior for 24 second-chance points. With a pair of double-doubles by Thornton (23 pts, 14 reb) and sophomore Tylar Bennett (11pts, 17 reb), the duo became the first pair to record double-doubles for the Tigers since Feb. 5, 2017, when Thornton and Aliyah Collier tallied double-doubles against North Carolina. clemson in OT Clemson played its first overtime game of the season on Wednesday, downing Illinois 69-67 in extra time. It was the first overtime game for the Tigers since Jan. 18 of this year, when Clemson defeated 65-61 for its only ACC win of the season. All-time, the Tigers have played 46 overtime games in program history, posting a 29-17 mark in games that require extra minutes. When at Littlejohn Coliseum, Clemson holds an 11-7 record in overtime games. In non-conference games, the Tigers are 12-6 in overtime action and 2-0 against foes from the Big 10. Two of Clemson s eight appearances in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge have ended in OT. on the rise With 18 points against Illinois, Danielle Edwards is that much closer to eclipsing 1,000 career points. The senior is just 68 points from joining the 1,000-point club, an honor held by only 23 Clemson Tigers. Edwards will become the first Tiger to become part of the 1,000-point ranks since Nikki Dixon did so in 2015. The senior is also climbing the Clemson record book on the defensive side of the ball, currently sitting in seventh for career steals with 231. If she continues at the rate she is going this season (3.0 spg) she is on pace to take over third place in Clemson history. Edwards has started all 98 games in her career and will most likely be the first four-year starter since Lele Hardy (2006-10). The guard is just two starts shy of moving into sixth in program history for career starts, trailing only Bobbie Mims (121), Lele Hardy (121), Barbara Kennedy (118), Peggy Caple (113) and Amanda White (106). non-conference warriors Clemson posted a 10-3 record in non-conference action a season ago, including a season-long five-game win streak from Nov. 30 to Dec. 17. The Tigers held their non-conference foes to under 60 points in eight of the 13 games, including a season-low 28 points by Kennesaw State. All-time, the Tigers hold a 431-224 record in regular season non-conference action. Clemson is particularly strong in non-conference games at home, posting a 251-61 record when playing in front of the home crowd. The Tigers have squared off with a Big 10 opponent 20 times in Clemson program history, holding a 10-10 all-time mark against their midwestern foes. 3 THE POLLS Associated Press Rk. Hayes, who was originally recruited by Coach Butler, played one season at Florida before coming to Clemson to learn under Butler. Westbrook is the only current Tiger to have ever played for Coach Butler, suiting up at Florida from 2014-16. Three freshmen join the Clemson squad, two forwards in Taylor Hosendove and Skylar Blackstock, and a guard in Camreé Clegg. All three provide depth on the bench for the Tigers. returning stars The Tigers return two of their five starters, including leading point scorer Kobi Thornton and veteran senior Danielle Edwards. Thornton led the team in rebounds (209) and blocks (51), while Edwards created opportunities on the defensive end, averaging 2.6 steals per game. Upperclassmen Aliyah Collier, Keniece Purvis and Chyna Cotton provide depth at the guard position. Collier, who battled an injury last season, has shown an ability to get to basket and make plays. Purvis is an alternative at the point, while Cotton primarily plays at the wings. One of the most improved players from a season ago is Tylar Bennett, who showed vast growth during the summer months. The sophomore totaled 85 rebounds in 29 games a season ago. Along with shooting guard Destiny Thomas, Clemson returns much of its attack from 2017-18. go until you re stopped Coach Butler has introduced a new offensive mentality to the Clemson program, instilling a go until you re stopped drive in the team, whether that be a basket, a foul or a whistle. Butler emphasizes an aggressive style of play on both offense and defense. The up-tempo offense the Tigers will run the season utilizes the entire length of the court and allows the team to capitalize on fast break opportunities. Making plays in transition will be vital to a Clemson offense that would like to set an early tone of quick play. tough slate Clemson is in for a grueling schedule this season as the Tigers faceoff with eight top 25 teams (preseason AP) in 20. The highlights of the slate includes reigning National Champion, Notre Dame, along with five other top-25 ACC teams. The Tigers square-off with 11 tournament teams from a season ago, three in non-conference action and eight following the new year when the team picks up ACC play. record watch Offensive Rk. Butler stepped into her role as head coach on April 12, 2018, ready to make her mark on Clemson. A Successful With an overall head coaching record of 234-162, Butler is no stranger to success, having led her team to 10 postseason berths in 12 years. Four of those 10 postseason appearances came in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Second Round three times and the First Round once. In 12 years at the Division I level, Butler has coached her teams to seven 20-win seasons, including a 24-8 season while with the Gators, tying a program record for wins in a season. 365 Days and 23,273 Miles Later Following her time at Florida, Butler spent the 2017-18 season seeing basketball through a different lens by putting herself in a learning environment every single day. Butler spent time with the Orland Magic s Summer League team, observed the values instilled by Thunder coaches and absorbed information at the Celtics annual clinics. As an analyst, she was afforded the chance to view basketball from yet another angle and provide a voice for the women s basketball community. Time with the Gators Most recently, Butler spent 10 seasons at the head of the Florida Gators women s basketball program, posting a 190-137 record in that span with eight postseason berths. She averaged 19.0 wins per season in her 10 years at Florida and was responsible for six of the program s 15 total 20-win seasons. Under her direction, the 2008-09 squad (24-8) cracked the top-25 in the national polls for the first time since the 2001-02 season. Butler coached the team to a program-best 15-game winning streak and won a program-record seven consecutive games against SEC teams. Butler s mentorship led to 10 All-SEC selections and eight All-SEC Freshman Team honorees during her 10 years at Florida. Following the spectacular 2008-09 season, Sha Brooks received WBCA and AP All-America Honorable Mention status. As a coach, Butler was a United States Marine Corps/WBCA NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year finalist in 2016. Head Coach Debut Butler began her head coaching career at Charlotte, where the 49ers posted a 40-22 record in two seasons. She led the 49ers to two WNIT berths and the team s first-ever share of the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season championship. In her debut season, Butler s team posted a 21-9 mark and a WNIT appearance, earning her Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors. Stops Along the Way After graduating from Florida in 1994, Butler transitioned into an assistant coach role with the team under then-florida coach Carol Ross. In two seasons as an assistant coach, Butler mentored the team to two NCAA Tournament berths, including an Elite Eight appearance. She spent the next four seasons a little closer to home, serving as an assistant coach for Austin Peay State University in Tennessee. While there, Butler took over the recruiting efforts for the Lady Govs, an effort that translated into immense success as one of her recruits, Brooke Armistead, went on to earn OVC Freshman of the Year (2000) and OVC Player of the Year (2003). In May of 2001, Butler took her talents to the state of North Carolina, joining the Charlotte women s basketball staff as an assistant coach. In her second year with the program, the 49ers captured the 2003 Conference-USA regular-season title and earned their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. Butler earned a promotion to associate head coach following the 2002-03 season and continued her success in recruiting, bringing to Charlotte four All-Atlantic 10 selections, four Conference USA All-Freshman team members and one All-Conference USA honoree. The following season, Butler received the nod as head coach of the 49ers. The Early Days A native of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Butler enjoyed a stellar prep career at Mt. Juliet High School, where she tallied over 1,400 points. Butler went on to a standout playing career at the University of Florida. During her junior and senior seasons, she led the Gators to the first two NCAA Tournament appearances in program history. A three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, she was voted a finalist on the CoSIDA Academic All-America District Team. Butler completed her Gator career ranked second on the program s all-time assists list with 401. During her tenure with the Gators, Butler helped the team to 73 victories and 21 SEC wins, in addition to serving as captain during her senior season. Personal Butler earned a bachelor s degree in exercise and sports science from the University of Florida ( 94) and a master s in 1997. 6
