Ted Kluszewski played little baseball in his youth, making a name for himself instead as a hard-hitting football player at Indiana University before showing potential on the diamond and being signed by the Cincinnati Reds. Between 1953 and 1956, no other player in major league baseball hit more home runs than Kluszewski. If not for a back injury, he might have gone down in major league history as one its greatest players. What others say about this ebook: Review 1: This is a good biography of a very good player from the 1950's. While it is good it is not real in depth as to Klu's personal life. The quthor does a good job of going over Klu's career with the Reds,Pirates and Angels. Also his time as batting coach with the Reds is covered very well. There's just not much about his growing up in Illinois. Most of his pre MLB life is devoted to his football playing days at IU. His parents passing at a young age is alluded to but nothing is said how this may have affected Klu's life. Klu was a private person off the field so I will just assume there is just not much known about that aspect of his life. Also the Author tries to give some facts as why Klu should be in the HOF. But it falls short as did Klu career to being a Hall of Fame player. Klu had four outstanding seasons in the 1950's but just didn't have enough great seasons to warrant induction. Injury, as well stated by the author, cut short Klu's career and what may have been a HOF career. This is a good biography of an outstaning Reds player who many have forgotten. I only remember Klu as hitting coach for the Big Red Machine and found his impact as a player was more than I had thought before reading this book. If you are a Reds fan or a fan of good baseball players who have been largely forgotten then you should enjoy this book. Review 2: This was an extremely interesting book on Klu and the Reds from the late 1940's until the late 1980's. It was easy reading and I highly recommend this for any baseball fan Review 3: Finally a good book about one of the best players in the '50's. If not for an injury he would easily made the Hall Of Fame. Instead most baseball fans don't know this talented man. Cook has again captured the the essence of the the golden years of baseball. I hope he keeps writing for a long time. Review 4: One of the best first baseman of the 1950s, Ted Kluszewski is often forgotten when discussing the greats throughout history. He didn't have the longevity to warrant strong Hall of Fame consideration, but for a brief stretch he was one of the most intimidating hitters in baseball. In Big Klu: The Baseball Life of Ted Kluszewski, author William A. Cook takes the reader not only through Kluszewski's reign as a star in Cincinnati, but also the time he spent at Indiana University on the gridiron before signing with the Reds, as well as his years in Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Anaheim. Cook also talks about Ted's post-baseball career in the restaurant business, and the time he spent as a coach for the Big Red Machine under Sparky Anderson, working with superstars Johnny Bench, Pete Rose, and George Foster. Big Klu is a quick read, but it is packed with facts and anecdotes. Long-time fans of Cincinnati baseball will cherish the memories that are brought back while reading the book, and baseball historians will appreciate the references to other stars who were contemporary with Kluszewski, including Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, Duke Snider, and Klu's teammate Gus Bell. Cook wraps up the book with several charts showing football standings and baseball statistics, including how Kluszewski stacked up next to other home run hitters from 1953 to 1956. This book would be a welcome addition to any Cincinnati Reds fan's library. 4 / 6
