How to play
STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW Each point starts with a serve and ends when a player can t hit the ball back, misses the table, hits their own side of the table, or hits the ball into the net. Each game is first to 11 points but if thescore gets to 10-10, you have to win by 2 points (eg 12-10, 13-11, 14-12 etc). Matches are usually best of three or five games and the players change ends after every game. In doubles, you and your team-mate have to play alternate shots.
How to serve With the ball in the palm of your hand, throw it straight up a few inches. As it comes down, hit it so it bounces on YOUR side of the table first, THEN on your opponent s side. Some rules about serving If your serve goes into the net or misses the table, you lose the point. If your serve hits the net before bouncing on the other side, you serve again. This is called a let and there is no limit on the number of lets. You serve for two points, then your opponent serves for two points, and so on. If the score gets to 10-10, you take it in turns with one serve each for the rest of the game.
In singles you don t have to serve diagonally but in doubles you do and always from the right-hand side of the line in the middle of the table. Serving in doubles is best explained by an example. If A and B are playing X and Y, Player A starts by serving to X. Then X serves to B, then B serves to Y, then Y serves to A. Remember two serves each and always from the right-hand side of the table!
