The Billikens are aiming for a second consecutive victory after winning at Tulsa Wednesday. The Tritons, who compete in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference, have won four in a row. Today s contest is an exhibition game for UMSL. BILLIKEN LEADERS Sadie Stipanovich paces the Saint Louis offensive attack (67.2 ppg, fifth in the Atlantic 10) with 11.2 points per game. Stipanovich is followed by Erin Nelson (10.2 ppg), Jackie Kemph (9.7 ppg), Denisha Womack (9.2 ppg) and Jamesia Price (8.3 ppg). Womack is atop the rebounding chart with 5.8 boards per game, Jenny Vliet (5.2 rpg) is second, and Stipanovich and Olivia Jakubicek (4.7 rpg) are battling for third. Kemph averages a team-high 6.5 assists, and Price (1.3 spg) is SLU s leader in steals. Other leaders are Nelson (10 3-pointers), Stipanovich (55.6 percent on 30-of-54 field goal shooting), Price (75 percent on 21-of-28 free throw shooting) and Vliet (2.5 offensive rebounds per game). STIPANOVICH, VLIET POWER BILLIKENS PAST TULSA Sadie Stipanovich scored a career-high and team season-high 20 points, and Saint Louis held off Tulsa 63-58 Dec. 3 in Tulsa. Stipanovich, who was 8-of-13 from the field, also collected seven rebounds to tie her season high. Jenny Vliet added a career-high 16 points for the Billikens, who evened their record at 3-3 with their second road victory of the season. Vliet s 6-of-9 shooting effort included two 3-pointers. Erin Nelson had nine points and tied her career high with seven rebounds. Jackie Kemph registered a gamehigh-tying five assists. The Billikens shot a season-high 50 percent (24-of-48) from the floor, while Tulsa connected on 52.1 percent (25-of-48). The difference was at the foul line, where SLU was 12-of-17 to Tulsa s 4-of-8. HEAD COACH LISA STONE Third-year head coach Lisa Stone owns a 530-277 record in 29 years as a collegiate head coach and a 27-40 mark at Saint Louis. Before arriving at SLU, Stone was 128-119 in eight seasons at Wisconsin, 64-27 in three years at Drake, 277-59 in 12 campaigns at Wisconsin-Eau Claire and 34-32 in three seasons at Cornell (Iowa). She is joined on the sideline by associate head coach Mike Geary (second season) and assistants Glenn Box (third season) and Linda Sayavongchanh (second season). BACKCOURT DOING THE JOB Guards Jackie Kemph and Jamesia Price have lifted SLU to the A-10 lead in assists (18.7 apg, 12th nationally) and assist-turnover ratio (1.14 to 1, 35th nationally). Kemph (6.5 apg, 11th nationally) and Price (3.8 apg) rank first and eighth, respectively, in the league s assists rankings. In assist-turnover ratio, Kemph is second (1.95 to 1) and Price is sixth (1.53 to 1). ON THE MARK Sadie Stipanovich is the Billikens early leader in shooting accuracy. Stipanovich is 30-of-54 from the floor for 55.6 percent, good for fourth in the A-10 and 53rd in the nation. Jackie Kemph (24-of-48, 50 percent) ranks 12th in the league. SLU posted more assists than turnovers in the four games following the opener and now have more helpers (112) than miscues (98). SLU had 20 assists and 17 turnovers vs. SIUE; 21 assists/14 turnovers at SEMO; 16 assists/12 turnovers at Vanderbilt; and 24 assists/11 turnovers vs. Mercer (both season bests).

Saint Louis Game Notes vs. UMSL, 12/6/14 p. 2 BALANCE BEYOND THE ARC The Billikens have spread the wealth in reaching a fourthplace tie in the A-10 in 3-pointers (6.0 pg). Erin Nelson is ninth in the league in treys (1.7 per game, 10 total), and Jenny Vliet is tied for 15th (1.2 pg, seven total). Jackie Kemph, Denisha Womack and Jamesia Price have five 3-pointers apiece. PILING UP THE POINTS The Billikens have topped the 70-point mark three times already this season. Last year, SLU scored 70 or more points in six games. WIND HER UP AND SHE PLAYS Jackie Kemph leads the A-10 in playing time. Kemph averages 37 minutes and has played fewer than 36 minutes only once. VARIETY ON THE GLASS The Billikens have had five different leading rebounders in their first six games this season Denisha Womack (10 vs. Mercer, nine vs. SIUE), Olivia Jakubicek (nine vs. Indiana State), Sadie Stipanovich (seven vs. Southeast Missouri State, seven vs. Tulsa), Jenny Vliet (nine vs. Vanderbilt) and Erin Nelson (seven vs. Tulsa). VLIET AMONG O-REBOUND LEADERS Jenny Vliet is 14th in the Atlantic 10 in offensive rebounds (2.5 orpg). Vliet twice has grabbed four offensive boards. SECOND-HALF SURGES The Billikens were hot in the second half in their three wins, shooting 59 percent (46-of-78) following intermission. SLU was 17-of-25 in the second half vs. Southern Illinois Edwardsville, 15-of- 29 vs. Southeast Missouri State and 14-of-24 vs. Tulsa. FREQUENT FREEBIES FOR PRICE, WOMACK Jamesia Price and Denisha Womack have done the bulk of the work for the Billikens at the foul line. Price (21-of-28) and Womack (14-of-22) have combined for 35 of the team s 55 made free throws (64 percent) and 50 of its 81 attempts (62 percent). BALL APPROACHES MILESTONE Redshirt senior guard Desirae Ball needs 38 points to become the 17th player in Saint Louis women s basketball history to score 1,000 career points. Ball has a chance to move into the top 10 on the Billikens career scoring chart. YOUTH WILL BE SERVED Saint Louis features a youthful team again this season as nine of the Billikens 13 players are sophomores (four) or freshmen (five). This is the fourth time in five years that underclassmen account for at least 62 percent of the SLU roster. NELSON NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL- CONFERENCE TEAM Sophomore forward Erin Nelson was selected to the A-10 preseason All-Conference third team by a vote of the league s head coaches. Nelson, an A-10 All-Rookie choice last year, led Saint Louis in scoring (14.0 ppg) and 3-point field goals (49) in 2013-14. The Billikens were picked to finish ninth in the conference standings. BILLIKENS RETURN EIGHT PLAYERS The Billikens (12-18 overall, 7-9 Atlantic 10 in 2013-14) return eight players, including all five starters, from last year s squad. The returnees accounted for 95 percent of the team s points and 91 percent of its rebounds last year. Sophomore forward Erin Nelson led the SLU scoring attack in her rookie campaign, averaging 14.0 points while adding 4.0 rebounds. Redshirt senior guard Desirae Ball (12.3 ppg) and junior forward Denisha Womack (10.2 ppg) also produced a doubledigit scoring average, and Womack led the Bills with a 7.6 rebounding mark. Redshirt junior guard Jamesia Price (7.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg) is back after collecting team highs of 124 assists (4.1 apg) and 42 steals (1.4 spg) a year ago. Sophomore forward Olivia Jakubicek (6.4 ppg, 5.3 rpg) rounds out the returning starting five. Sophomore center Sadie Stipanovich (7.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg) started the first 17 games last season. Senior guard Erika Cook and sophomore guard Briana Gray also return. FIVE NEWCOMERS ON THE SQUAD Saint Louis welcomes five freshmen to the fold this season. The quintet was ranked by Blue Star Basketball as the No. 45 recruiting class in the nation. Guard Aaliyah Covington was All-State at Edwardsville (Ill.) H.S. last year, averaging a conference-best 18.9 points as well as 8.1 rebounds, 4.1 steals and 2.5 assists. Forward Maddison Gits from Oregon (Wis.) H.S. collected All-State plaudits as a senior with averages of 20.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 1.9 assists. Guard Jackie Kemph out of Rolling Meadows (Ill.) H.S. averaged 20.6 points and 8.2 assists as a senior and was named first-team All-State, Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year and Ms. Basketball of Illinois runner-up. Forward Shea Shipman from Olathe Northwest (Kan.) H.S. averaged 11.6 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds and was All-State honorable mention last year. Guard Jenny Vliet, Kemph s teammate at Rolling Meadows where she grabbed a school-record 986 career rebounds, averaged 14.5 points and 9.3 rebounds and was second-team All- State as a senior. TOUGH SCHEDULE AWAITS SLU s 29-game schedule features 13 opponents that advanced to postseason play a year ago, 10 teams that won 20 or more games and seven squads that finished among the top 100 in the final NCAA RPI. BILLS IN 10TH SEASON IN A-10 Saint Louis is in its 10th year as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. With the addition of Davidson this year, league membership is at 14 institutions. Preseason favorite and defending regularseason champion Dayton, as well as George Washington, received votes in this week s USA Today coaches poll. Dayton was joined by A-10 Championship winner Fordham and Saint Joseph s in last season s NCAA Tournament. The A-10 has been highly visible in postseason play in recent years, sending three teams to the NCAA Tournament and four to the WNIT last season; two teams to the NCAA and five to the WNIT in 2012-13 and 2011-12; and three to the NCAA and five to the WNIT in each of the three campaigns prior to that. The A-10 Championship will be played at Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va., March 4-8. OFFENSE PICKING UP THE PACE Saint Louis produced a 62.1 scoring average last season, an increase of 8.1 points per game from 2012-13. It was the first time since the 2009-10 campaign that the Billikens averaged in the 60s. SLU tallied at least 60 points in 16 games last year after scoring 60 or more just nine times all season in 2012-13. The Bills finished with a flurry, averaging 68.6 points in their final seven regular-season outings. SLU REGISTERS RECORD ROAD STREAK Last season, the Billikens became the first team in Saint Louis women s basketball history to register three successive conference road victories. SLU won at Rhode Island, Saint Joseph s and George Mason in consecutive road contests. EFFICIENCY KEEPS IMPROVING The 2013-14 Billikens had more assists than turnovers in 15 games last year. That equaled the number of times in the previous two seasons combined six in 2011-12, nine in 2012-13. DEFENDING THE HOME COURT The Billikens posted a 9-5 record at Chaifetz Arena last year, their best home mark in 11 seasons.

Head Coach Lisa Stone Lisa Stone, who has a 530-277 record in her 29th year as a collegiate head coach, leads the Saint Louis University women s basketball program for a third season in 2014-15. The Billikens continued to show strong progress in 2013-14, rebounding to win seven of their last 12 games following a tough start. Saint Louis posted a solid 9-5 record at Chaifetz Arena, its best home mark in 11 years, and won three consecutive conference road games for the first time in program history. The Bills increased their scoring average by 8.1 points over the 2012-13 season. Saint Louis 12-19 record in Stone s first campaign belied the team s competitiveness as nine of the Billikens losses, including four in Atlantic 10 Conference play, were by seven or fewer points. Defense was the team s calling card, with SLU allowing an average of fewer than 60 points per game (57.9) for the first time since the 1985-86 season. The Bills held 11 opponents to fewer than 50 points, a school record; six of the 11 were A-10 foes. Saint Louis qualified for the A-10 Championship as the No. 11 seed and upset No. 6 Butler in the first round. In addition, the Billikens won six road games, twice as many as the previous two seasons combined. It was the first time since the 1985-86 season that SLU recorded six road victories. Prior to her arrival at Saint Louis, Stone served eight seasons (2003-11) in charge at Wisconsin. She began her head-coaching career with a three-year stint at Cornell (Iowa) College, spent 12 seasons at Wisconsin-Eau Claire and had a three-year tenure at Drake. We are thrilled to have Lisa and her family join the SLU community, Director of Athletics Chris May said upon Stone s hiring in May 2012. Her successful career, which includes a commitment to academic success and winning at every level, speaks for itself. Lisa s arrival, combined with SLU s educational excellence, state-of-the-art facilities in Chaifetz Arena, the competitive Atlantic 10 Conference and a fertile recruiting base, makes SLU women s basketball poised for success. I am excited to be a part of the Billiken family, Stone said. SLU has an outstanding commitment to excellence, and I am thrilled to be part of an institution that strongly encourages its student-athletes to lead, learn and serve. The University offers academic prestige, outstanding facilities and a beautiful campus, plus an opportunity to compete in the very strong Atlantic 10 Conference. Stone guided Wisconsin to five postseason appearances, two 20-win campaigns and a 128-119 record that included a 95-68 mark in her final five seasons. In her fourth season (2006-07), the Badgers won a school-record 23 games (23-13) and were WNIT runners-up. Following WNIT appearances the next two seasons, Wisconsin s 2009-10 squad posted a 21-11 record, tied for third in the Big Ten Conference and earned an NCAA Tournament bid. Stone was rewarded by being named Big Ten Coach of the Year. The Badgers again tied for third in the Big Ten in 2010-11 and participated in the WNIT. Wisconsin also excelled academically with Stone at the helm. Twenty-one players combined to earn 42 Academic All-Big Ten nods during her tenure. Stone s 64-27 record at Drake included a 42-12 Missouri Valley Conference ledger. She led the Bulldogs to a 23-7 record, an MVC regular-season co-championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in her first season (2000-01). Stone, whose 23 victories were the most by a first-year MVC women s basketball coach, was tabbed the league s Coach of the Year. The following season, Stone s team went 25-8, achieved a No. 20 national ranking and reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. The Drake program also flourished in the classroom under Stone s leadership. The 2000-01 Bulldogs were ranked sixth on the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s Academic LISA STONE YEAR BY YEAR Year School Record Postseason 1985-86 Cornell (Iowa) 11-11 1986-87 Cornell (Iowa) 12-10 1987-88 Cornell (Iowa) 11-11 1988-89 UW-Eau Claire 24-4 NCAA (Q-finals) 1989-90 UW-Eau Claire 21-6 NCAA 1990-91 UW-Eau Claire 15-10 1991-92 UW-Eau Claire 23-5 NCAA (Q-finals) 1992-93 UW-Eau Claire 22-4 NCAA (rd. of 16) 1993-94 UW-Eau Claire 23-6 NCAA (3rd place) 1994-95 UW-Eau Claire 24-5 NCAA (Q-finals) 1995-96 UW-Eau Claire 25-4 NCAA (Q-finals) 1996-97 UW-Eau Claire 27-4 NCAA (2nd place) 1997-98 UW-Eau Claire 22-5 NCAA 1998-99 UW-Eau Claire 23-5 NCAA 1999-00 UW-Eau Claire 28-1 NCAA (rd. of 16) 2000-01 Drake 23-7 NCAA 2001-02 Drake 25-8 NCAA (rd. of 16) 2002-03 Drake 16-12 2003-04 Wisconsin 10-17 2004-05 Wisconsin 12-16 2005-06 Wisconsin 11-18 2006-07 Wisconsin 23-13 WNIT (2nd place) 2007-08 Wisconsin 16-14 WNIT (2nd rd.) 2008-09 Wisconsin 19-15 WNIT (rd. of 16) 2009-10 Wisconsin 21-11 NCAA 2010-11 Wisconsin 16-15 WNIT (2nd rd.) 2012-13 Saint Louis 12-19 2013-14 Saint Louis 12-18 2014-15 Saint Louis 3-3 Totals 29 seasons 530-277 Top 25 Honor Roll, and the 2001-02 team garnered a No. 15 ranking on the prestigious list. At NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Stone turned around a program that had registered just one winning record prior to her arrival. Her teams tallied a 277-59 mark (159-33 in conference play), turned in 11 20-win seasons, reached the NCAA Tournament 11 times and captured six league crowns. Stone s 1996-97 squad was the national runner-up, and her 1993-94 team finished third in the nation. She was chosen the 1997 WBCA Division III National Coach of the Year, and in 2000 she was named D3 News/Molten Division III National Coach of the Year as the Blugolds posted a 28-1 record. A five-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Stone was inducted into the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Hall of Fame in 2006. Stone s accomplishments at UW-Eau Claire led to her selection to the inaugural class of the WIAC Hall of Fame earlier this year. Additionally, she was named the WIAC Women s Basketball All-Time Co-Coach. When Stone was named head coach at Division III Cornell College at age 22 in 1985, she was the nation s youngest head basketball coach at a four-year institution. She collected a 34-32 record at Cornell and led the Rams to the Midwest Conference s Southern Division title in each of her three years. Stone also served as the Rams head softball coach. In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, Stone was a head coach in the 2001 WBCA All-Star Game as well as an assistant coach for gold-medal-winning Team USA at the 2002 World Championships for Young Women Qualifying Tournament in Brazil. Stone holds a bachelor s degree in physical education (1984) and a master s degree in athletic administration (1986), both from the University of Iowa. A four-year standout at point guard under legendary head coach C. Vivian Stringer, she is 26th in points (1,129), tied for ninth in steals (177) and 12th in assists (322) on the Iowa career charts. Stone also owns a share of the Hawkeyes record for steals in a game (nine). An Oregon, Wis., native, Stone was a threetime team captain and a two-time Hawkeye Most Valuable Player. As a senior, she won the Big Ten Medal of Honor as one of the conference s top scholar-athletes and captured the Iowa Student-Athlete of the Year award. Stone earned four letters each in basketball, tennis and track and field during her high school career. She helped lead Oregon to the Wisconsin Class A state basketball tournament in 1979 and 1980, and she earned first-team All-State honors as a senior and second-team recognition as a junior. Stone and her husband, Ed, a certified public accountant, are the parents of a daughter, Allison, and a son, Tyler. Allie will graduate in May 2015 from Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where she was an All-Conference soccer player. Tyler is a sophomore at SLU and serves the Billikens as a team manager.

Mike Geary Mike Geary, who owns 417 wins as a collegiate women s basketball head coach, is in his second season as a member of the Saint Louis University staff. Geary, who arrived at Saint Louis in June 2013 following four seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Detroit Mercy, was promoted to associate head coach in June 2014. It is my pleasure to promote Mike Geary to associate head coach, head coach Lisa Stone said. He has done a remarkable job with our program. His experience as a successful head coach has been a great asset in building a championship program. Mike is highly accomplished at X s and O s, game strategy and practice preparation, Stone said. He is organized, detailed and very knowledgeable. Mike is a great teacher as well and has been exceptional at player development. Our players have improved under Mike s guidance, Stone said. They believe in him, and I am honored to have him on the sideline next to me. I am excited to join the Saint Louis University women s basketball program, Geary said at the time of his hiring. During my visits to St. Louis, I was impressed with the SLU campus and everyone I met. Lisa Stone is a tremendous coach and a proven winner, and I look forward to joining her to build a program we believe will be special. Geary helped Detroit Mercy post a 21-13 record and win the Women s Basketball Invitational in 2012-13. That followed a 2011-12 campaign that saw the Titans go 20-14 and earn a WNIT bid. During Geary s tenure, Detroit Mercy improved its NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) from 220 to 97. Geary spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Ball State University. He helped guide the 2006-07 Cardinals to a 24-7 ledger, the Mid-American Conference West Division title and a WNIT berth. Geary enjoyed considerable success as a head coach at the NCAA Division II level. He led Lake Superior State to the 1988 NCAA Tournament round of 16 in his second season, and the Lakers were 47-10 in his two campaigns at the helm. Geary then embarked on a stellar 17-year stint at Northern Michigan, where his teams compiled a 370-123 record and enjoyed 12 seasons, including eight in succession, with 20 or more victories. Geary took over a Northern Michigan program that was 9-18 the year before and produced a 24-4 slate in 1988-89. The Wildcats became the first NMU women s basketball team to play in the NCAA Tournament, the first of 11 national tournament appearances under Geary s direction. He was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Coach of the Year. Northern Michigan reached the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight (national quarterfinals) in 1996 and advanced to the national semifinals in 1998. The 1997-98 team won a school-record 28 games (28-4) and reached No. 3 in the national rankings. The 1996-97 Wildcats were undefeated in conference play and turned in the best winning percentage (.900, 27-3) in program history, accomplishments that led to Geary s selection as Coach of the Year by the GLIAC and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. Geary s Northern Michigan teams captured seven GLIAC Tournament crowns, including four consecutive from 1995 to 1998, and played in seven NCAA regional championship games. His players earned five All- America awards and six GLIAC Most Valuable Player honors. Geary is a 1979 graduate of Aquinas College (Grand Rapids, Mich.) with a bachelor s degree in physical education. He married the former Emily Samuelson, who serves as the Billikens director of operations/ video coordinator, in 2012; the couple has a son, Cruz, who was born in May 2014. Geary also is the father of sons Sean and Tyler. Assistant Coaches Glenn Box Assistant coach Glenn Box returned to Saint Louis University in June 2014 to begin a second stint on the Billiken women s basketball staff. Box, who served the 2010-11 and 2011-12 campaigns at SLU, spent the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons as an assistant at the University of Akron. I am very excited to have Glenn Box back at Saint Louis University, head coach Lisa Stone said. During the six years I have known Glenn, I have admired his passion and love for the game. He brings head-coaching experience, experience on the men s side and experience coaching Division I women s basketball to our program. Glenn has great knowledge of the game and is a great teacher. His personality and enthusiasm are infectious and will have an important impact on our players and our recruiting. Glenn has many ties to the Midwest and to coaches in the surrounding area, which will aid us in our recruiting, Stone said. He will be responsible for our perimeter players development, game and practice planning, scouting and all aspects of recruiting. We re happy to welcome Glenn back to the Billiken family. The opportunity to assist Coach Stone is one which I consider to be special, Box said. I am excited to assist her in any capacity as she continues to lead this program in a positive, winning direction. At Akron, Box worked primarily with the Zips post players and served as the team s defensive coordinator. He also oversaw juniorcollege recruiting and scheduling and was the liaison for strength and conditioning. In 2013, Box coached Akron s first-ever Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, Rachel Tecca, as well as third-team All-MAC selection Sina King. Before first arriving at Saint Louis in May 2010, Box served a twoyear stint as an assistant coach at Western Michigan, where he worked primarily with the Broncos guards. He spent six seasons at Rend Lake College in Ina, Ill., serving the first three years as an assistant with the men s program before taking over as head coach of the women s team. Box, a native of Cairo, Ill., began his coaching career in the Cairo school district. The Rend Lake women posted a 64-31 record (.674) and defeated four nationally ranked opponents during Box s three-year tenure. His 2007-08 team assembled a 21-11 ledger and reached No. 16 in the NJCAA national poll. The 2006-07 Lady Warriors fashioned a 24-8 mark, second best in school history, while finishing among the top 25 in the nation in scoring, field-goal percentage, 3-point field-goal percentage and freethrow percentage. Box s 2005-06 squad went 19-12. Box coached Rend Lake players who garnered six All-Conference accolades and four All-Region plaudits. That group included Rebecca Harris, a 2006 honorable mention All-American. Box earned an associate s degree in elementary education at Rend Lake in 1996 and a bachelor s degree in criminal justice at Southeast Missouri State in 1998. He and wife Angela are the parents of two sons, Darius and William, and a daughter, Auna.

Assistant Coaches Linda Sayavongchanh Assistant coach Linda Sayavongchanh is in her second season at Saint Louis University after joining the Billiken staff in June 2013. Sayavongchanh, who arrived at Saint Louis following one season as assistant coach/corecruiting coordinator at the University of North Dakota, is responsible for developing the Billikens perimeter players, scouting and game preparation, recruiting, academic coordination and summer camps. It is a pleasure to have Linda Sayavongchanh as a part of my staff and our Billiken family, head coach Lisa Stone said. I have known Linda for many years as a player, coach and recruiter. I recruited and coached her while serving as head coach at Drake University. She was one of the finest point guards in the Missouri Valley Conference and was instrumental in our success. Linda is regarded as a rising star in the profession, Stone said. She has great Midwest recruiting connections that will help us continue to build a successful program. Linda has energy, drive and a strong work ethic, Stone said. She shares my vision of team unity, defense and fundamentals, and she is excited to contribute to the building of a championship program at SLU. I feel very blessed to have an opportunity to work with Lisa Stone and be a part of the Billiken family, Sayavongchanh said. Lisa is a highly respected coach who has been in the business for a long time. I believe she can take the SLU women s basketball program to new heights. Prior to her stint at North Dakota, Sayavongchanh served three years as an assistant coach at Drake. In her final season, the 2011-12 campaign, the Bulldogs were runners-up in the MVC Tournament and earned a WNIT bid. Sayavongchanh spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Minnesota Duluth and one year as a student assistant coach at Drake. She has been Drake s summer basketball camp co-director since 2009 and also has assisted at the Minnesota Duluth camp. Sayavongchanh was a four-year letter winner and two-year team captain at Drake. She was All-Conference honorable mention and an MVC All-Defensive selection in each of her four seasons, and she was named to the 2004 MVC All-Tournament team. Sayavongchanh helped lead the Bulldogs to WNIT appearances in 2004 and 2006. A standout at Lincoln High School in Des Moines, Iowa, Sayavongchanh is a member of the school s Hall of Fame as well as the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Hall of Fame. Sayavongchanh holds a bachelor s degree in elementary education, with endorsements in mathematics and coaching, from Drake (2007). She earned a master s degree in education at Minnesota Duluth in 2009. What s a Billiken? The Billiken was born Oct. 8, 1908, when Kansas City art teacher and illustrator Florence Pretz patented a design for an elflike creature with pixie ears, a mischievous smile and a tuft of hair on his pointed head. Reportedly, the image came to her in a dream. Although it didn t appear on the actual patent, some believe Pretz found the Billiken name in a fanciful work entitled, Mr. Moon: A Song of the Little People, by Canadian poets Bliss Carman and Richard Hovey. Within a short time, Pretz sold her patented image to the Billiken Company of Chicago. Initially manufactured as a bank and statuette, and later as a doll, this good luck charm soon became a national craze. By 1911, the Billiken s likeness adorned everything from marshmallow candies to hood ornaments. In his heyday, the Billiken enjoyed worldwide fame. Artisans in Alaska began carving his image into ivory, and in Japan, he appeared in shrines, amusement parks and even a movie. Like many other fads, the Billiken might have faded into obscurity if it were not for Saint Louis University law student John Bender, who also happened to be the coach of SLU s football team during the height of Billikenmania. One story claims that nearby drugstore owner Billy Gunn called Bender a Billiken when the coach walked into his establishment one day. Supposedly, legendary sportswriter William O Connor was within earshot of the remark and took up the moniker not only for Bender but also for SLU s sports teams. Another tale claims O Connor himself dubbed the coach a Billiken after a particularly good practice left Bender beaming with a big smile. After practice, Bender s fellow law student Charles Z. McNamara, a local cartoonist, sketched Bender as a Billiken, posted it in Gunn s drugstore window and tabbed the football team Bender s Billikens. Yet another yarn reports that the druggist asked McNamara to decorate his store window the night before a homecoming game. Supposedly, McNamara drew a Billiken, a popular good luck charm, causing one of his fellow students to exclaim, That looks like coach Bender! Whatever the case, O Connor is generally credited for popularizing the name throughout the city, but one fact flies in the face of this legend and lore. O Connor did not join the St. Louis Post-Dispatch until Nov. 26, 1911, one full month after the newspaper first mentioned Bender s Billikens. Regardless of how the story is told or whether his mysterious origins are ever finally resolved, the Billiken remains a good luck charm for Saint Louis University s sports teams and always brings smiles to the faces of SLU fans. Legend has it that the Billiken has three kinds of luck good, better and best. Buying a Billiken gives the buyer good luck. To have one given to you is better luck. The best luck comes if the Billiken is stolen.
