3 Float through the I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream We had a great time with the 4th of July Ice Cream Social!! of lazy days summer! The first root beer float was created Aug. 19, 1893. Keeping It Cold Remember When: Iceboxes Keeping food and drinks cool was a chore before electric refrigerators and freezers became common household appliances. At the turn of the 20th century, nearly every home s kitchen or pantry had an icebox a wooden cabinet that was lined with zinc or tin and kept cool by a large block of ice. As the ice melted, it drained into a drip pan that had to be emptied often. Some iceboxes included an exterior access door so the iceman could deliver ice without having to come into the house. Yum!!!!! Modern Days Nowadays we have refrigerators that you can see what s in them by looking at your cell phone.

7 Aug. 3 Is National Watermelon Day By Emily Beard This month I am writing about the health benefits of eating watermelon because Aug. 3 is National Watermelon Day! As many of you know, keeping your body properly hydrated is important for your everyday health. An easy way to do this is by drinking water; however, eating foods that have high water content can also help! Interestingly, watermelon is 92 percent water! High water content is one of the reasons that fruits and vegetables help you feel full and is also why you are able to eat large amounts without a lot of calories. As far as fruits go, watermelon is one of the lowest in calories only 46 calories per cup! There are five common types of watermelon: seeded, seedless, mini (thumb size), yellow and orange. Health Benefits of Watermelon: Protects against kidney damage Reduces wrinkles and age spots on the skin Lowers body temperature and prevents heat stroke Lowers blood pressure Prevents cancer Improves heart function Protects eyes and prevents macular degeneration Lycopene is the powerful carotenoid antioxidant that gives watermelon its pinkish/reddish color as well as all of its health benefits. High blood levels of lycopene have been proven to prevent against a stroke! Keep in mind: Health professionals say that you must Eat melon alone or leave it alone because it will make your stomach groan. The trick is to have no food 30 minutes before or after eating melon. Most people throw away the watermelon rind, but next time, try putting it in a blender with some lime for a healthy, refreshing treat! While many people prefer seedless varieties of watermelon, the black seeds are edible and actually quite healthy. They contain iron, zinc, protein and fiber! So the next time you find yourself wanting to buy seedless watermelon, try a seeded variety instead! You will gain even more health benefits! YUMMY Root Beer Floats At the end of the 19th century, a man named Frank Wisner invented the first root beer float. This early version was also known as a black cow. To make one of these delicious beverages, just add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to a tall glass of root beer. The first Root Beer Float was created August 19, 1893. Join us in the dining room August 18th at 2:30 to celebrate the Root Beer Floats Birthday. Wake Up and Drink Up After a night of sleep, rehydrate your body by drinking a glass of water when you first wake up. The replenishment can provide a natural pick-me-up as you start the day.
