Term 4 Issue No. 6 11 th December 2014 From the Sports Coordinators Welcome to our final CEA newsletter for 2014. We have seen some outstanding team and individual performances throughout the year. Term 4 has continued this trend with our Cricket teams excelling in their Saturday morning competition, our Drive Tennis finishing fifth in the A1 competition and our Girls Tennis finishing on a high. We send our best wishes with our First X1 Cricket team as they head to Warragul Victoria for the annual Marist Cricket Carnival next week. Congratulations to John Cadd, Ali Vessali and our amazing boys Basketball team on their success at the recent Australian All Schools Basketball Championships held in Canberra. After finishing fourth in the minor rounds they were successful in progressing to the grand final after winning against an undefeated Sydney side. After a double time on, the SHC boys were defeated by one point finishing a praise worthy second in the Championships. The College community are extremely proud of the team s achievements and representation of the College and South Australia. We look forward to another successful year of sport at the College in 2015. Australian Schools Basketball Championships The Hearts basketball team has had its most successful season on record this year. After completing an undefeated regular season including wins over Rostrevor and Assumption, the team went on to win the State-wide Knockout and qualify for the Australian Schools Championship in Canberra. This is an annual invitational tournament with representatives from each state and, this year, a National Youth Team from China. In a difficult first day Sacred Heart went down to St James 89-91 and St Augustine s in double overtime 100-108. Despite the results the team played quite well with Sam and Isaac White scoring both in both games. On Day 2 the whole team lifted against an under-manned St Francis Xavier winning a rout 111-61. Isaac White s 39 points earned him Player of the Day honours but he was ably assisted by Elijah Minear-Kulpinski s 18 points and Tom Hayman s 14. Day 3 began with a danger game against Lake Ginninderra. However Sacred Heart was sufficiently in control to give everyone equal playing time and to rest key players. Score 87-71. Later in the day the qualifying final was a very tight game but Haileybury had no answer for a dominant 36 points and 25 rebounds from Akol Deng and Sacred Heart prevailed 93-91 setting up a semi-final against tournament favourites Sydney High. Sacred Heart played catch-up for the first three quarters with Erik Tume and Harry Sires playing valuable minutes as key players accumulated fouls against bigger opponents. However as the game wore on Sydney s larger players, frustrated by dogged defence from Lachie Thomas and the constant quick hands of Dave Angley, began to tire and a final quarter 22-7 burst saw Sacred Heart into their first National grand final. The final game, played against St Augustine s again, was an epic battle. By three quarter time St Augustine s had pushed out to a 12 point lead which they extended to 15 early in the fourth before Sacred Heart staged a stirring comeback to level the scores with an outrageous Isaac White 3 pointer on the bell to force overtime. The lead seesawed but the scores were still locked together at the end of overtime. In the second overtime St Augustine s made a tough layup in the last second to snatch victory by one point 102 101. It was a heartbreaking result but everyone contributed in the final at various times and the team did Sacred Heart proud. Akol Deng who played all 50 minutes and had 23 points and 25 rebounds was outstanding as were Isaac White (34 points 2 steals) and Sam White (26 points 8 assists). 1 st XI Cricket The 2014/15 cricket season has started well for the First XI side with a few confidence boosting wins ahead of our departure to Warragul for the 42nd Annual Marist Cricket Carnival. Our first game of the season was an action packed T20 against Westminster with the final scores tied and a bowl off having to be enforced...unfortunately Westminster got the better of us in sudden death. Daniel Moroney was the stand out with the bat scoring 45 runs off 47 deliveries. Our next assignment was a 2-dayer against PAC and the boys fought hard in this contest, going down narrowly by 2 wickets in a fantastic battle. After a top order collapse, Pat Kitschke and Ben James steadied the ship with innings of 48 and 35 not out respectively, boosting our total to a competitive 171. Tom Hynes and Pat Kitschke did the most damage with the ball, taking 3 wickets each. Our next two matches were T20 s, where we were able to get the better of Scotch and Pultney. Against Scotch, our Captain Adam Jackson starred with the bat scoring 78, while our spinners did the damage with the ball...rory O Driscoll and Tim Reynolds both claiming 3 wickets. Pultney was a similar result with Jayson Bartolo top scoring with 48 and Ben James the best of the bowlers with 3 wickets. Next we faced Pembroke in a 2-dayer at home and the boys relished the opportunity to bat on our home deck. We managed to amass a total of 8/349, which is the best score we have managed for a number of seasons. Adam Jackson again was the hero with the bat, scoring his maiden First XI ton. He finished on 127, with Lachlan Woolford (66), Ben James (45), and Liam Mackie (41) also doing the damage. In reply, Pembroke were all out for 193, with Charlie Williams the pick of the bowlers taking 4/35. Next we faced Mercedes in our final T20 of the Messenger Bowl competition. This was a good day for the Hearts, bowling Mercedes out for 47...Lachlan Woolford with career best figures of 6/11. We were able to chase down the total in the 5th over thanks to some big hitting from Jackson Greatrex and Jayson Bartolo. Unfortunately our next two Saturday fixtures against St Michaels and Westminster were rained out, but we did manage to sneak in our annual T20 against SHOCS during the week. This has become a fantastic tradition as we play for the Br Jordan Redden Cup, who we know has provided so much for cricket at the College. Br Jordan spoke to the both sides before the match about the traditions of cricket and also presented the cup to winning skipper Adam Jackson at the conclusion of the match. In another good result for the side, we were able to keep SHOCS to 3/107 after their 20 overs and we passed the score in the final over thanks to another fantastic knock from Adam Jackson who led from the front once again with 33. 3 P a g e

Our final game of the term was against Westminster. Due to rain, this 2-day fixture became a 1-dayer (50 overs per side). After our skipper lost his 4th toss in a row, Westminster decided to bat first and despite getting off to a solid start, we were able to dismiss them for a competitive total of 177 in very trying conditions. Rory O Driscoll was pick of the bowlers with 4/39. With the bat, once again skipper Adam Jackson was the stand out scoring 49 to lead the side to victory with 9 overs to spare in what was a fantastic team performance. Jayson Bartolo and Ben James were also good with the bat, getting us off to a great start in our run chase with a 64 run opening partnership. We now look forward to heading over to Warragul on December 9, to take on the other Marist schools from around Australia and hopefully we will be able to continue our winning ways. Drive Tennis This year we easily maintained our position in the A1 division of the Drive Tennis competition. Our team competed against the following schools: Marryatville High School Prince Alfred College St Peter s College Pembroke School Immanuel College St Michael s College Blackfriar s Priory School Christian Brothers College Concordia College We came fifth overall which is the strongest result for many seasons. All members of the team showed great commitment, skill and determination and should be rightfully proud of their contributions during the season (which stretched across Terms 1 and 4). Marryatville High School, Prince Alfred College and St Peter s College were the strongest teams and easily defeated the lower ranked teams. We were narrowly defeated by Pembroke School (5-4) in term 1 which placed us in fifth spot. We defeated all other teams and finished with 8 wins and 4 losses. Matthew has had the formidable task of playing in the number 1 spot all season. His game improved as the season progressed and his recent focus on his serve/volley game will ensure that he is a force to be reckoned with next year. Nicole Kraemer (year 10) has been an outstanding player and proved her worth in every match she played remaining undefeated even in number 2 spot. Nicole was unavailable in term 4 as she was competing in tournaments on the Asian circuit. Jack Conley (year 10) found the competition tough in the number 3 spot and will no doubt become a strong contender next season. Even so, he achieved some good wins, his demeanour and skills were solid and his game was a pleasure to watch. Steve Dawson (year 11) had an excellent year at number 4 and played many memorable matches with great character and finesse. His record of 9 wins and 2 losses rates him as our most valuable player this season. David Fry (year 10) was promoted to number 2 for term 4 after some easy wins in term 1. His all-round strength was intimidating to his opponents and he has a bright future ahead of him. 6 P a g e

Connor Burley (year 11) had a shortened season due to a back injury in term 1. His enthusiasm and input into the team were very much appreciated especially in term 4 when he returned to good form. Declan Grant (year 10) and Cooper McRae (year 10) have been strong and enthusiastic team members who played in various spots in the bottom half of the team. The team has relied heavily on these boys and they have consistently won their matches often resulting in an overall win for the team. Akash Jacob (year 10), Sarah Fosdike (year 10) and Sam Walker (year 11) have been generous reserves who provided valuable wins for the team. They can genuinely count themselves as worthy members of the Drive squad! Once again, the Drive Tennis team will remain in A1 division in 2015 and I am confident that we have a strong and capable group of tennis players to keep us in the top level competition for many years to come. Finally, a big thank-you to the parents who have provided tireless support for their children and who have joined me every week in cheering the team on. Mrs Gail Morgan Drive Tennis Coordinator Boys Badminton Even though we had a short Term 4 competition, we still had an enthusiastic and successful team effort. Special mention must be made of the keen involvement of our two Yr12 players, Josh Doley and Isaac Nicholls, who continued to play for us during their exam time. Other notable efforts came from Shannon Gaffney and Tessa Doley who attended every training session held across Terms one and four. The continued improvement in four players in particular, Alexander Benn, Joseph Brunatro, Clem Goodrich and Declan Luke, was another pleasing aspect of our season. Girls Tennis The focus of Term 4 turned to exams and study for a number of our female athletes, however there was a group of boarders who were keen to fit in their weekly sport commitments. With seven of them committed, they combined with our day students to fill two sides in the Term 4 Catholic Girls competition. Both teams were entered into the B grade competition and had pleasing results under the guidance of Bernadette Thorpe and Lindy Leahy. Our SHC1 side was only defeated by one opponent and finished a pleasing 2 nd overall. The SHC2 side lost only two matches to finish 4 th in the 10 team competition. Amongst the talent and dedication there was also plenty of fun and enjoyment to be had. The girls adopted a fluro theme for the round where they played each other and took every opportunity to enjoy their sport. A huge thank you to Lindy and Bernadette for coaching the girls and also to the girls. Thank you also to the fill-ins who assisted when injury or absence struck. 8 P a g e

Congratulations Outstanding Sporting Achievements Congratulations to graduating student Cory GREGSON (Year 12) and old scholar Alex NEAL-BULLEN (2013) on being selected in the AFL National Draft. Alex was taken at pick 40 by Melbourne and Cory was taken at pick 47. Cory will join fellow SHOCs Jarrod Rivers and Andrew Mackie at the Cats! Congratulations to graduating student Keenan RAMSEY (Year 12) on his selection by Adelaide Crows for the 2014 Rookie draft. Keenan, a boarder from Port Lincoln, was taken at pick 27. Congratulations to Micaela HABIB (Year 11) who competed in the State Age and Open Swimming Championship recently. Micaela won 11 medals in total, 7 were gold. Two gold medals were for open finals in 200 backstroke and 400 individual medley, which makes her the fastest in the State in these two events. Micaela s 4 x 50 m freestyle relay team broke the state record. Congratulations to Niamh HENRY (Year 12) who received a bronze medal in the U18 High Jump at the All School Competition in October. As a result Niamh has been selected in the SA All Schools State Team, which will compete at the Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships this month. Congratulations to Luana KIDNEY (Year 10) who can 2 nd in Shot-put, 3 rd in Discus and 5 th in Hurdles at the All School Competition in October.
