His master was very cruel and treated him badly. One day he ran away from his master s house. As he was passing through a forest, he heard the cries of a lion. He took courage and went near the lion. The lion put forth one of his legs. Androcles found a thorn in the lion s paw. The lion was feeling pain because of this thorn. Androcles took out the thorn. After this, the two of them became friends. A few months passed. One day, the King s soldiers caught Androcles and brought him to the Magistrate. Greek laws were very harsh. The Magistrate said that Androcles should be thrown before a hungry lion so that the lion might tear him into pieces. According to the punishment, the soldiers threw Androcles before a lion. But the lion, instead of tearing him into pieces, he began to lick his hands. It was actually the same lion. All the people present were surprised to see this.
