The Fighting Illini currently are on a three-game winning streak, having defeated Rutgers (2-1) and Maryland (2-1), while tying Ohio State (1-1). The Spartans will be looking to improve on their 3-17-2 all-time record against the Illini. MSU has a 2-5-0 home record against Illinois. NORTHWESTERN: The Wildcats will be heading into this week looking to bounce back from their 3-0 loss to Penn State on Oct. 4. Northwestern will face Michigan in the first of its two road games of the weekend. The Cats have only sustained two losses this season 3-0 to Penn State as well as 1-0 against Santa Clara, Aug. 30. Northwestern has a 3-0-1 overall road record while going 1-1 at neutral opponents. Goalkeeper Lauren Clem is second in the Big Ten for shutouts (8) and shutouts per game (0.62). The Spartans hold a 13-7-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Wildcats. They hold a 6-2-1 record at home against Northwestern. The Spartans have won three out of the last five meetings. MARYLAND GAME UPDATE: MSU s previously postponed game with Maryland has been rescheduled. The Spartans will take a road trip to College Park, Maryland, Oct. 21 for a 4 p.m. kickoff. SPARTANS: Before the Rutgers goal, the Spartan backline went 326 minutes without allowing a goal. Eight Spartans have scored so far this season: freshmen Michaela Kovacs and Lexy Warner, sophomore Jamie Cheslik, junior Marisa Oleksiak, and seniors Erica Goodenough, Kirsten Evans, Allyson Krause and Mary Kathryn Fiebernitz. Lexy Warner was named the Sept. 1 Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week and again Sept. 22. She helped lead the Spartans with a 2-1 win over Dayton in the home opener, posting a goal and an assist. She had arguably the biggest game of her career in the first B1G win of the season against Iowa, as she scored both first-half goals in the 2-1 victory. The Spartans have already played four overtime games this season, matching last year s total. Jamie Cheslik and Lexy Warner tallied a career-high two assists against Michigan Sept. 25. GOALKEEPER: Gabrielle Gauruder has made 11 consecutive starts this season with four shutout wins. The first shutout came in the season opener against Niagara and the second in MSU s 1-0 OT win over New Mexico. Her most recent shutout series came in back-to-back shutouts, first in the 2OT draw with Nebraska and then the following game in the 3-0 rout of the Spartans in-state rival. She has 48 total saves so far this season. facebook.com/michiganstatewomenssoccer 1 MSU_wsoccer msu_wsoccer

Gauruder has set a career high in saves three times this season. Despite the 2-0 loss to Notre Dame, Gauruder garnered a career-high six saves, earning half of her total saves at that point in the season in just one game. She broke this record against San Francisco as she tallied seven saves. Her most recent high came with nine saves Oct. 2 against Rutgers. B1G CONFERENCE HISTORY: MSU had its best league start since 2002 with its previous 2-0-1 league record. Three games in conference competition last year featured overtime periods, including the Spartans lone tie, which came against Maryland. Of last season s nine conference losses, five were determined by one goal. Two of the losses featured overtime periods. RECORD BOOK: Allyson Krause has improved to 25th in MSU history in overall points with 38 (14 goals, 10 assists). She also sits at 23rd in career goals. Sophomore Jamie Cheslik was both the top point getter and goal scorer for the Spartans last year with 20 points (8 goals, 4 assists). Gauruder is currently sixth in the Spartan record book with her 2013 single-season high 5.40 saves per game. SPARTAN ACCOLADES: Returning All-Academic Big Ten players: Michelle Dear, Kirsten Evans, Mary Kathryn Fiebernitz, Gabrielle Gauruder, Erica Goodenough, Sarah Kovan, Allyson Krause, Megan Rafac, Caitlyn Riley, Shauna Stadelmaier, and Kelli Timar. HEAD COACH TOM SAXTON 25TH SEASON Entering his 25th season as head coach of the Michigan State women s soccer program, Tom Saxton has spent more than half of his life involved in Spartan soccer. A life-long Spartan, Saxton earned three letters as a player before returning to campus in 1986 to assist legendary Spartan soccer coach Joe Baum with both the men s and the new women s program. Saxton was appointed the second head coach in the history of the women s program on June 1, 1991. In 24 seasons, Saxton s career record stands at 229-186-43. The Spartans have posted winning seasons in five of the past seven years and in 11 of the last 15. Saxton s 2008-11 teams boasted perhaps the finest player in Michigan State history, three-time All-American Laura Heyboer. She completed her career as the most decorated player in program history, and one of the most prolific scorers in the Big Ten - she graduated with every MSU scoring record, is one of a handful of players to earn First Team All-Big Ten honors all four years of her career, and ranks fifth all-time in the Big Ten scoring list. Heyboer has gone on to a professional career, originally drafted by Sky Blue FC, and won a WPSL-Elite Championship with the Western New York Flash in 2012. Under Saxton s guidance, the Spartans have received 266 Academic All-Big Ten honors since women s soccer was incorporated into the Big Ten in 1994. Spartan players have collected a total of 39 All- Big Ten honors, including MSU s first Conference Player of the Year, Karen Winslow in 1994, and 2008 Offensive Player of the Year, Heyboer. 2008 saw Saxton lead MSU to one of its most successful seasons as the Spartans collected 14 wins - tying his career-high victory mark. Saxton also directed last season s squad to the NCAA Tournament for the third time since 2002, where the Spartans advanced to the second round. In 2009, the Spartans went 11-5-4 and posted a 4-4-2 record in Big ten Conference games, and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, losing an overtime heartbreaker to No. 11 Santa Clara. Saxton has helped the team transition seamlessly into the fabric of one of the toughest conferences in the NCAA, helping the Spartans to four NCAA Tournament appearances and 12 Big Ten Tournament trips. A two-time Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year, Saxton, earned his 150th victory in the opening-round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament. It was MSU s first-ever NCAA Tournament win. Saxton s Spartans posted a 12-6-5 record in 2005, their sixth-straight season with double-digit wins, including a 6-2-2 mark in conference action, the team s best-ever Big Ten mark. He attained his 200th victory against DePaul in the 2011 opener. facebook.com/michiganstatewomenssoccer 4 MSU_wsoccer msu_wsoccer
