Responsible for receiving work orders from the Lead person in the department. 2. Responsible for servicing buses. 3. Responsible for responding to road service calls for buses out on routes in the Houston Independent School District. 4. Responsible for recording completed work in work logs for each bus serviced. Product /Workplace Descriptions The work of a Bus Mechanic Helper with Houston Independent School District is performed in a school district involved primarily in the education of school-aged children and students grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade. The specific department in which the duties are performed is the Transportation department. More specifically, the work of this Bus Mechanic Helper takes place at the Delmar Service Center. The Bus Mechanic Helper is responsible for receiving work orders from the Lead person or Foreman at the Delmar Bus Service center. The worker is responsible for completing maintenance and service work on bus tires, various brake components, radiators, airconditioning units, heating units, batteries, starters, and other components on HISD buses. This worker is not responsible for completing engine work or other associated heavy bus mechanic work. There are no pits or heavy-duty bus lifts available at the Delmar Bus Service center. Therefore, all rebuilds of bus starters, alternators, carburetors and engines are contracted out or completed at other HISD service centers. The Bus Mechanic Helper works directly with the Bus Mechanic. The Helper could be considered HISD - Bus Mechanic Helper 1 9/26/2009

an understudy of the Bus Mechanic, but the physical requirements of the job are the same. Tire Manipulations The peak force required to overcome inertia to lift up (pull) on one side of a 295, 75R, 22.5 tire is 125.8 pounds. This lift is completed using bilateral upper extremities with supinated forearm rotation initially, and then one supinated, one pronated, or one neutrally rotated arm when the tire is moved into an upright position. The tire is rolled from one spot to another after it is moved into an upright position. The peak force required to overcome inertia to lift up (pull) on one side of a recapped 11R, 22.5 tire is 149.1 pounds. This lift is completed using bilateral upper extremities with supinated forearm rotation initially, and then one supinated, one pronated, or one neutrally rotated arm when the tire is moved into an upright position. The tire is rolled from one spot to another after it is moved into an upright position. These two peak forces are required to lift up on a tire that is laying flat on the ground in order to move the tire to place it on a bus or do other associated repair work on the tire. The Bus Mechanic Helper begins these lifts by squatting or stooping beside the tire and then placing the hands under one side of the tire. Battery Compartment Manipulations The peak force required to pull out the battery compartment tray is 90.9 pounds. This pull is completed using neutral forearm rotation with bilateral upper extremities. This pull is completed with the hands using a modified power grip around handles on each side of the tray, 22 inches above the ground, with the worker squatting. The peak force required to push in the battery compartment tray is 107.7 pounds. This push is completed using bilateral upper extremities in pronated forearm rotation with extended wrists 22 inches above the ground. Bus Hood Manipulations The peak force required to overcome inertia when opening the hood of a bus that is not spring loaded is 59.4 pounds. This push force is completed using neutral or supinated forearm rotation with extended wrists and starts at 48 inches above the ground with the elbows flexed and moving into elbow extension and shoulder flexion. The peak force required to pull down on a bus hood to close it is 98.8 pounds. This pull is completed 48 inches or higher above the ground. This pull is completed using neutral forearm rotation with the hands gripping the side of the hood with a power grip. The hood of the bus is pulled and allowed to fall down with the assistance of gravity. The newest models of buses owned by the HISD have bus hoods that are spring loaded. These forces were measured on older model buses that are encountered occasionally. Weights of objects used by Bus Mechanic Helper The weight of the largest starter used by this Bus Mechanic Helper is 46.5 pounds. The starter is lifted using a neutral or supinated grip pattern. The weight of the largest brake drum used by this Bus Mechanic Helper is 110.5 pounds. The weights of bus batteries used by this mechanic are 60.9 pounds and 58.7 pounds. These batteries are lifted using HISD - Bus Mechanic Helper 2 9/26/2009

a neutral grip by grasping a plastic handle that loops across the top of the battery. The weight of a bus radiator used by this Bus Mechanic Helper is 51.8 pounds. The weight of a bus spring used by this mechanic is 105.2 pounds. The work of a Bus Mechanic Helper with Houston Independent School District is performed indoors and outdoors in a school system environment. Temperature and humidity levels vary dependent upon the weather. The Delmar Bus Service Center is located in a large bus depot station. The ground is covered with gravel and asphalt. The worker must be able to endure the elements in order to successfully complete job related tasks and activities. The worker is at times able to work under a covering that would protect him/her from the elements. At other times, no covering is available. Tools and equipment used in this Bus Mechanic Helper include, but are not limited to the following: 10-ton hydraulic air hoists (to raise the bus when changing tires, brake components), bus transmissions, bus brake components, bus starters, bus tires, bus radiators, air impact tools (wrenches, hammers, etc ), various hand tools, bus tire racks, pry bars, creeper (rolling tray used by worker to lay on back and work on undercarriage of the bus) and heating/air-conditioning components. The HISD owns buses made by Chevrolet, Ford, Freightliner, Bluebird, Thomas, and Amtran. Regular, dependable attendance is an essential function of this position.
