Gary Pelton PHIL OLAVARRI Phil was born in Los Gatos on Dec 19, 1917; Started High School in Los Gatos and finished up at Fremont High School. Joined the US ARMY in 1939 and was stationed at Ft. Ord in a Field Artillery unit and later graduated from flight school in 1943. Piloted B-17Gs in 35 missions over Europe from Italy. Married Norma Hunter Sept 12, 1947. Celebrated their 60 TH Anniversary this past Sept. They have three children, one grandchild. Founded Kilroy Pest Control in 1956. President of Optimist Club; President of Campbell Chamber of Commerce, 1982 Campbell Citizen of the Year 1986, Member Private Industry Council of Santa Clara County 1988-1991, Member of Branch 125 since 1992. Phil was on the Guests and Visitors Committee from 1994 to 1997, the Auditor in 1998, the Assistant Secretary in 1998, and the Secretary in 1999 and 2000, and a Director in 2001 and 2002. Plays golf most weeks. Shot a 103 at Sunnyvale on Sept 5.. MESSAGE FROM THE BIG SIR We are one month into the autumn season, and the rains are here and the leaves are falling to the ground. So let's get in doors and think about getting new members into Branch 125. During the month of October we inducted three new members and we have six on the wait list. During the month of November let's get our welcome mat out and bring in new members. Remember every potential new member will receive a free lunch. Let's make retention and recruitment our number one priority at Branch 125. Our speaker for October was our own member, Dr. Jay Pinson who was the Dean of Engineering at San Jose University for 15 years. Jay was also Founder and CEO of Life Line Technologies. The title of his talk was "The Twenty Most Significant Engineering Achievements of the 20 th Century". Thank you Dr. Jay Pinson for sharing with us those significant moments of time. To everyone that did not attend our October Luncheon you missed a great time. I hope to see you at our good old fashioned turkey dinner with all the trimmings on November 20 th. The other semifinalists were Lou Bottini and Sam Zullo. Tom joins Bob Fraka in the winners circle. Bob won the Scratch Flight of the Club Championship earlier this year. Bob Norbutas Bowling Six weeks into the season and Jim Silver, Peter Morrone, and Vic Harris s team is in 1 st Place. Lou Tarnay s team is in 3 rd place, and Tomix Alvaro and Rich Madayag s team is in 15 th. Rich Madayag rolled a 210 and Peter Morrone had a 206. Vic Harris, Bowling Chairman 2007 CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON DECEMBER 18, THREE FLAMES Tuesday, November 20th is your last convenient day to purchase tickets for our annual Christmas luncheon. Bob Shields will be selling tickets for Coulotte Steak, Chicken Cordon Bleu, or Vegetarian meals at $26 per person.; the price includes dessert and table wine. Wives, ladies, and guests are welcome. This is also your last convenient chance to sign up your group ( maximum of 8) to sit together; John Feemster will have sign-up sheets for your convenience. Should you not be able to attend the luncheon on November 20th, you can contact Bob Shields at 268-4975, and John Feemster at 867-1180. Saul Miano is MC, and you know that means great entertainment John Feemster is also in charge of the gift drawing, with $800 worth of prizes. Each person will get one free gift drawing ticket, and you will be able to purchase additional tickets at the luncheon. The program includes awards and introduction of 2008 officers. Every lady will get a gift to take home. Come at 11 a.m. and dance to music by the Jack Perry trio. Lunch will be served at noon. It is no mystery why the mountain trip is becoming so popular. This year we played the Greenhorn Creek Golf Course on Tuesday and Wednesday and Lockeford Springs on Thursday. The bottom line we had three days of magnificent golf! Our accommodations at the WorldMark by Wyndham were terrific. Tuesday evening we had dinner at Murphy's Hotel and Wednesday evening we had dinner at the Greenhorn Creek Golf Course Clubhouse. Good food and wine were enjoyed by all. We had a tie for the two best ball tournament on the first day. Team # 1 winners were Neal Atchison, Lou Bottini, Marty DeVries and Larry Peck, and Team #5 winners were Darryl Jones, Gene Plevyak, Chung Song, and Chuck Waggoner. Individual leaders for the day were Bob Nelson with a net score of 67 followed by Lou Bottini and Chung Song with a net score of 68, followed by Doug Wood with a net score of 69, and Marty DeVries and Ed Metevia with a net score of 71. The two best ball first place winners for the second day were won by Bob Norbutas, Ed Metevia, Jerry Oliver, and Chung Song. The leaders after two days of Golf at Greenhorn Creek were Lou Bottini at 140, Tom Ranweler at 145, Jerry Davis, Marty DeVries, and Chung Song at 146. The two best ball first place winners for the third day at Lockeford Springs were Bob Norbutas, Jerry Oliver, Tom Ranwieler, and Jim Silver. The winner of the October 2007 three day event was Lou Bottini with a net score of 212. Congratulations go to Lou for winning our Fall 2007 golf event. A special thank you to Bob Norbutas and Jerry Oliver. Bob, thank you for your help in tracking the scores on your computer and assisting during this event. Jerry, thank you for taking pictures of this event. COMPUTER CLUB REPORT The Computer Group held its monthly meeting on Thursday 18 October '07. John Feemster provided an over view of some of the attributes of the Microsoft EXCEL program: how to construct a Summary Spreadsheet of data supported by detail data on Sub-spreadsheet for these various pieces of data; how to sort, chart, and change this data, (and how the changes in one piece of data would be changed on all other places where it is used).
