The award honors the nation s top shortstop. Alex Holderbach is second in the conference and ranks fourth in NCAA Division I baseball with 53 RBIs. In his last 10 games, junior catcher Alex Holderbach is hitting.452 with four walks, four doubles, three home runs, 20 RBIs and 10 runs scored. During that time he has a.810 slugging percentage and a.611 on-base percentage. Alex Holderbach has a reached base in 29 straight games. EKU is 11-6 in conference play this season. It s the first time Eastern has been over.500 after more than one league game since the end of the 2013 season. Eastern Kentucky has swept three OVC series this season. The first time the program has done that since 2012. EKU swept two straight OVC opponents (UT Martin and SIUE). The last time Eastern swept back-to-back three-game series against conference teams was in 2005. EKU beat No. 11 Vanderbilt, 6-5, on March 14. It was the Colonels second win this season against a top-15 team, having beaten No. 15 Virginia, 7-6, on Feb. 23. Eastern Kentucky s 6-5 win at No. 11 Vanderbilt was the program s fourth victory against a top-30 team in Edwin Thompson s three seasons as head coach. EKU beat No. 13 Mississippi State 16-12 on March 15, 2016. The Colonels knocked off No. 28 Kentucky 5-4 on May 3, 2016. Eastern downed No. 15 Virginia, 7-6, on Feb. 23, 2018. Alex Holderbach went 2-for-4 and drove in five of EKU s six runs in the team s 6-5 win at No. 11 Vanderbilt. Alex Holderbach is on the initial Johnny Bench Award watch list, which was released on March 6. Kaven Brown started and held No. 11 Vanderbilt scoreless in five and one-third innings. He gave up just three hits and struck out a season-best eight batters. It was the first complete game by an EKU pitcher since May 3, 2013 when Brent Cobb spun a complete game shutout at Eastern Illinois. Teague allowed one run on five hits, walked three and struck out five. AMAZING PITCHING During its three-game sweep of Eastern Illinois, EKU had a streak not allowing any runs in 18 straight innings. ERROR FREE DEFENSE Eastern Kentucky did not commit an error in its three-game series sweep of Eastern Illinois. FIRST START, FIRST QUALITY START In his first start of the season, Jack Piekos turned in a quality start against Eastern Illinois (April 21). The senior allowed three hits over six shutout innings, walked two and struck out seven. TEAM RANKINGS As a team, EKU leads the OVC and is 12th in the nation with 73 stolen bases. The Colonels are third in the conference and 17th nationally in doubles (83). Eastern is fourth in the OVC and 13th in the country in runs scored (297). WINNING AT EARLE COMBS STADIUM In its first season of play at the new Earle Combs Stadium, Eastern posted a 16-11 record in 2017. The Colonels are 13-4 this season and now 29-15 all-time at Combs Stadium. ALEX LIKES PLAYING TWO Junior catcher Alex Holderbach was 6-for-11 with a home run, three runs scored and six RBIs in both games combined of a doubleheader at Austin Peay (April 13). PERRY COMES BACK STRONG After missing a start due to a minor injury, senior Austin Perry turned in a strong performance at Austin Peay (April 15). After the Governors scored 29 runs combined in the first two games of the series, Perry shut out APSU over five innings, allowing just three hits, and earned the win in game three of the series. 100TH WIN AS A HEAD COACH When the Colonels beat SIU Edwardsville (April 8) to complete a three game sweep, they gave Edwin Thompson his 100th victory as a head coach. Thompson won 37 games as the head coach at Bates College and picked up his 63rd EKU win against SIUE. SEVEN STRAIGHT OVC WINS Eastern s seven-game OVC winning streak from March 25 to April 13 matched the longest conference winning streak for an EKU team since the 1990 Colonels won 15 in a row. Eastern Kentucky also had seven-game OVC winning streaks in 1999, 2000, 2005 and 2012. BACK-TO-BACK SWEEPS EKU swept two straight OVC opponents (UT Martin and SIUE). The last time Eastern swept back-to-back three-game series against conference teams was in 2005. GRAND SLAM Alex Holderbach hit a grand slam in the sixth inning of EKU s game against SIU Edwardsville (April 8), turning a two-run lead into a six-run advantage and helping Eastern complete the sweep. He finished that game 2-for-5 with two runs and five RBIs. INSIDE THE PARK Daniel Harris IV hit a two-run, inside the park home run in game one of a doubleheader against SIU Edwardsville (April 6). Harris ripped a ball into right field that bounced off the wall and rattled around the visiting bull pen. He finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs. TEAGUE QUALITY AGAIN Against Southern Illinois Edwardsville (April 6), Logan Teague turned in his second quality start over his last three appearances. Teague tossed six innings, allowed one run on five hits, walked one and struck out four. FRESHMAN HOMER Freshman Brandon Dehass hit his first collegiate home run against Xavier (April 3). The 3-run shot got Eastern within four, 13-9. PLAYER OF THE WEEK Outfielder Nick Howie was chosen as the OVC Player of the Week (April 2) and the College Sports Madness OVC Player of the Week (April 2). In four games, the sophomore hit.471 with two runs scored, two home runs and 11 RBIs. Howie posted a.824 slugging percentage and a.526 on-base percentage. Howie was instrumental in EKU s threegame sweep of Tennessee-Martin. He drove in eight runs in the final two games of the series combined. His home run in the eighth inning of the series finale proved to be the game-winning run. He finished 3-for-5 with a run scored. 4 RBI GAME FOR HOLDY Alex Holderbach drove in four of EKU s five runs in a 5-3 victory in game one of a doubleheader at Tennessee-Martin (March 30). He went 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. THE COLONEL NINE In Eastern s series clinching 4-3 victory over Morehead State, nine different Colonels registered one hit each. ANOTHER QUALITY START FOR PERRY Austin Perry limited the second-best hitting team in the OVC to just three hits in six innings while earning the win over Morehead State (March 25). He allowed three unearned runs and struck out three. QUALITY START FOR TEAGUE Logan Teague turned in his first quality start of the season when he tossed six innings in a win over Morehead State (March 23). BEATING NO. 11 VANDERBILT Eastern Kentucky jumped out to a 5-0 lead at No. 11 Vanderbilt (March 14) and then held off a ninth inning Commodore comeback bid for a 6-5 win. TWO TOP-15 WINS EKU s victory at No. 11 Vanderbilt (March 14) was the Colonels second win this season against a top-15 team. Eastern beat No. 15 Virginia (Feb. 23) by a score of 7-6. FOUR WINS AGAINST TOP-30 TEAMS Eastern Kentucky s 6-5 win at No. 11 Vanderbilt (March 14) was the program s fourth victory against a top-30 team in Edwin Thompson s three years as head coach. EKU beat No. 13 Mississippi State 16-12 on March 15, 2016. The Colonels knocked off No. 28 Kentucky, 5-4, on May 3, 2016. This season, Eastern beat No. 15 Virginia (Feb. 23), 7-6. HOLDERBACH BLASTS THE COMMODORES Alex Holderbach drove in five of EKU s six runs in a 6-5 win at No. 11 Vanderbilt (March 14). The junior had a RBI ground out in the first (2-0), a two-run single (4-0) in the third, a RBI single (5-0) in the seventh and a sacrifice fly (6-1) in the ninth. BIG START BY BROWN Kaven Brown started in Eastern s win at No. 11 Vanderbilt (March 14) and held the Commodores scoreless over five and onethird innings. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out a season-best eight. TABLE SETTERS Cornell Nixon and Ryland Kerr, EKU s No. 1 and No. 2 hitters, scored two runs each in the Colonels 6-5 win at No. 11 Vanderbilt (March 14). The duo combined to go 3-for-6 with three walks. JOHNNY BENCH AWARD WATCH LIST Junior Alex Holderbach was chosen to the Johnny Bench Award watch list on March 6. The junior is one of just four OVC catchers on the list. The award is given annually to the top NCAA Division I catcher. MAC ATTACK Daniel McFarland went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs in EKU s win at Western Kentucky (March 13). SLAMMING THE DOOR In his first appearance in his new role as the team s closer, Aaron Ochsenbein slammed the door shut on Western Kentucky (March 13) to earn his second career save. The junior retired all three batters he faced, on 11 pitches, including two strikeouts. RIVALRY WIN In the first of two games this season between the long-time rivals, Eastern Kentucky beat Western Kentucky, 7-5, on March 13 in Bowling Green. COOKING THE EAGLES In the three-game series against Coppin State, Ryland Kerr was 10-for-13 (.769) with six runs and four RBIs. Among his 10 hits were four doubles and a triple for a total of 16 bases. He posted a 1.231 slugging percentage. SEASON HIGH STRIKE OUTS Austin Perry struck out a season-best eight batters in a quality start and win over Coppin State (March 3). He allowed one run on six hits and walked three in six innings. CAREER HIGH STRIKE OUTS Aaron Ochsenbein struck out a careerbest eight batters while pitching five scoreless innings against Coppin State (March 2). He allowed just three hits and walked four. SHUTOUT Five Eastern Kentucky pitchers combined to shutout Bowling Green (Feb. 28). Logan Teague started and limited the Falcons to four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out three in five innings. TOUGH AGAINST RANKED TEAMS Redshirt freshman Darren Williams made his first two relief appearances this season against No. 13 Louisville and No. 15 Virginia. He did not allow a run in 5.2 innings, gave up three hits, walked two and struck out three against those ranked opponents. FIRST HOME RUN FOR HARRIS Freshman Daniel Harris IV hit his first collegiate home run at No. 15 Virginia (Feb. 24). He finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. STRONG AGAINST NO. 13 Eastern Kentucky fell 4-2 at No. 13 Louisville (Feb. 20). All six runs were scored in the first two innings. EKU allowed just two hits after the second inning. WHAT A RELIEF Three pitchers combined to provide six innings of scoreless relief against No. 13 Louisville (Feb. 20). Darren Williams allowed two hits in four innings of work. Mitch Zamora and Max Ford each pitched one inning without allowing a hit. NOW THAT S A FIRST IMPRESSION Redshirt freshman Darren Williams made his collegiate debut at No. 13 Louisville (Feb. 20). He allowed just two hits while pitching four innings of scoreless relief. He walked one and struck out two. 2018 PRESEASON ALL-OVC Junior Alex Holderbach was chosen to the 2018 Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Team. Holderbach, a utility player from Fairfield, Ohio, hit.355 last season with 11 home runs, 39 runs scored and 49 RBIs. He was second on the team in home runs and RBIs, and third in batting average. SERVING THE COMMUNITY The baseball team served 150 local children by washing their feet and giving them a new pair of shoes on Jan. 15. The event was part of the National Day of Service campaign by Samaritan s Feet. Another 100 local children that could not make it received shoes as well. After washing each child s feet and fitting them with a new pair of shoes, the children, grades K-5, were able to test out their new shoes by playing games with the team. WATCH OUT FOR THESE FRESHMEN The baseball team has two of the top freshmen in the Ohio Valley Conference, according to Perfect Game. Daniel Harris IV was ranked as the number one freshman in the OVC coming into the season. He is a 5-foot-11, 152-pound shortstop from Stone Mountain, Georgia. As a senior at Miller Grove High, Harris had a batting average of.492 with two home runs. He was named to the Perfect Game Top-500 his senior year. He was also named a Rawlings Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American. Eddie Satisky was ranked as the 11th-best freshman in the OVC. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Satisky is a right-handed pitcher from Lexington, Kentucky. He helped Lafayette High School win back-to-back districts titles. THREE DRAFTED IN LAST TWO YEARS EKU has had three players drafted in the last two seasons, which is also Edwin Thompson s first two seasons as head coach. RETURNING PLAYERS Eastern Kentucky returns six starters, including the designated hitter, and has six pitchers returning from last season s team.
