The Ranch Owners have agreed to let us start calendar year 2015 on the second weekend in January. So our first matches will be on Saturday January 10 and Sunday January 11. In cooperation with the hunters, who will still be on the ranch in January and February, we ask that you not arrive before 8:00 AM and be prepared to be off the ranch before 4:00 PM each day. That weekend will also be the final two days of the SASS Convention in San Antonio. I am hoping that some of those Conventioneers decide to visit and shoot with us on one or both of those days. If you have a chance to spread the word suggest it as a great way to close out their trip to the Convention this year. At that first match I will call for a vote on the amended By-Laws that we proposed and distributed by email on December 10. Please take the opportunity to review them and be prepared to cast your vote in January. If you have any questions please submit them by email in advance of the meeting so we may try to resolve them as early as possible. Finally this has been a really fun and rewarding year for me. I absolutely appreciate all of you who participate and contribute to the success of the Texican Rangers. Speaking for myself and all of the Officers, I hope you all have the MERRIEST CHRISTMAS ever this year as well as a very Happy and Safe NEW YEAR celebration. I look forward to seeing and shooting with you in January 2015! Texican Rangers, let s ride! Yuma Jack 2

Texas falls in the Southwest Region and Central Division and the new structure for 2015 will be: State (Plum Creek, Lockhart, Texas) Regional (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) Divisional (Sparta, Illinois) National (Winter Range) World (End of Trail) 3

THE CHRISTMAS COWBOY The year was 1947 and the already popular Singing Cowboy, Gene Autry, recorded Here Comes Santa Claus. Gene co-wrote the song with Oakley Haldeman and it was this song that lead to Autry being labeled the Christmas Cowboy. Autry is said to have gotten the idea for the song after riding his horse in the 1946 Santa Claus Lane Parade. He wrote the song and Haldeman set it to music. After the 1947 release he sang the song in the 1949 movie The Cowboy and the Indian and re-recorded the song in 1953 and 1957. As the Christmas Cowboy he also recorded Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer and continued to participate in numerous Hollywood Christmas Parades including serving as the Grand Marshal in 1980. Autry s recording of Rudolph hit No.1 on the Billboard pop singles chart the week of Christmas 1949 and eventually sold over 25 million copies. In the 1920s Autry s parents moved to southern Oklahoma where Autry worked on his father s ranch while at school. He left high school in 1925 and worked as a telegrapher for the railway. During the long hours working as a telegrapher, Autry would pass the time singing while playing his guitar, a habit that would eventually get him fired! Will Rogers, who had heard Autry sing, encouraged him to sing professionally. Autry went to New York to audition for RCA Victor. Autry was turned down due to the fact that the record company had just signed two very similar artists. He returned to Oklahoma and starting singing on the radio as Oklahoma s Yodeling Cowboy. In 1929 Autry signed his first record deal with Columbia Records. In the early recording days, Autry sang various genres. Orvon Grover Autry was born on September 29, 1907 in Tioga in north Texas. He retired from show business in 1964. He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1969 and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970. Autry died at the age of 91 in California and is buried at the Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills Cemetery. Autry s first hit was in 1932 with That Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine which he recorded with Jimmy Long. Autry made over 600 recordings, 300 of which he wrote or co-wrote. His recordings have sold over 100 million copies and he has many gold and platinum recordings. (continued on page 5) 4

THE CHRISTMAS COWBOY (continued from page 4) During WWII, Autry enlisted in the United States Army and became a tech sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps. In June of 1944 he earned his service pilot rating and served as a C-109 transport pilot with the rank of flight officer. Assigned to a unit of the Air Transport Command, he flew as part of the dangerous airlift operation over the Himalayas between India and China, nicknamed the Hump. After the War, Autry returned to films. It was at this time that Autry joined with Pat Buttram who would star with Autry in over 40 films and 100 episodes of the Gene Autry television show. Gene Autry was the first of the singing cowboys in films but he opened the genre for many, such as Roy Rogers, to follow. Autry had a hit radio show on CBS from 1940-1956, Gene Autry s Melody Ranch. In addition, Champion, Autry s horse, had his own radio series, The Adventures of Champion. It was from these radio shows and his popularity with children that Autry created the Cowboy Code or Ten Cowboy Commandments: In 1934, film producer Nat Levine paired Gene Autry and Smiley Burnette, as part of a singing cowboy quartet, in the Mascot Pictures film In Old Santa Fe. In 1935 Levine made Autry the star of the 12-part serial The Phantom Empire. Mascot Pictures became a part of the newly formed Republic Pictures and Autry went along to make a further 44 films up to 1940, all B Westerns in which he played under his own name, rode his horse, Champion, had Burnette as his regular sidekick, and had many opportunities to sing in each film. The Cowboy must never shoot first, hit a smaller man, or take unfair advantage. He must never go back on his word, or a trust confided in him. He must always tell the truth. He must be gentle with children, the elderly, and animals. He must not advocate or possess racially or religiously intolerant ideas. He must help people in distress. He must be a good worker. He must keep himself clean in thought, speech, action, and personal habits. He must respect women, parents and his nation s laws. The Cowboy is a patriot. 5
