With the holidays behind us it is time to move ahead with those New Year Resolutions, right? I don t know about you but I packed on a few extra avoirdupois since October. So now we can start to work it off with work days, matches and more matches. Just in time, we had a work day on January 21 to set up targets for the upcoming match and to begin repairs to the floor of the outhouses across from the Oriental and to our loading and unloading tables. Our first match of calendar year 2014 is January 25 and 26 with the shooter s meeting at 9:00 AM. We will move into our regular schedule of the second weekend starting in February. This year any active duty US Military Service members may shoot monthly matches free of charge in appreciation of their service. Although we already have two matches toward the 2014 annual awards behind us, don t forget that we have added some new categories which may interest you if in pursuit of some more bling for your mantle. Those categories are Silver Senior Duelist, Senior Gunfighter, Frontier Cartridge Gunfighter, Cattle Baron and Cattle Baroness. Based on the trend toward expanding the age-based categories, I tried to push for Silver Senior Frontier Cartridge Gunfighter but got no support from the Board on that. In case you have not been otherwise notified, the Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA) is holding the 2014 Cowboy Action State Match at Old Fort Parker, January 31 st February 2 nd, 2014. It will be a 10 stage match with 6 stages on Saturday and 4 stages on Sunday. There will be a warm-up match and a Wild Bunch Match on Friday. The awards will be presented on Sunday after the match. All SASS categories will be honored even if only one shooter registers for a category. If you are familiar with shooting at Fort Parker you know you can expect the targets to be big and close and the shooting fast and furious. You can contact Shotglass at txshotglass@sbcglobal.net plus we have included the registration form in this newsletter. (continued on page 2) Page 1 of 16

TSRA is our State extension of the National Rifle Association (NRA) which we need to support if we value maintaining our right to bear arms and keeping our sport alive. Hope to see some of you there. And speaking of matches we already have 30+ shooters signed up for Comancheria Days 2014. If you haven t submitted your registration it is time to do so soon. The ad and flyer should appear in the February issue of The Cowboy Chronicle TM. Again this year s match, held on 9-13 April 2014, will mark the 20 th Anniversary of the Texican Rangers as a club. Shooting Iron Miller is running at full steam on putting together a fun and exciting match this year. Be sure to join us. See the message in this issue from Shooting Iron Miller as well as more developing information on the Texican Rangers new website which right now is headlining none other than Shooting Iron Miller herself. Yes, I said new website. It is up and running now so check it out at http://texicanrangers.org. The application for Comancheria Days 2014 is there as well as scores for the matches in September and October that count toward 2014 awards and the planned calendar for the year. The site is still being developed by Agarita Annie as we speak and our goal is to make it as shooter friendly as possible. So if you have some ideas or wants let us know, and if you have a problem tell Annie. I expect there will be a revival of discussions about scoring systems during this year. By that I mean rank scoring versus total time. The Texican Rangers have always used total time scoring to the best of my knowledge but new software systems and many other clubs using rank scoring makes me think it deserves another look. If you have an opinion, let me know it. We will try to get it sorted out for at least this year if not for evermore. And did you hear the one about the two SASS Wild Bunch members who walked into the bar at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio? Well it could really happen because, as published in the January issue of The Cowboy Chronicle TM, that is where the SASS Convention for 2014 is going to be held. I have never had the opportunity to stay at the Menger but I can t think of a better reason. Stand by cause I m anticipating some fallout in the form of expected participation on the part of local clubs. Don t know just sayin. (Continued on page 3) Page 2 of 16

HOWDY, TEXICAN RANGERS (Continued from page 2) Before closing I want to take the opportunity to lament the recent loss of one of our long time and stalwart Texican Rangers, Old Reed, SASS #28619 (aka Ron Wilde). He informed us in September that he was selling his ranch and moving near Dallas to be close to his grandchildren. In October he confirmed he had sold his ranch and that that would be his last match with the Texicans. Then right after the start of the New Year we learned he had passed away in December! When I first started shooting here in Texas back in 00, I often tried to get on a posse with Old Reed and Double Dare Kid (aka Denny Welch). Back then Old Reed s alias was Wagon Man and he and Double Dare Kid traveled together to many of the same matches that I was attending here with the Texicans and the Alamo Area Moderators. Wagon Man was accurate and consistent with heavily loaded.45s but Double Dare Kid was pretty quick with his.44-40 rifle and sixguns. Old Reed landed a prominent role in a small independent movie called The Separated. He was recruited for the movie at a Texican Rangers match along with many other present and former Texican Rangers as well as Becky Patterson s son Sky. In fact he changed his alias from Wagon Man to Old Reed after that movie, taking the name of the character he portrayed in the movie. Old Reed was a wood-working artist and also seemed to like to tinker with black powder toys like cannons. He used to fire his cannon to kick-off Comancheria Days and has participated regularly in most range workdays. In fact if you look around you can still see some of his handiwork, including many of the signs around the range, and most recently in the train station clock which he made and gave to the club. Double Dare Kid rode off to the range up in the sky a couple years back and now he has been joined by one of his pards. I was sorry to see Old Reed move away but now I am further saddened in the knowledge that he will not be returning. He will be remembered and a marker will be placed in the Texican Ranger Memorial Cemetery next to the Mission. So that s it for now, amigos. But if you haven't paid your dues for 2014, be sure to bring it ($24) to the January match along with the completed waiver. And, if possible, bring your registration for Comancheria Days. Stay warm, stay thirsty and we will shoot again in February on the second weekend rain or shine. Texican Rangers, let s ride! Yuma Jack WILD BUNCH BLAZING SADDLES You want to have some FUN?????? Come and join us at Comancheria Days 2014 and participate in our newest event..blazing Saddles Wild Bunch Edition. Yes, you read that right! On Friday after the Main Match stages have been shot you will have the opportunity to shoot Blazing Saddles using your 1911. Now that is reason enough to get you application to CD 2014 filled out and sent in. Page 3 of 16

MESSAGE FROM THE MATCH DIRECTOR I can t think of anything right that would be more fun than spending a few beautiful days in early April at historic Stieler Ranch, visiting and shooting with great friends! We all have that opportunity this year April 10 13, 2014, so mark your calendar now! I d love to see each and every one of you out there this year as we host Comancheria Days 2014 (CD 2014). It s fast approaching and I m really getting excited about it. We have so much planned for this event that I can promise you won t be disappointed in the least! This year marks a very special year it s the 20 th anniversary of the Texican Rangers. We have so much to be thankful for and proud of as this club has evolved over the years. Lots of folks have put in countless hours to make it better and better. I d really like for everyone to come out and celebrate with us! Take Your Best Shot Contest (For Registered Shooters Only) We ve developed a contest that any and all CD 2014 shooters may enter. It s called Take Your Best Shot. All you have to do is guess which ten gunslingers will be highlighted in the Main Match during CD2014! Pretty simple, right? The contest form will be sent to you in the confirmation email you receive once you register for the shoot. When you receive it, I dare you to take a stab at it and send it back in! The process is easy. Just complete the form and email it back to texicanrangers@yahoo.com or you can drop it in the mail if your confirmation was initially mailed to you. Just remember, we must receive the form no later than April 1 for you to qualify to enter the contest. The first ten entrants who come closest to guessing all ten gunslingers will win a prize, so get your registration in for CD2014 if you haven t already! We will have several side matches available on Thursday, along with Wild Bunch, of course! We can t have an annual match without it, especially since I just L-O-V-E to shoot my 1911. We have some really exciting news to share will be bringing back The Shooting Gallery! Several of you probably remember when we had this set up a few years back. This year we will make it available near The Gallows Friday afternoon, after the Main Match stages are done, so it will be easy to get to and lots of fun! We will also have Blazing Saddles with a twist we will shoot it with 1911 s so come prepared with guns and ammo and plan to have a blast! And all posses need to be ready for the Posse Shoot! Bring some extra rifle ammo to cut a timber in half in record time. Best time wins! Sunday we will host Master Gunfighter you never know who will win this one. As you can see, the CD 2014 committee is working hard to make this the best Comancheria Days ever! We want to see you there, so sign up soon! If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, don t hesitate to contact me. My email is a_fite@sbcglobal.net By the way, if you get any crazy emails from this email address, they aren t coming from me, they are coming from Sheriff Robert Love! I hope to see you on the trail at various shoots between now and April. Be sure to be on the lookout for more CD 2014 information. Shooting Iron Miller Page 4 of 16

WADDIES NEEDED Are you a waddy? Do you know what a waddy is? No, it is not what you get your panties in when you are angry or upset!! A waddy is a cowboy slang term that originated around 1895-1900. Today it is used at places like Endof-Trail and around the country with cowboy shooting clubs to label those wonderful, hard-working people we call VOLUNTEERS. A shoot like Comancheria Days 2014 does not come together by itself. It takes the work of many volunteers, mostly behind the scenes, to make the event look so good and like it just happened. Lots need to get done to make such an event success: the range needs work prior to the shoot, shooters need to be registered, shooters need to be parked, stages need to be set, targets need to be painted, Side Matches need to be manned, banquet halls need to be decorated, Posse Marshals need to keep order among the chaos and yes, toilet paper needs to be put into the outhouses! We are asking that you become a WADDY for Comancheria Days 2014. Even if you are shooting, you can still be a waddy during the time when you are not shooting. Yes, you will still have time to visit Sutter s Row and to grab one of Buzzie s delicious sandwiches. If you are able to help us out and would like to be a WADDY, please send an email to me at: Culebra Blaze wilebiker@yahoo.com Culebra Blaze Page 5 of 16

ON THE RANGE Well we had a very successful first workday of 2014 on January 21 st. Fifteen very amble bodied volunteers showed up to help us set up the range, install range markers, work on the floor of the old outhouse, repair loading and unloading tables and paint. As with any plan, it is always subject to change as Sheriff Robert Love, Bross and Gee Pee discovered at the old outhouse.probably would have been quicker to tear the old outhouse down than to repair it! The more they took it apart to repair the floor the more they discovered and basically had to remove the entire base structure and rebuild it. It wasn t only the outhouse that turned out to be more than expected. Howdy Nabor, Skyhawk Hans and El Paso Lee soon learned that you can t rebuild a rotten old loading or unloading table instead you start from scratch and build three new tables!! Wildcat Bob, Quintana, Marshall Willy, Lars Christopherson, Gee Pee and Dirty Dog Dale were busy setting up the shooting line. Each year in October we pull all the targets up behind the stages to remove the temptation from the deer hunters who occupy the ranch from November until the end of January. So the first workday of each year is spent hauling all those targets back out to the line and making sure we are ready for the first shoot of the year. In 2013, Yuma Jack had us do a target inventory to identify what kinds and sizes of targets we had. For the most part our targets fit within the guidelines established by SASS for target size. Yuma Jack also wanted to make sure that in 2014 our shooting distances were also within the guidelines established by SASS so we have added distance markers to the stages set as SASS minimum distances so that we position all of our targets no farther than the distances recommend by SASS. Thanks to Lars Christopherson, Marshall Willy, Shooting Iron Miller and Agarita Annie for tackling the task of painting the loading and unloading tables. All those important brace pieces which are so important to the tables stability create a painter s challenge. Maybe next time we can have some folks bring their paint sprayers! A special thanks to Shooting Iron Miller for the great green salad and fruit salad and to Agarita Annie for the chili dogs. A great meal on a slightly chilly day! We have workdays scheduled for the Tuesday BEFORE each shoot weekend. Our next workday will be on February 4 th. We gather at the ranch about 9-9:30, work, eat, work and head home around 3:00. If you are able to help us out, we look forward to having you join us on the 4 th watch your email or the website for more information. Nueces Slim Page 7 of 16

I recognize the inherent dangers of injury and/or death associated with Cowboy Action Shooting and will not handle or discharge firearm(s) in a manner that may be unsafe to others or me. Adams St. Fredericksburg, Texas 78624 Phone: 800-TEX-JACK (800-839-5225) Phone: 830-997-3213 Fax: 830-997-6074 e-mail: sales@texasjacks.com www.texasjacks.com MAN AT THE POT Do you know what happens when this phrase is said? No, it does not refer to Sheriff Robert Love, Bross and Gee Pee working on the outhouse this past week! When you hear Man at the Pot you are probably sitting around the ole campfire. According to camp etiquette, when a cowboy got up to refill his cup from the coffee pot hanging over the campfire, if someone shouted man at the pot the man at the coffee pot was required to fill everyone s cup.
