From the desk of the President: With fall being here already we are gearing up for our end of the year events. The fall auction will have already taken place, the Fish-O-Rama will occur in November, and the Christmas Party will be in December. With the exception of December, we will be having two more general meetings for 2005. In addition, elections will be coming up at the January 2006 general meeting. We will start taking nominations at the November general meeting for officers and board member positions. With the nominations for the elections coming up, it is time for everybody to start thinking about whom you may want to nominate for the officer and board member positions. If you want to increase your involvement in the club and get involved in some of the decision-making processes, this is a good way to get started. In addition, if you have an interest in any of the activities that we have please take into consideration that we do have chairperson positions that need to be filled or in some cases having a person function as a cochair can also help tremendously. New ideas and fresh thinking is always in demand. If you are a member that is interested in attending a board meeting to see what we do, please let me know and I will give you the date and location information. I hope to see as many members as possible attend the year -end events so that we may close out 2005 as another successful year in the history of the Milwaukee Aquarium Society. Best regards, Aaron J. DID YOU KNOW??? A LITTLE GOSSIP, NEWS, ETC. ABOUT OUR CLUB MEMBERS THAT S NOT NECESSARILY FISH-RELATED. Did you know that we have two club members who have officially joined the over the hill gang? Bonnie King celebrated the 19th anniversary of her 21st birthday on October 4th. Aaron Glass turns the big 40 on November 16th. Also celebrating birthdays in October and November are Dwight Lehman on October 14th, Betty Michels on October 15th, and Katelyn Michels, daughter of Jeff and Kerri, and granddaughter of Jerry and Betty Michels, will celebrate her first birthday on November 11th. Happy Birthday to all! Michael and Robin Schadle are again proud grandparents for the fourth time. Congratulations! Don t forget to sign up for our Christmas party, which will be held on Sunday, December 4th at the Mitchell Park Domes Pavilion. I know Ken King is doing vocal exercise to gear up for the now infamous funny money auction. 2005 SPECIALIST BREEDERS UPDATE
SPLASHING THROUGH THE EXCHANGES By Austin Braganza, MAS Fall has brought with it the cold winds. I put my pond away early this year, so I don't have to chip the ice off the Lily pots like last year. I was lucky the Water Lilies did survive, so remember to take those plants in before that first frost. Remove the leaves and place the pot in a cool dark garbage bag or bucket. Keep the plants wet or at the least moist and in a spot that does not freeze. If using a garbage bag you can cover the plant with wet newspapers. If you plan on wintering your Lilies in your pond outdoors, snap off the leaves and submerge the pot so it falls to the bottom of a part of the pond that does not freeze. At Spring time a food tablet for water plants placed a couple of inches from the tuber and some sunlight will have the plant shooting out new leaves and it will be rearing to go outdoors. A Plastic Plant Primer by Jerry Michels reprinted in the Fin Flap August 2005 from the EIAA (Eastern Iowa Aquarium Society) I have to say that this article is very creatively written and I found myself reading the article over again. An interesting hint from George and Vickie Coy's article titled Danios with Zip SWMAS South Western Michigan Aquarium Society recommends www.fishbase.org to search for the proper Latin names if fish. Barclaya longifolia By Warren E. Berg Jr., MAS During one of my frequent local fish store trips, a small bulb plant caught my eye. It wasn t much to look at; it was just a brown hairy bulb with a few tiny young leaves coming out. It was marked Barclaya Bulb" and the price was right. I had never seen this plant for sale before but I had seen a few photographs and watercolors of it in the past. I didn t remember it being all that special but it was different. At this point I had kept many of the bread and butter centerpiece plants and I told myself if I had to look at another Amazon Sword Plant I would pull my hair out! It was time to have one of the staff pull me out this hairy little lump. All I needed now was a place to put it, as I was pretty limited on space. I decided to clear out some Pigmy Chain Swords in the front of my 37-gallon aquarium and I made a large enough clearing so the Barclaya would not be too shaded. My substrate was a base layer of soil and peat with a top layer of about 1 ½ in. of Flourite. The water was soft, 1 part tap to 2 parts R. O. The top of the bulb was obvious because it had 5 to 7 small red leaves sticking out. I stuck it down in the substrate with only the very top exposed. The tank was lit with 2 or 3 X 55watt 6700k power compact bulbs with reflectors. I had an old CO2 system hooked up also. Everything was in place. It was nice to have a small splash of red in this tank of wall-towall green. Steadily bigger leaf after bigger leaf grew. So far it was turning into a nice plant. It was now about 10" and still growing, too tall for a foreground plant. It didn t stop there. It choked about 2/3 of the tank with burgundy red leaves that were about 20" long. What a monster! To top it all off it produced a red & green flower. then another. and another. As the flowers rotted away many small round fuzzy seeds fell out and spread out over the gravel. Unfortunately the Barclaya was
just too big and it had to go. As carefully as I could, I pulled it up. This muddy mess produced not one huge plant but instead three large ones! 2 of them went to Pets n Things and one went to New York via AquaBid. The story doesn t end there. I still find baby Barclayas growing here and there. I don t know exactly where they are coming from but there is always someone happy to take them off my hands. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2005 M.A.S. Corydoras sterbai Be Patient By Terry Tanksersley, MAS I have finally successfully spawned a Corydoras catfish. These fish were purchased at the MAS spring auction in April 2004. If you are not familiar with the Sterbai catfish, let me do a brief description. They are around two inches in length and the body color is somewhat bronze with yellow spots covering it. They have orange fins, which make this one of the best looking cory cats in the hobby. Now for the spawning of the fish. They were placed in a 20 gallon long tank with a sponge filter and a Whisper II power filter. The tank was kept at 80 degrees by an Ebo Jager submersible 150-watt heater. Four-foot fluorescent lights provide lighting in the fish room. Some sand was added along with some driftwood. The water has a ph around 7.2 and comes from a well. At the time the fish were added to the tank they were around one-half inch and there were eight of them. I fed them baby brine, sinking trout chow and assorted flake foods. They grew pretty fast and it looked lie there were five males and three females. From what I have been told this ratio was good. The fish spawned in January of 2005 for the first time. The eggs were left and were either eaten by snails or the catfish; I am not quite sure which. The cats spawned on a regular basis and I tried putting the eggs in smaller containers but they would fungus so I added Moroxy, but they still didn t hatch. This went on until June, when I added some spawning mops to the tank. The cats spawned in the most and removal was easier. I just put the mops in the smaller container and they hatched. It seems the eggs are very sensitive to light, which the mops blocked out. The fry were fed baby brine shrimp. After 35 years in the hobby, I have my first Corydoras catfish spawn. Patience paid off.
Apistogramma Bitaeniata The Natural Way By Edward Curran II curran@milwpc.com For the first time, I decided to attend the Milwaukee Aquarium Society s swap meet and was surprised. There were a lot of people and a lot fish and fish related items. As I was walking through, with four kids in tow, I found three items I was interested in. One an aquarium was sold and the other two were fish, Betta unimaculata and Apistogramma bitaeniata blue F/O. So the kids and I made our purchases and were on our way. Upon arrival at home the Bettas were put in there own tengallon tank, only to have four of them commit suicide via the long jump to the floor, leaving only two left. The Apistos were put in a forty-gallon breeder with four-six various discus and a shoal of cardinal tetras. The three fish immediately went to the bottom and set up shop in the only two caves I provided. The environment is set up for South American cichlids, low Ph (6.3), no hardness, some plants and a temperature of 86F. I do frequent water changes of 25% once a week and use power and sponge filters to help maintain the water. The fish are feed a diet of flake food, frozen brine and some live white worms. This diet and the tank conditions seemed very favorable for the Apistos, three weeks later they spawned in one of the caves. Most of the time I take the eggs or fry away from the female but this time I decided to see what would happen. The little female stood guard over her cave and would go in to fan them or when startled. At the fourth day I noticed little wrigglers in the cave and a very protective female. Again I thought of pulling the fry, BAP jitters, but held back and I m glad I did. When the fry became free swimming they could be seen schooling around the cave and following the mother around the
tank. She is so protective that no other fish or me could get near her fry, I don t think she lost any. The fry were given nothing special, micro worms and cyclope-eze along with the food the other fish were eating. Boy did they grow. I ll bet they grew twice as fast as fry that I pulled from other Apistos and with less loss. Some of the fry are ¾ to 1 in length and are starting to color up. With this spawn I learned two things 1) go to the swap meet and 2) sometimes it s better to let the adults raise the fry. Till next time happy breeding.
