ACADEMY VISION To create the premier School Hockey Academy in terms of player development, coaching delivery as well as the enhancement of resources and equipment. To strive for excellence in the development of players and coaches delivering optimal elite training programmes. To extend individuals to achieve excellence in areas of sporting, academic and personal life. Support for students in all area of school life is essential. Hastings Boys High School 1 st XI (Pictured above) All of the 2015 HBHS 1 st XI Hockey Squad, that played in the Elite Schools Rankin Cup, came through the HBHS Junior Academy Programme. Several squad members represent Central Region at U21 and U18 Level with Goal Keeper Sean Crook representing NZ Under 18s Lee Phillips (Pictured Right) HBHS 1 st XI Player Lee Phillips has been in the 1 st XI since Year 9, while in the Junior Academy. In 2016 he will become the most capped HBHS 1 st XI hockey player of all time
ACADEMY OBJECTIVES HBHS 1 st XI and Junior Academy Coach Dean Hulls Mr Hulls has coached Central National Hockey League teams. His previous role was HB Hockey Academy and Reps Manager. Mr Hulls is also an Athletics NZ Gold Sprint Coach. He has coached NZ Athletics teams at the Oceania Regional and the Junior U20 World Champsionships in 2016. To assist the development of hockey at regional and national levels by aligning playing styles, coaching programmes and philosophies. Extend coaching programmes into feeder schools and local clubs by the enhancement of coaching links. Produce a successful 1st XI hockey team and a structured player pathway which delivers Hawke s Bay, Central Region & NZ representative players. Set clear strategic, measurable targets & goals in all areas of players sporting, academic and personal life.

IDENTIFICATION OF ACADEMY MEMBERS Entrance to the Hockey Academy is by application. Student numbers will be limited. Prospective new entrants to the school should contact Mr Hulls to discuss the programme. Current students will be judged on commitment to training and matches, attendance, behaviour and academic performance. Academy students are required to sign a contract. They will be set targets in terms of attendance, motivation, homework, behaviour and academic performance which MUST be maintained if they wish to stay in the programme. Elite & Development student athletes, including current 1 st XI players, will be expected to take part in an elite training programme. This includes holiday booster clinics and additional fitness sessions.

Balanced Development Hockey academy coaches ensure student athletes meet all of their responsibilities in a balanced manner. Agreed personnal targets are specific, achievable and measured. They are strictly monitored and progress detailed in student reports. Log books require stakeholders in all areas of students lives to have input and review progress. Hockey academy coaches work closely with form tutors, curriculum subject teachers, year level deans and senior management to ensure that there is a balanced, holistic approch to each students development. Students are introduced to additional areas of personal developments such as nutrition, mental and emotional skills, Individual Peformance Plan development, personnal and team objectives.
VIDEO ANALYSIS TECHNICAL & TACTICAL Hastings Boys High School hockey teams and the academy uses the most advanced digital analysis programs on the market. SportsCode Elite (Tactical Analysis) The Hastings Boys High School hockey programme has access to Sportstec s Sports Code Elite video analysis software. This is one of the most powerful tactical performance analysis software package available. It is currently used by the NZ Senior National Teams and all Regional age group teams. Elite is the only real time analysis and statistical package that enables you to truly see the game. Elite allows real time information, in Academy Sessions and team matches, for more in-depth analysis. As such there s a significant acceleration in the development of Hockey Students at Hastings Boys. Hudl Technique (Technical Skills Analysis) Technique is used by student athletes and coaches to improve feedback through slow motion video analysis. The software records and breaks down players techniques for instant feedback during a practice or game. The Elite software allows video feedback to be posted directly to each student so they re able to review in their own time on their own smart devices. Both coach feedback, notes or comparison to elite athletes can be added to the feedback.
