Or"AR'ADE TOO POWERFUL FOR C U G Nine goals in second term paved way for win Old Scotch well beaten by Ivanhoe By GEORGE McTAGGART Old Paradians proved too strong for Coburg in the First Semi-final last Saturday and ran out winners by 50 points. A 9-goal burst by Parade (B Section premiers last season) took them to a 19-point lead at the interval and they finished all over their opponents. Coburg, premiers in 1969, failed by two points in the 1970 Grand Final, and were eliminated by St. Bernard's in the First Semi-final last season. Old Scotch started well in the B Section First Semi-final against Ivanhoe, but faded right out of it in the second half to be beaten by more than 11 goals. First goal came up to Parade but Coburg hit back strongly for 3 quick goals, and they continued to apply the pressure to go to a lead of 4 goals. Coburg were showing plenty of dash and were leading in the race for the ball, as well as having the call over Parade in the air. Parade missed chances in front of goal and although they had equal scoring shots they trailed by 20 points at quarter-time. It was goal for goal early in the second term, each side scoring two. But then two quick ones to Parade cut their leeway to 8 points. They missed several chances to gain the lead but eventually hit the front. It was a feast of goals in this quarter, Parade kicking 9 and Coburg 3, and Parade were 19 points in front at the interval. Parade had gained the ascendancy in the air now and this gave them a lot of drive. Both sides found goals harder to score in the third quarter but the game was still fast and entertaining. Parade edged further ahead when they added 4.6 to Coburg's 3 straight goals and held a 31-point lead at threequarter-time. Coburg battled desperately to bridge the gap and reduced their deficit to 20 points, which brought them back into the game, but Parade came again and scored two quick goals to make the game safe. Then they got three more for good measure. Old Scotch kicked 7 goals in the first quarter against Ivanhoe and led by 9 points, but Ivanhoe came back strongly in the second term and were 10 points in front at half-time. It had been an even first half, but Ivanhoe looked to be gaining the upper hand towards the end of the second quarter. They proved much too strong in the second half when they kicked 11.14 to Scotch's 3.5 and ran right away to a very easy win. Scotch had beaten them by more than 7 goals when they met at Elsternwick Park only a month previously. A burst of 8 goals in the first quarter was a big factor in Power House's exciting win over St. Kilda CBC. This was another goal-kicking feast as 13 were scored in that first term. St. Kilda were 22 points behind at the first change but had crept to within 14 points at the interval. Each side kicked 2 goals in the third quarter when Power House led by 9 points and in a great struggle held St. Kilda off to score by 4 points (16.13 to 15.15). were locked together in an even encounter with the scores level at quarter-time and half-time. But Reservoir broke away in the third term to lead by 27 points and went further ahead to run out winners by 39 points. LaTrobe Blacks put up a poor showing against Parkside who never looked in danger of defeat and finished nearly 10 goals in front. Brunswick got away from Old Brighton in the second quarter to take a handy lead of 21 points at the interval but Brighton were within 3 points at the last change and finished on to score by 4 goals. Old Ivanhoe had the game sewn up in the first quarter when they kicked 10.4 to Glenhuntly's 1.6. Glenhuntly added 6 goals in the third term in an effort to make a game of it but Old Ivanhoe's accuracy (24.8) gave them a 70-point win. State Savings Bank scored a surprise win over Marcellin, who were unable to match the Bank in the second half. Bank led by 2 points at the interval but kicked 6 goals in the third quarter and another 5 in the last to win by 6 goals. Old Mentonians were far too strong for St. Bede's, and led all day to win by nearly 6 goals. They won it in the first quarter, really, by kicking 5.3 to 4 behinds. Old Camberwell took charge after the first quarter to score by 40 points over Elsternwick. In the Junior Section games, St. Bernard's had no trouble in beating Monash University who were never in the game and went down by 13 goals. A 6-goal burst in the second term by Ormond took them to a lead of 7 points over Power House at half-time, but a devastating last quarter by House left Ormond standing. House kicked 10 goals straight to Ormond's 2 points and won by more than 11 goals. In Section 2, Caulfield Grammarians looked set for a win over Coburg when they led by 5 goals at the interval. They were still 11 points in front at three-quarter-time but Coburg swamped them in the last quarter and won by 4 goals. University Blues led North Old Boys by 7 goals at the last change but North made a bold bid for victory in the final term and went down by only 8 points, Blues kicking 22.9 to 20.13. Monash Blues kicked 7 goals in the second quarter of the Reserves game against North Old Boys which paved the way for them to score an easy win. Geelong beat Old Trinity by 10 points in a low-scoring game and St. Kilda CBC lost their first game for the season when they went down to Reservoir Old Boys by 6 points in a very even game. Hampton Rovers trailed St. Kevin's by 15 points at half-time but kicked 7 goals in the third quarter and held St. Kevin's off to win by 2 points. Old Ivanhoe beat Marcellin by 3 goals after leading by nearly twice that margin at the interval, AJAX thrashed State Savings Bank, and Monash Whites finished too strongly for Old Camberwell and won by 5 points. Reservoir Old Boys, Old Brighton, State Savings Bank and Old Camberwell became assured of promotion to a higher section next year by winning the second semi-final in their respective sections. University Blues, winners of the second semi-final in Junior Section 2, will go into Section 1 in 1973. The winners of today's B Section second semi-final will play in the top grade next season. IMPORTANT NOTE S AT ELSTERNMCK PARK ADMISSION TICKETS Admission tickets issued to clubs for matches at Elsternwick Park are for the use of players and officials only. Any player who cannot produce a ticket will be required to pay for admittance. CAR PARKING Drivers who are not willing to park cars as directed at Elsternwick Park, will he refused admittance to the ground. SCOREBOARD Clubs are advised that the Scoring Board at Elsternwick Park must be operated by responsible club officials at all times. Children must not be allowed in the Scoring Board. CORRECT SCORES ESSENTIAL Clubs are reminded that correc t scores must be phoned to the Herald office, otherwise a fine (one dollar) will be incurred. And remember, too, that scores are incomplete without the points - offending clubs will be fined. ELIGIBILITY OF PLAYERS FOR RESERVE AND JUNIOR SECTION FINAL S The attention of clubs is drawn to the restrictions which apply concerning players eligible to take part in Final matches in the 'Reserve and Junior Sections. The Rule relating to eligibility of players in Reserve Section Finals now reads: A player who has been a member of a senior team of any club in nine or more matches during the homeand-home matches in any season shall not be eligible for inclusion in the reserve team of a club taking part in a final match in the same season unless both the senior and reserve teams are participating in a final match on the same day. Provided that no player shall be eligible for inclusion in a reserve team taking part in a final match in any season unless such player has been a member of such reserve team in at least TWO home-and-home matches during the said season. JUNIORS A player who has been a member of a senior or reserve team in more than five matches during any season shall be ineligible for inclusion in a junior team taking part in a semifinal, final or grand-final match in the SAME SEASON UNLESS he has been a member of the junior team for more than five matches in the same season. BALL BRIEFS DOUBLE CENTURY TO ST. KILDA CHAMPION The senior playing member of the famed White family John White Jnr. plays his 200th game in today's preliminary. To list John's achievements at St. Kilda CBOC says all that needs to be said of his value to the club. Exsenior captain, committee member on countless occasions, serving in the most onerous positions and currently vice-captain of the Reserves, it is doubtful that this club has been better served by any individual on and off the field. A tribute to his ability is that in the veteran stage of his career he has notched 92 majors in senior and reserves matches this season alone and with two possible games left, he should become our first "tonner". Always scrupulously fair on the field and a tireless worker off it, John is a credit to Amateur Football in general, his family, and most of all to this club which could not be more fortunate in having such a member. Well done John on a truly magnificent effort. (You'll have to play next year, Whitey, only seven games off the club record). Greg Walker reached a new century for Old Ivanhoe in the last home match when he reached, and passed, 100 goals for the season - the first man from the club to make the `ton' in one season. Greg did it well, with 13 goals for the match. Then he came out in the first semi-final against Glenhuntly and kicked a devastating 14 goals. A wonderful juggling high mark and (most of the time) deadly accurate kick, Greg now has 123 goals for the season - with the grateful congratulations of his team mates and coach, Kevin McLean. Parkside's fortunes in the finals have allowed another player to reach his 50th game. The honour this time goes to Brian Harvey affectionately known as 'The Lip'. Earlier in the year `Lip' was switched from a forward flank to the wing and for the first semi found himself back on the flank. Parkside congratulate 'Lip' on this 50th. Geelong utility player Alan Trevaskis recently played his 50th consecutive senior game. Now up to 56, Alan 21, alias "Spartacus" or "Trolly" has been a most consistent player. This year has been his best season and should see him do well when best and fairest votes are counted at club level. TRIBUNAL (August 5th Round) R. J. Coad (Geelong Reserves) was found guilty of striking W. N. Taylor (UHS Old Boys Reserves) and suspended for four matches. (August 12th Round) S. Spinner (Brunswick Juniors) was found guilty of striking P. Baquie (University Blues Juniors) and suspended for two matches. (August 19th Round ) G. O'Meara (St. Patrick's O.C.) and N. Vernon (St. Kevin's O.B.) were found guilty of striking each other and each was suspended for two matches. K. Linton (West Brunswick) was found guilty of striking A. L. LOOKING BACK (By Noel Runxue) 5 YEARS AGO Old Paradians who lost only two games in the first round, and both to Melbourne High turned the tables to run out winners 15.11 to 10.12. Best were Proctor, Sambell, Ford (Old Paradians) and Needham, Turnbull, Macdonald (M.H.S.). North Old Boys (13.7) triumphed over U.H.S. Old Boys (10.12) in the replay of the `B' Section first semifinal, while Uni Blues (13.13) soundly defeated Ormond (7.7). Preliminary final results in other sections were:- 'C' Section Monash University (15.9) d. St. Bernards O.C. (6.2). `D' Section St. Pats (10.12) d. Parkside (9.11). `E' Section Assumption (15.10) d. Old Trinity (11.13). 1972's interstate captain, Bruce Bourne (Ormond) was that club's best player in the final of the juniors. West Brunswick 12.18 defeated St. Kilda C.B.O.C. 6.12 in `C' section final to win the right to meet Kew in the Grand Final. Best for the winners were Park, Thompson, Nash while White, Sweeney and Hoy kept the losers in in the game. Alphington were to meet Old Xaverians in the Grand Final. 20 YEARS AGO Ormond and Ivanhoe, hot favourites in `A' and 'B' sections were beaten by Univ Blues and MHSOB respectively. Blues won 13.12 to 7.9 while Ivanhoe kicked themselves to defeat, 7.19 to 10.6. Stars for the Blues in, their defeat of Ormond were Peter Bevilacqua, Bill Mating, and Mick Eggleston. Elsternwick beat Coburg in `C' section second semi - 9.8 to 7.13 while St. Kevins defeated Caulfield Gram. 10.12 to 8.14 to take the `D' section premiership. Old Scotch beat Ormond 10.14 to 7.15 in the Junior Section Final and were to meet again in the Grand Final. BEST AND FAIREST AWARD S North Old Boys wingman, Leo Carney, won the Best and Fairest award in A Section with 15 points. He polled four first votes, one second and one third, to beat another wingman, Peter Burt, of Old Paradians, by a point. Burt received three firsts, a second and three thirds (14 points) with Kevin Power, also of North Old Boys in third place, with 13 points. The award in B Section went to Old Carey ruckman, Mike Birrell, who was the winner last season, he received five firsts and four seconds for a total of 23 points and won by six points from Old Scotch veteran, Brian Steele, who also received five firsts, with two thirds. In C Section, the winner was Mitch McKenzie, of Old Xaverians, who polled 30 points - seven firsts, three seconds and three thirds. His nearest rival was eight points away. It was even more clear cut in D Section, where the winner, Rick Thomas, of Old Brighton, (who also received 30 points), had no less than 12 points to spare.
