Ten Canadian eams, including Burnyk, have accomplished he fea. Finishing firs in he round robin wih an 11-0 record gave Gushue he hammer in he firs end bu he had o draw near he edge of he buon jus o score one. However, Canada ook conrol wih single seals in he second and hird ends hanks o din sliding oo far, firs of all wih a draw in he second and on a akeou in he hird. Alhough din managed o pick up a single in he fourh and a seal in he sixh only he second solen end Canada has surrendered a he championship he game was decided in he sevenh when Gushue scored hree and he Norhlands Coliseum crowd eruped ino a long, loud cheer. Once we go he seal in he second we really fel we were in conrol of he game, said Gushue. You have o be careful anyime you play a good eam ha when you ge up you can expec o run away wih i agains a eam like Niklas. They re going o keep making some freezes and making some good shos. You ry and leave yourself some good angles so you always have a sho. We didn do a good job of ha in he sixh end, bu overall I hough we played very well and kep heir chances down o a minimum. Gushue sho 88 per cen while Nichols was 90, Gallan 93 and Walker 93. Canada is idle unil he final Sunday (6 p.m.) and will awai he winner of Saurday s semifinal (7 p.m. MT). Page 4 2017 Ford World Men s Curling Championship Y OPNR SATURDAY, APRIL 8, 2017 arly misses cosly Swedish skip Niklas din wasn sharp in his game Friday. Rough sars sinks Sweden By JOHN KOROBANIK ye Opener Wrier arly misses cos Niklas din and Sweden a chance o sop Brad Gushue and Team Canada s relenless drive o he goldmedal game a he Ford World Men s Curling Championship, presened by Service xpers. din and his eammaes forced Gushue o ake one in he firs end bu hen gave up seals in he nex wo o pu hemselves in a deep hole hey could never recover from, losing 7-4 in Friday s Page 1-2 game. I was he sar, said din, who now plays in he semifinal onigh agains he winner of he Page 3-4 game beween Peer de Cruz of Swizerland and John Shuser of he U.S. We were half an inch away from sealing in he firs end and close o geing wo in he second, bu I roll ou in he akeou. A bi of frusraion creeps in. Wih his final sho in he second din didn make he draw he waned hrough a por, leaving himself exposed and Gushue made him pay. I was a difficul draw, wasn sure of he speed, din said. Then he makes a perfec sho. When we missed ha, go down 2-0, i was uphill from here. The Swedes, who won he world championship in 2013 and 2015, did figh back o ge i o 3-2 bu din admied heir chances were very slim. ven when we go back in i a lile bi on he scoreboard I would say we had slim o none chances o win. I was he sar. We needed o generae eiher he seal in he firs or deuce in he second and hen we ve go a whole differen siuaion. When we re down 3-0 we re no going o win. din, who was curling jus 64 per cen hrough seven ends, came up shor on a freeze aemp in he sevenh. Gushue kicked ou ha rock o coun hree for a 6-2 margin and cruised hrough he final hree ends. Bu we played a solid game, din insised. Those early poins ha didn go our way, wen heir way insead. Tha changed he game. Me and (hird) Oskar (riksson) missed a couple of shos and if you miss shos on he back end hey re going o seal. Saisically din had his second wors game of he compeiion, shooing jus 70 per cen. riksson was slighly beer a 81. Bu second Rasmus Wrana and lead Henrik Leek boh held up heir end of hings, each shooing 98 per cen. Tickes from $22.50 curling.ca/ickes Page 5 World Men s Curling Championship Swiss a confiden bunch Pumped afer a grea week I will be a relaxed Swiss eam ha akes o he ice in he Page 3-4 playoff game his afernoon, confiden hey have he game o exend heir week a he Ford World Men s Curling Championship, presened by Service xpers. The eam, skipped by Peer de Cruz wih Benoî Schwarz hrowing fourh sone, finished he round-robin a 8-3, he same record as heir opponen oday, John Schuser of he U.S. We had a grea week and I hink we learned a lo of hings, Schwarz said afer he wo eams compleed heir pracice session Friday. We played on his ice and I really hink we have a lo of confidence now so i s going o be ineresing (oday). Schwarz, de Cruz, who hrows second sone, and eammaes Claudio Päz (hird sone) and Valenin Tanner, had a srong sar o he week bu finished win-loss-win-loss. Wednesday we played Sweden, when we had a slow sar, and we los also o Canada, which played, well, really well, said Schwarz. I s okay o lose when he oher eam is making almos everyhing, bu I hink we know he misakes we made and I m quie sure we will correc hem for (oday). Their oher defea was a somewha surprising loss o China in heir final game. Swizerland did bea he U.S. on opening day, 7-4, by sealing one in he firs end and deuces in he fourh, sevenh and ninh ends. Schwarz said i s difficul o say if oday s game will be as igh as heir round-robin mach because ice condiions are differen. Also differen is Swizerland will have he firs-end By JOHN KOROBANIK ye Opener Wrier hammer. Hammer in he firs end in men s game is huge so hopefully we can (ake advanage), he said. The only hing we wan is ied game wih hammer in he las end, so if hammer in he firs end can help o do ha we re happy. While Schwarz is he second-younges player hrowing fourh sone here he younges in he playoffs he s quie comforable when he pressure is on wih las rock o decide he game. I hink I had a leas hree or four rocks for he win during he week and I hink I made all of hem, and hey were no all easy shos. The eams pracised for an hour Friday afer which Schwarz said he s happy wih he ice. Wha I like is here is a lo of curl, which means you can have a lo of offence, which we like. Bu he ice is also good o defence so if you can ge he lead i s a bonus. The oher, unpredicable elemen in play could be experience. The Swiss foursome is relaively young, alhough hey were all a he 2014 world s where hey won he bronze medal. Shuser s squad had he edge in age and experience. xperience is good and i s imporan, agreed Schwarz. I can help you o win. Bu I don hink you HAV o have experience o win, ha s my opinion. I s nice o have bu i s no mus have. The game goes a 2 p.m. wih he winner advancing o he evening semifinal and he loser dropping o he bronze-medal game Sunday a noon. Skip Peer de Cruz and his Swiss eam learned los his week. Shuser looks for a huge rush By GRANT GRANGR ye Opener Associae dior John Shuser had he day off from he curling wars so naurally he ook his wife Sarah and sons Luke, 3, and Logan, 1, o he waer park a Wes dmonon Mall Saurday morning. I didn ake i easy, I wen down hose crazy slides. I love a good rush, admied Shuser shorly afer compleing a lae afernoon pracice in preparaion for oday s Page 3-4 playoff game agains Swizerland (2 p.m.). The U.S. skip a he 2017 Ford World Men s Curling Championship has cerainly no been aking i easy on opponens over he las few days, winning six sraigh games. He d ge anoher big rush if he could no only bea he Swiss bu go on o win he world. The las six games we ve come ou and really played excepional curling as a eam. When someone missed a sho or wo here and here he res of his eam members picked him up, said Shuser. I know I have he eam capable of puing ogeher hree games ha could win his hing. Shuser, hird Tyler George, second Ma Hamilon, lead John Landseiner, alernae Joe Polo and coach Phil Drobnick have been here before. Las year, as a maer of fac. They bea Japan s Yusuke Morozumi 6-4 in he 3-4 game in conroversial fashion. On Morozumi s las sho in he eighh end, as he rules permied, Shuser placed a rock biing he rings ha had been bumped by anoher ha had already hi he side board. The Japanese fel i was going ou of he house bu Shuser didn. He wen on o score hree in he end, bu hen laer los 9-3 o Denmark s Rasmus Sjerne in he semifinal. See SHUSTR Page 13

Page 6 2017 Ford World Men s Curling Championship Y OPNR SATURDAY, APRIL 8, 2017 World Men s Curling Championship Q&A Wih Kaherine Henderson, CO Curling Canada Q. You officially began your new posiion las April. How has he pas year gone for you? A. I has been a seep learning curve bu i s been a very good year. I came ino a place where he saff and he board know heir jobs very well. They undersand curling and he curling communiy. I s exremely helpful o be able o sep ino a siuaion where I m surrounded by expers who can help me ge hrough some of he issues we have o grapple wih. I cerainly helped me ge up o speed and o help me make, over he long haul, he righ decisions. Q. You re a woman in a posiion ha has hisorically belonged o a man. Has here been any opposiion o you in ha way? A. I ve found he curling communiy quie gracious. They wan wha s good for curling. I have no come across anyone who has pu my femaleness in he way of a good conversaion. I ve come in and people have welcomed me as heir chief execuive officer. And I m quie graeful for ha, and if here is ha old-fashioned I-don -see-women-in-hose-ype-of-posiions aiude, I haven run across i. Q. Wha is your mos imporan goal in improving he spor? You have menioned in he pas ha improving he spor begins a he grassroos level. Is ha sill he case? A. The grassroos level is criical in any spor. I s criical because evenually hose grassroos-level curlers, which may be a small percenage, urn ino your high-performance curlers. They re he ones who keep clubs open, hey re he ones who buy ickes, wach our evens in heir homes on elevision, and he ones who voluneer. Geing a curler early and ofen is a criical par of a good spors sraegy when i is a spor like curling ha is played for life. I would say 99.9 per cen of curling is played a he communiy level, and i s an imporan par of he communiy. I s a par of finess, social aciviy, spending ime wih friends and family. Keeping hose curlers in clubs and making sure hey have places o go and leagues o play in is criically imporan o keeping he spor healhy. Q. Rocks & Rings is very imporan o you. Do you see ha as he firs sep in geing kids involved in he spor and evenually ino he mainsream of curling? See HNDRSON OPPOSIT PAG

Tickes from $22.50 curling.ca/ickes Page 7 Henderson A. We ve made he decision o provide kids wih an equal opporuniy o ge involved in he spor. I s really imporan for us. Because i s played on ice, and in a club, i s very difficul o expose young people o he spor wihou going ino he school. You ofen need a relaive or paren ha plays he spor o ge involved. The makeup of Canada has changed in many differen ways. I s changed from he muliude of spors we re exposed o, in erms of people who are new o our counry, some have never played spors on ice before. Also in erms of urban and rural. We find ha geing ino schools and leing kids see wha a wonderful game we have is really imporan because i promoes an ineres in he spor. The way o move hose kids and ha happiness of rying somehing new ino hinking his migh be a spor for hem is geing hem on he ice on a regular basis and making sure hey, and heir family and he people who suppor hem, have he means and undersanding ha we can ge hese kids playing on an ongoing basis and make i a spor for life. Q. Is afforabiliy a facor in wheher kids ge involved in he spor? A. We hink i is. There isn a spor ou here where here isn some sor of cos. Relaive o oher ice and snow spors, curling cerainly is quie an affordable spor. We do have ways and means o make sure here is no child lef behind, and for kids who ruly can afford i here are ways in which, wih our parners, we can make sure ha can happen. Affordabiliy is a real posiive hing. You need o be close o he ice, o a curling club, and you need someone o ake you here. And hen when you re here and his is where we re working really hard here has o be a level of organizaion. We re doing a nice job of making sure ha if a kid wans o play, we are no puing any obsacles in he way. Q You ve alked and lisened o he member associaions his pas year. Wha are hey elling you? A. The good hing abou member associaions is ha Curling Canada issues are heir issues as well. There s a real willingness o co-parner. They re concerned abou members, recruimen and keeping heir clubs full and making sure young people are exposed o he spor. Our member associaions are full of ruly excepion individuals who undersand ha spors a he grassroos level is doing really, really well. Their concerns are our concerns. My lisening isn jus ell me wha your problems are bu more of ell me how we can work ogeher in order o solve hese problems. Q. Curling club survival has been an issue laely in he spor. Is here anyhing Curling Canada can do o help sruggling clubs o coninue o operae successfully? A. We absoluely can. These are our concerns if ha s heir concern. We re here o represen he ineress of he members. Bu i goes o some of he hings we ve jus alked abou, like making sure a a baseline level we are creaing a pipeline of fuure curlers and by invesing in programs ha are in school and in afer-school programs... by exposing curling o he broades number of people. Bu oher hings, oo, such as mainaining cerain levels of coaching sandards and o deliver he resources ha hese clubs need for heir members. We have been experimening wih acual recruimen ino clubs, which we hink is criically imporan, and we ve been working wih some of he clubs in order o deliver some programs ha go above and beyond wha we ve been able o deliver in he pas in geing more people ino hose clubs. We ve been working very hard wih clubs in dealing wih areas where hey are sruggling, like infrasrucure, or energy coss, and hings like ha. These are hings you can do in isolaion. We do i in parnership wih our members and we ry o develop soluions ha can be applied on a naional basis. Q. Canada is a world leader in inernaional curling. How does Canada keep on op, i seems, year afer year? A. Maybe his is a bi of a philisophical answer, bu spor isn jus spor, i s also culural, and if you go around he world, you find ha ou in mos cases, and you see children paricipaing a a higher level of ahleicism end o ge looked a and recruied and are pushed ino spors ha are naional favouries. Soccer in Brazil, for example. New Zealand and rugby. In Canada curling is near and dear o many people. When hey see a child or grandchild, or a suden of heir s who seems o have a lo of alen, hey may be seering hem owards a spor ha people in heir communiy love and hey love hemselves, and ha would be curling. We end up, many imes, wih some of our bes ahlees being sreaming ino curling. Our faciliies and infrasrucure is also second-onone. The availabiliy of ice, coaches, insrucors, officials and voluneers is enormous here. If you re a child saring ou in he game, you re surrounded by people who really know wha hey re doing. I s deeply imbedded o who we are as Canadians. Q. How imporan is Curling Canada s relaionship wih TSN. A. I see TSN very much as a parner. TSN has done a remendous job of bringing curling ino he homes of people who would oherwise no be able o enjoy i he way even-goers do. There s a difference beween a broadcas and being a an even, bu TSN ges you as close as you possibly can o he experience of being here. The exposure hey bring o our ahlees, o he game and he qualiy of he commenary, he educaion hey are able o deliver abou he game, is really second-o-none. We couldn be happier o have parnered wih TSN and we wan hem o coninue o bring more curling o more people. Shuser FROM PAG 5 Wha we can ake from i, and las year had he conroversial crap going on in he eighh end, and i really made he shor ime in beween really difficul, said Shuser, who bea Japan again for he bronze. Bu I hink we realized when you play he 3-4 game how imporan ha wo-hour window is beween draws. If we can ge a win hen we can really focus on geing ready for he nigh game differenly han las year, ha s for sure. The Swiss bea he Americans 7-4 in he second draw of he round robin las Saurday, he even s firs day when he ice was misbehaving. We ll definiely have a beer bead on he ice han we did ha one, Shuser said. They re a grea curling eam. They really are a op 10 eam in he world, and anyime you play a op 10 eam in he world if you make misakes hey re going o capialize on hem. George, who along wih Hamilon and Landseiner has been wih Shuser for hree years, feels he eam has o be aggressive agains he Swiss. We feel like we ve go o bea hem in (o he house). Page 14 2017 Ford World Men s Curling Championship Y OPNR SATURDAY, APRIL 8, 2017 Going ou wih a bang By JOHN KOROBANIK ye Opener Wrier The Ford World Men s Curling Championship is subiled The Las Hurrah a farewell o Norhlands Coliseum, a building ha has produced some of curling s mos memorable evens. A final decision on he fuure of he Coliseum hasn been made, bu depending on wha does happen curling s Las Hurrah may no be jus o Norhlands, bu o dmonon. Wihou Norhlands he only oher obvious faciliy in he ciy migh be he new Rogers Place, bu ha would pu curling a odds once again wih he dmonon Oilers. Tha s no been an amiable associaion in he pas, when he Oilers were in he Coliseum and prey much in conrol of he building. We haven ried o negoiae wih (Oilers nerainmen Group) ye, bu hisorically, when he Oilers were in his building hey were very hard o deal wih, said Terry Morris, even manager for his ediion of he Ford World Men s Curling Championship, presened by Service xpers, who has been involved in organizing every major curling even in he building since 1987. Tickes from $22.50 curling.ca/ickes Page 15 Norhlands FROM PAG 14 Now hey have conrol of he whole building hemselves, whereas in he pas we had Norhlands involved and Norhlands always wen o bale for us, wih he Oilers. Now ha you re dealing direcly wih OG, he chances of geing a good deal down here, a cos effecive soluion you migh say, for curling, migh no be possible. Randy Ferbey, who skipped he Ferbey Four o his fourh Brier championship in his building in 2005 he mos successful Brier in hisory lamens he possible end of major curling evens in he ciy. I s unforunae ha i may never come back o dmonon again, he Brier, he said. dmonon s a grea curling communiy, bu I don know if we can afford o go ino Rogers Place. Tha s a concern being expressed by ohers as well he cos of going ino Rogers. Plus, i s ime o ge ino smaller faciliies, given he declining aendance a curling evens. I s going o be a whole new challenge wih all his suff moving forward, said Warren Hansen, former direcor of even operaions for Curling Canada. I m no sure in he near fuure if hese big buildings are wha should be on he horizon. I needs o be refocused, recalculaed and approached in a lile differen way. Curling Canada is already going ino smaller communiies. Oher han he Tim Horons Roar of he Rings Olympic Trials, which will be in he 18,000-sea Canadian Tire Cenre in Oawa, Curling Canada s four oher major evens nex year are in buildings seaing 7,000 or less. We know he icke sales aren wha hey used o be so we re pulling back a bi, said Morris. We re looking a more affordable buildings and ha means smaller buildings. We don have o be in a 13,000, 14,000 sea arena. This week in Norhlands proved ha. Weekday crowds were abysmal. Forunaely weekend crowds were fairly impressive so Sunday s final should presen a fond farewell o he building. Norhlands Coliseum will never go down as one of he grea arenas of Norh America. Tha disincion will go o such venerable buildings as Madison Square Garden, he Monreal Forum, Maple Leaf Gardens and Joe Louis Arena. Bu cerainly wha wen on over he years inside Norhlands Coliseum was every bi as exciing and meaningful as wha wen on in hose oher major league buildings. Norhlands (also known a various imes as Skyreach Cenre and Rexall Place) was home o arguably he greaes collecion of hockey alen in he mid- 80s when Wayne Grezky and he Oilers dominaed he Naional Hockey League. The Oilers won five Sanley Cups and did so wih a flair and imaginaion ha was, a imes, breahaking o wach. Breahaking also was he aendance a some of he greaes curling evens in he world, beginning wih he 1999 Brier, he Las Shooou of he Cenury. We were back here in 2005 which was he bigges Brier and will probably be he bigges curling even in hisory for a long, long ime wih 281,000 fans, recalled Hansen. Then back here wih men s world in 2007, I hink ha was abou 170,000-plus aendance, which was anoher record se. The (Olympic) Trials here in 2009, anoher huge even. And probably he smalles one we did in he building, probably nex o his even, would be he Brier in 2013, and I hink we sill hi abou 170,000, so here s been a lo of grea memories for curling for sure. And he hinks his migh be he only building where ran a successful Brier, men s worlds and Trials all in he same faciliy. If his is going o be he las major sporing even in Norhlands before i is laid o res, hen his a fiing finale o he building ha opened Nov. 10, 1974 and was buil as par of he venue consrucion for he 1978 Commonwealh Games. Depending on wha happens o he building, his even could very well also be curling s las hurrah o dmonon. I m no sure in he near fuure if hese big buildings are wha should be on he horizon.
