Source: Facebook Fantastic results from the SA Open Walking Championships Lebogang Shange, narrowly won the South African men s Open 20km racewalk championship in Stellenbosch with a time of 1:20:42 from Wayne Snyman (1:20:46). Lebogang missed the National record that he set earlier this year by 36 seconds as he walked to the second best performance of his career. For Wayne it was a PB, improving on his previous best by nearly a minute. Perhaps the most spectacular fact about this race is that these two performances are the fastest two 20 km racewalk results ever recorded in South Africa! The results were both well within the Olympic Qualifying time of 1:24:00. Not to be outdone Anel Oosthuizen raced a 1:37:21, for another excellent performance after recently breaking the long held South African record. in South Africa is clearly having a new dawn! With 4 walkers (Marc Mundell for the 50km is the fourth) having now walked excellent qualifiers for the Olympics. Lebogang is currently lying second in the IAAF challenge (http://www.iaaf.org/competitions/iaaf-race-walking-challenge/standings/2016/men) after having been in the lead for several weeks. Sparks will fly at the African Championships in Durban in June! 20 km Men - finishers Lebogang Shange 26 CGA 1:20:42 Wayne Snyman 31 AGN 1:20:46 Sizwe Ndebele 22 AGN 1:28:58 Mthembi Chauque 23 AFS 1:29:22 Aaron Mahlangu 25 KZNA 1:34:59 Lewis Molise 28 CGA 1:36:02 Lindokuhle Ntombela 23 KZNA 1:41:01 Mthunzi Mnisi 28 AGN 1:41:58 Dannyboy Sehemo 21 CGA 1:42:09 10 km Junior Women - finishers Annette Koen 17 ACNW 51:32.0 Salume Heymans 18 AFS 1:01:36 20 km Women - finishers Anel Oosthuizen 21 CGA 1:37:21 Corli Swart 25 AGW 1:41:46 Zelda Schultz 24 KZNA 1:44:18 Natalie Le Roux 34 KZNA 1:44:55 10 km Junior Men - finishers Thumisang Pule 19 AGN 46:35.0 Hanru Colling 17 Bola 47:11.9 Pierre Vermaak 18 CGA 50:32.7 Vusi Hlongwane 19 CGA 51:53.0 Jacques Heymans 16 AFS 55:15.4 Russel Pratt 17 ASWD 57:27.1 Source: http://liveresults.co.za, Various The SA Masters Championships are coming The 40th South Africa Masters Athletics Track & Field Championships will be presented on the 13th and 14th May 2016 at Pilditch Stadium, Pretoria. Closing date for entries is on the 3rd May 2016. Track racewalking events are 5000m for men and woman (age split at 55) on Friday 13th and there are 10 and 20 km road walks for men and women on Saturday morning. With several of our masters walkers gearing up for the world Masters Championships in Perth, I expect some brilliant performances at the SAMA champs this year. Winnie Koekemoer has been an avid sportswoman since her school days, In 1999 she started running again with the dream of completing a comrades when she turned 50. She did not finish her first comrades but did complete one in 2003 in the creditable time of 10:45. Later Winnie took part in the 702 Walk the Talk and came 3 rd in her first walk ever! That is when she realised that perhaps racewalking was for her and when she adopted racewalking as her premier sport some six years ago she brought with her a hunger for competition and for being the winner. Whilst some people may feel that this strong desire to compete is not a good thing, I would disagree and Winnie has brought it to a fine art. Off the track she is gracious, friendly and always has something positive to say. Once in a race however, beware! And no it does not matter if you are in a different age category, or even that you are male, Winnie will race you to the finish! Winnie obtained her SAMA colours for racewalking in the 55-59 age category in 2010. She had hoped to compete internationally in Brazil, but unfortunately had to nurse an injury and it was worthwhile because she came back strongly and went to the WMA Champs in France in 2015. Here Winnie performed well bringing home three Bronze medals and also being in the ladies 20km team that took silver! She walked a 30:31,69 for the 5000m track walk whilst in the 10 and 20 km road races she walked 01:02:36 and 02:09:02 respectively! In the ladies 20 km challenge Lesley van Buuren, Ronel Viljoen and Winne clocked a total time was 06:10.42 for the silver medal. WMAC medals France 2015 However Winnie does not consider herself a self-made racewalker she is clear that without the lifetime coaching of the late Steve Rautenbach as well as specific racewalking coaching received from Chris Britz and Wayne Snyman she would not have achieved to the levels that she has. Winnie on the Podium WMAC 2015 France Winnie is currently in good form and is looking forward to achieving better times in May at the 40th South Africa Masters Athletics Track & Field Championships. She is also planning to go to the WMA championships in Perth this year as well as taking part in the 2017 event in New Zealand. Winnie loves travel and there is no better way to do it than combining travel with her favourite sport! Winnie and Elsa Meyer at the AGNMA champs Winnie s favourite quote is from Steve Rautenbach who would always tell her Your best is good enough. Source: Celeste Ruck & Chris C. Issue 1 5 April 2016

Editorial I have wanted to produce a newsletter for the racewalking community for a couple of years. There are great newsletters available in other parts of the world, but it is quite a task to get started and have the commitment to continue! So now I have started and I intend to bring out one a month. The standard format will probably be only two pages, but there were so many results to record, that this first one is a little longer than planned. Of course nothing is set in stone, so I may bring out special editions and the newsletter may vary in size. My hope is that you the reader will take the value of such a newsletter to build community in the sport to heart and contribute! There are many ways in which you could contribute. For example you can send me a race report of a race you have done, you could send me photos that you have taken, you could suggest people for the Racewalker of the month slot, and even send interviews and photos to match. (I will acknowledge all inputs). Any input would have value to me including things that I could perhaps do better (but just remember like you, my time is limited). So, how about it? Make it YOUR newsletter rather than mine be a part of the fabric of South African. I think we really are entering a golden period for the sport and that in just a few years time we will have thousands of competitive racewalkers this will keep us all on our toes and will do wonders for our sport. Despoina Zapounidou of Greece has walked a stunning 42:55.85 to set a new Greek record for the distance. The previous record was held by Athanasia Tsoumeleka (44:10:02) and was set on April 17, 2004. Open Statistics! In this section I will in the future present the best racewalkers over various distances in South Africa. The listing will be based on a methodology that evens out differences due to age and sex. It is worked on the same basis of the graded times that I have already included with some results in this newsletter. As an example of how this works have a look at Barbara Nel s spectacular time (01:01) in the WPA 10 km event. Now have a look at the time for Peggy Reid (01:17). Although Peggy s time is much slower than Barbara s, if one takes out the age factor by applying a graded time then Peggy just beat Barbara! Sat 30 Apr.
