And since 1936, Sun Valley has held that distinction. Born out of a desire to bring the magic of the European ski resorts to America, Sun Valley quickly became a phenomenon, without peer on this continent or any other. Boasting four distinct seasons, each as awe-inspiring as the next, Sun Valley s nearly one million acres of wilderness promise long sunny days, bright starry nights and a resort experience that your family will cherish for generations to come. Wherever you see this icon in the brochure, more information on the subject is available on the indicated page of the SunValley website. 2

The American Shangri-La This area combines more delightful features than any place I have ever seen in the U.S., Switzerland or Austria. That s how Count Felix Schaffgotsch described Sun Valley in 1935 after being hired by Union Pacific to locate the perfect spot for a grand American resort. And while he was the first to feel the area s unique effect, he was not the last. A vast natural playground, Sun Valley lived up to its early nickname: the American Shangri-La. The chairlift was invented here. America s first skiing gold medalists trained on the slopes, and for generations, everyone from European nobility, Hollywood royalty and all-american families have enjoyed the seemingly endless runs and tranquil village. No other place is quite like Sun Valley. Visit the Web for a complete history of the resort, including an interactive historical slide show. 4

3,400 vertical feet. 2,054 skiable acres. Forever runs. You reach the top and your breath catches in your chest. You ve caught excited descriptions of this view from passing conversations in the Lodge, but they couldn t prepare you for the actual experience. Crisp air surges into your lungs once more, this time charged with the scent of pine and possibility. You tighten your grip on your poles and charge down the mountain, whipping up clouds of fresh powder that leave frigid kisses on your face. Renewed by the 3,400 vertical feet, you re struck with a sudden determination to experience every one of Sun Valley s 2,054 acres. Your passion for skiing has just ignited a lifelong romance with Sun Valley s Bald Mountain. 8

Two mountains. Unlimited possibilities. Sun Valley s mountain duo offers something for skiers of all ages and skill levels. Bald Mountain s consistency of pitch, lack of lift lines and variety of terrain have earned it a reputation as one of the world s finest ski mountains. A total of 13 chairlifts and 65 varied runs await skiers on either side of Baldy. Dollar Mountain, the finest teaching mountain in the world, is the perfect place to get acquainted with the thrill of downhill. The mountain features two new high-speed quad lifts, a tubing hill, beginner terrain park and the unique Wundercarpet that effortlessly whisks children of all ages to the top of the run. Carol s Dollar Mountain Lodge is the world-class 26,000-square-foot facility located at the site of the old Dollar Cabin. The two-story lodge incorporates a state of the art children s ski and snowboard center including small-sized restrooms, dryers, television and game area. As always, guests of Sun Valley Resort receive convenient, free ski storage just steps from the lifts. The perfect excuse to unbuckle your boots. The scent of basil and oregano combine with crisp mountain air. You sip a Sun Valley ale and drink in an uninterrupted view of the Wood River Valley and Pioneer Mountains. As your gourmet meal arrives, you sit back and realize: this is only one of Sun Valley s award-winning day lodges. From fine dining and retail shops to breathtaking views and a plethora of cozy fireplaces, Sun Valley s six lodges offer plenty of amenities to tempt weary skiers. Sun Valley s Dollar Mountain Day Lodge, provides an unparalleled winter family vacation experience. The 26,000-square-foot family center incorporates a children s ski and snowboard school and offers equipment rental and repair, ski storage lockers and retail shopping. Midway up Bald Mountain on the River Run side, now accessed by skiers and non-skiers alike, via our new gondola, you ll find the historic Roundhouse. Featuring sit down service around a four-sided fireplace, and a world-class wine list. Buy a "foot traffic" pass and meet your friends for lunch. Open in the winter for lunch only. Reservations recommended. Complete information on Sun Valley s lodges, including menus and hours of operation, is available on the website.

The greatest luxury of all choice. A steamy, secluded soak surrounded by snowcapped pines. A heartpounding trek across perfectly groomed trails. Whether your interest lies in relaxation or exhilaration, you ll find plenty to do (or not do) in Sun Valley. The twinkling lights of the village lure visitors from the mountaintops into quaint shops filled with fine art, jewelry and fashions. For those who can t get enough winter sports there s the Sun Valley Ice Rink as well as our renowned Nordic and Snowshoe Center offering over 25 miles of manicured and marked trails. Located in the backyard of the Sun Valley Lodge, snowshoers and cross country skiers cross glistening meadows and pass through sparkling woods, experiencing a wide variety of classical, skate skiing and ski touring. And best of all, with our new Lift Ticket Exchange Program, a day on the mountain can easily be exchanged for many of Sun Valley s other winter attractions and amenities. For a complete list of winter activities, including locations and costs, and Lift Ticket Exchange Program, visit the Resort Recreation page of the Sun Valley website. 14

How can something so beautiful be so cruel? There is absolute silence as you step up to the tee box. A slight wind from the south rustles your hair, and you move a few inches to compensate. You draw a breath and hold it as you begin your swing. Your club connects solidly with the ball as you exhale. The direction is perfect. The height is impressive, but as the ball sails toward the pin, you realize you didn t account for the creek. Welcome to Trail Creek, Sun Valley s original resort golf course, one of the most challenging and beautiful courses in the nation. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course combines breathtaking scenery with club-snapping challenges on what Golf Digest calls the #1 course in Idaho. The resort now features nine brilliantly challenging new holes at the White Clouds course and a magnificent new clubhouse with indoor golf practice facilities, and an 18-hole putting course outside. And while everyone is welcome, resort guests enjoy reduced rates and preferred tee times. Find complete golf course information, including green fees and instructor rates, on the Sun Valley Website. 17

The night sky overhead and skating s brightest stars within reach. Your heart begins to accelerate as the music swells. Colored lights glitter across the intricate patterns cut into the ice. The sweet mountain air brushes your face, the finest in western cuisine graces your plate and the stars are so close you can reach out and grab them. Welcome to our summer Saturday Night Ice Shows and Buffet. Of course, our events feature the biggest names on the skating circuit. Whether it s Anderson or Burke, you re welcome to work on your tan while perfecting your Toe Loop. For show schedules, history and ticket sales, visit the Sun Valley Website.

Fifteen hours of daily sunshine. One thousand ways to spend them. No matter what your age, Sun Valley s wealth of activities have a way of making you feel like a kid again. Three outdoor heated pools and a shimmering lake let you float the day away. Or, spend the day in the saddle galloping through wildflowers and pine, courtesy of Sun Valley Stables. Of course, no summer stay is complete without a lift ride to the top of Bald Mountain for an adrenaline charged mountain bike ride, or a relaxing picnic accented by the stunning valley view. Plus our new music pavilion brings national-caliber music and entertainment to the area and ensures that you ll never run out of things to do. For a complete listing of all summer activities, including summer lift rates and trail maps, visit the Sun Valley Website. 21

Ordinary accommodations have no place in an extraordinary setting. A blanket spread in front of a flickering fire. Moonlight streaming in through the window, and the anticipated knock on the door. Room Service. Since 1936, the Sun Valley Lodge has welcomed visitors with elegant amenities and old-world charm. But what keeps guests coming back is the congenial smile that greets you no matter where you stay. From cozy cottages to three-bedroom condominiums, you ll find it all in Sun Valley. And the centric arrangement of the Village puts shopping, entertainment and dining just a short stroll from your door.
