VOL. 10 OCTOBER 2018 NO. 4 Wolverines Visit With Cannonball Run Participants A large contingency of Wolverines traveled to Kersten s Harley Davidson dealership near North Judson, Indiana on September 12 to meet the semi-annual Motorcycle Cannonball Run as it traveled accross America from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon. The 2018 Cannonball started with 107 pre-1929 entrants and arrived at Kerstens just 7 bikes short. Wolverines involved in the 2018 event included Ziggy on a 1916 Indian Power Plus, Mike Carson on a 1928 Harley Davidson JDH and Buck Carson on a 1925 Harley Davidson. The 3750 mile ride was broken into 15 stages of about 250 100 still in the hunt at Kersten s miles per day with an absolute mininum of freeway travel. Bikes entered must be capable of 42 miles per hour sustained speed. Some modifacations are allowed for safety reasons such as safety rims, modern magneto, a speedometer and odometer, and a compass. Absolutely no GPS devices of any kind. Riders are given a map of each days route at the morning meeting, with no advanced knowledge of the route except cities to be visited. Wolverine Ziggy was still in the fray at Kersten s, but both Mike and Buck Carson had met with fate early on in the Run with crashes. Mike s bike survived to allow a substitute rider to carry on, but later Mike gave up his seat in the truck and rode a stage with cracked ribs and a broken collar bone. The 2018 Cannonball Run is over. Won by Dean Bordgioni riding a 1914 Harley Davidson single cylinder machine, chugging over 3441 miles of American back roads. This is a a first time win for a single cylinder motorcycle in any Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run. And some not so lucky AMCA MOTTO: RIDE EM - DON T HIDE EM

After spending 6 months closing the Westnedge Avenue store, the Paragon Leather Store is re-emerging at 10210 Shaver Road in Portage. The store hours will be 10am to 6pm Monday thru Friday only. Call 269-323-9483 for details. Gilmore Garage Works Looks to New Project. The Gilmore Garage Works students are in the final throws of polishing off the 1969 BSA B-25 Starfire project. The finished product of the students hard work will make it s way to the Gilmore Car Museum Motorcycle Gallery soon. Next project on the horizon for the student run motorcycle group at the Garage Works is unusual and exciting. A 1957 Mitsubishi Silver Pigeon in nearly complete but terrible condition has been located on the east side of the state and has been approved by the museum staff for go ahead. The Silver Pigeon was an obscure competion for the Vespa, Lambretta, Cushman scooter class bikes, but never reached the popularity of it s brethren. This should prove a challange and eventual source of pride for the students in the Gilmore Garage Works Program. The Silver Pigeon s basic drive is a variable belt drive off the 11.7 cu. in. 4 stroke engine with jackshaft chain drive to the rear wheel. Best of the Best - Brit Style Considered the Rolls Royce of Motorcycles during it s heyday, the Brough Superior motorcycles of the 1930 s maintain their status among collectors today. Outstanding engineering features like leading link front suspension with driver adjustable damping, foot gear shift, plunger rear suspension, contoured saddle bags, and those nickel plated tank sidecovers seperated the Broughs (incidently pronounced Bruff ) from all others on the road. Rumor has it that Jay Leno has 3 in his collection. 1938 Brough Superior

Honda CB400F - The Original Super Sport? When the Honda CB400F was first introduced in 1974 it didn t exactly stir the loins of most riders. Thought to be just a warmed over version of the lackluster CB350F, which actually made 2 less horsepower than the CB350 twin, the proof was in the pudd in when the first customer test rides proved otherwise. A new, lighter valve train, power tuned 4 into 1 exhaust, and an increased displacement to 408cc made the new model worlds more accepted in the small bore performance market. With the new 6 speed gearbox and dry weight of 392 pounds, the 400/four was the delight of the light sport world. On todays vintage market the CB400F still brings smiles to those who enjoy a lightweight ride through the back road twisties and still commands a considerate dollar on the vintage market. For Sale: 1977 Harley Davidson, Runs good, As you see it. Come take a look. $4600 Scott Denny 269-967-5519

To all Wolverines, At the August Wolverine chapter meeting the Wolverine members present voted to replace the annual Wolverine Holiday party with a Fall Picnic Party and ride to avoid possibility of inclement weather preventing maximum attendance as in the past. At the September Chapter meeting, several options were discussed. The final decision by members present is as follows: Event date will be Saturday, October 20, 2018. Those wishing to participate in the ride would meet at the Gun River Inn (formerly Orangeville Tavern) on Marsh Road to join in the 80 th Birthday run for Tom Heide, leaving the Inn at noon sharp. Sausage gravy and biscuits breakfast may be available before the run. Those wishing to participate only in the Fall Picnic Party would congregate at the Gull Lake Inn on M-89 east of Richland to partake in a Wolverine sponsored Left Coast Open Pit ( formerly Q It Up) tri tip barbeque with all the fix ins. Party starts at 4PM with dinner at 5PM. Libations are BYOB and rooms will be available on site by reservation for late partiers. Gull Lake Inn phone is 269-731-4131. The attached flyer will fill in the details. Contact Linda or Mary for any questions and RSVP. Members eat free. $15 charge for guests.

Bucket List Comes True for 107 Year Old Lady Wolverines Scott Denny and Dennis DeHaan were recently instrumental in fullfilling a bucket list wish of 107 year old Viola Coleman at her residence in Kalamazoo. She wanted a motorcycle ride as one of her A List desires, as she had ridden behind her father many years ago. After hearing of her wish, Scott enlisted the help of Dennis, a Wolverine who has a very nice BMW with hack. The event drew a number of Wolverine and residence onlookers as Dennis first took a turn around the parking lot for a confidence check and received the thumbs up for a trip on the city streets. Two local TV stations covered the event and it went viral nationwide on National TV. Fellow AMCA member Mark Bayer of the Santa Fe Trail Chapter has put together a new book covering motorcycle history from 1860. The book is $14.95 postage free from Mark Bayer 9420 N. Ditzler Ave. Kansas City, MO 64157
