Term 4, Week 2 Wednesday 25 October 2017 Kia ora whanau, I have absolutely loved my first week and a half at Waitākiri School. Students, staff and parents have made me feel so welcome! It was a great athletics day yesterday, the weather was most kind to us. I was very impressed by the attitude and effort of all students. They were so positive and supportive of everyone s efforts. I was also impressed with the ability of the top athletes who will go on to represent the school. I would like to thank Kent Burnard and Roanne Riordan for all their effort and organisation, it was a very smoothly run event for the hundreds of students that were involved. Good luck to those who are representing Waitākiri School at the choir festival tonight. I m sure you will have a great time singing with those hundreds of students from other schools. Congratulations for getting involved. I have been amazed at the wide range of activities that are on offer to students during intervals and lunchtime. These range from the creative (drawing, dance, art, crochet) to the physical (biking, jump jam, rugby), to the academic (debating, digi club) and even mechanical (tinkering with tools). There is literally something for everyone! Thank you to the staff for providing these and many more opportunities. It was great to meet so many parents at athletics. Many of you mentioned that you have children going to Chisnallwood Intermediate and that you went there yourself. I would like to remind you that the Chisnallwood 50th anniversary is on this weekend. Please go to their website to register if you are interested. I will be there too as I was a teacher there from 2001-2004. Ngā Mihi Nui Andrew Barker Principal MEET OUR NEW PRINCIPAL ANDREW BARKER Thursday 26 and Friday 27 October 9am In the staffroom All welcome! These lunch wraps are very useful for wrapping sandwiches and food products like a block of cheese or half an avocado. They are really great to have instead of glad wrap. The best thing is that they are reusable so you can use them over and over again! They will be selling for $9 each, 2 for $16 or 3 for $24. A set (1 large, 1 small) $12. SOFT PLASTICS RECYCLING The Love NZ Soft Plastics Programme. keep plastic bags and packaging out of landfill. The enviro team want to support this programme. Bring your supermarket bags, bread bags, frozen food bags, toilet paper packaging, confectionery and biscuit wrap, chip bags, pasta and rice bags, courier envelopes, shopping bags, - basically anything made of plastic which can be scrunched into a ball, to school. Just make sure they are empty, dry and leave them in the Soft Plastics bin by Woody s shed. We will take these to our local supermarket to be recycled. Waitākiri Worm tea is great for your garden. An excellent way to grow healthy, hardy organic plants, promote natural soil balance, and reduce garden pests, is to use Waitākiri Worm tea on your plants and soil. It is for sale again at $2 a bottle.

ENVIRO NEWS contd. Waitākiri s Reusable Coffee Cups $13.00 Plus a free drink from the Choice Café with your purchase. Colgate Oral Waste School Competition Please bring these items and put them in the Colgate box at the office. We will send them to the competition and hopefully we will have the most used oral care products. This competition is an opportunity for our school to win $1,000 or a $200 Mitre 10 vouchers with a recycled plastic park bench. These prizes are given out randomly just like a raffle. Closes at the end of this month!

Waitākiri PTA Market Night Help us make the night a success! If you have any books or toys that you no longer need and would be willing to donate please send them along to the studios Korimako studio for books - Otakaro studio for toys Travis Studio needs clean empty tin cans please. We are collecting them in a large container just outside Travis Studio. It doesn't matter about size as we will recycle the tins we don't need. Children will be decorating cake boxes in their studios and will be bring home their decorated box (one per family) on Friday 3 November. We kindly ask if families can bake some delicious goodies (can be cakes, slices, biscuits, muffins, etc) and send them to school in the cake boxes on Market Day 10 November to be sold at the market. Thank you for your support We will be holding a SILENT AUCTION at school before Market Night outside the CHOICE Room and on the night. The auction will close at 7.50pm on Market Night and the winners will be announced. Look at some of the great prizes on offer so far more to come! We have 25 stall holders booked for the night, plus a large range of food being sold. There will be entertainment by children holding their Talent Quest, bouncy castles, plus much much more! We would love for you and your family/friends to come along and support us. Eftpos will be available on the night. See you there!

REAL COMMUNITY CHALLENGES WOULD YOU LIKE TO COLLECT FOR THE SPCA ANNUAL APPEAL on Saturday 11 November 2017? Dear Students As part of the Waitākiri School Community REAL Challenges, you have the opportunity to collect for the SPCA Canterbury Annual Appeal on Saturday 11 November and tick off a REAL Community Challenge! Or you can do this just because you are a REAL hero and volunteer your time. If you would like to do this, you will be needed to help collect funds at Fresh Choice Parklands or Bunnings Shirley with a parent or caregiver for 1 ½ hours. The parent or caregiver MUST stay with you the whole time. More than one child from each family can help. Everything will be there that you need to complete your collection, so you just need to bring yourself and your parent/caregiver. If you would like to do this, please have this form completed by your parent/caregiver, and return to Kim in the school office as soon as possible. There are only 8 spaces available so first in will get their preferred time. If we have lots of interest we may be able to collect at another venue. Thank you for your help!
