Commodore s Comments How can it possibly be June? This year went by so quickly! Our last meeting, the Officer's Induction, on Sunday May 18th was the end of the current year. There will be a little pause in the summer before the new OSC active sailing year begins in August. For those that didn't make the Officer's Induction event, the day unfolded with beautiful weather. Before the meeting we had a lot of boats on the water. There was some informal racing from Sunset Harbor at Sims' Beach out to the first fish marker past Lemon Point and back. We had good wind and I have no idea who came in what order except that my TomCat came in last of about 6 sailboats and we had loads of fun. At the meeting, there were thank you gifts given to outgoing officers and deserving contributors of services and the passing forward of certain trophies like the "Pat on the Back Award and the "Outstanding Sailor of the Year Award". Read on to get the details from our New Secretary's Report. Which brings me to the introduction of the new officers: Charlene Johnson -Vice Commodore Ross Martin - Secretary Jan Cole Treasurer Ken Renfro - Racing Commodore. Oh, almost forgot, Art Twitchell - Commodore... Wish us luck...i'm delighted to be working with this fine crew! On May 23rd we had our first New Officer's meeting where we reviewed our officer's duties and focused on the calendar for the approaching year. Our endeavors were very productive and we compiled a calendar of events that we can propose to the members in our fall meeting. We wanted to be able to hit the ground running and have an early opportunity to resolve conflicts in scheduling within our club and also with intra-lake-events in order to optimize participation. We also reviewed our budget for the new year to try to anticipate cost allocations. Our Membership Renewal is this month so please send in your dues by mid-june. It will be an important part of our planning for covering costs. Thank you in advance. At our May meeting during old business, Ed Sims gave a brief accounting of the Mug Race. There are some photos that will be in this newsletter. He also passed on an award to Jim Edens for 2nd place in his class for that event. As Ed mentioned, out of 92 participating sailboats, Jim's catamaran For Play was one of 11 boats that finished the complete length of the 38 mile race. Outstanding. The rest of the boats were timed at the earlier demarcation at Shands Bridge since the wind died at 3:30 in the afternoon. Ironically, it rained off and on prior to that time and we actually had robust wind also. And then we became becalmed, stalling most of the fleet. But you will be proud to learn that Ocala Sailing Club had 2 other boats entered in the race which won trophies. PAGE 2
Point Blank with Ed Sims, Paul Straub and Barbara Hancock (placing 1st in their class); and Pivot with Ross Martin and Art Twitchell (placing 3rd in their class). These Intra-Lake-Sailing events are very challenging and a whole lot of fun. I'm am particularly encouraged that our Ocala Sailing Club participation is growing each year. Let's add a few more next year! It is also a great way to join on as crew if you want to get more involved in the competitive spirit of sailing and haven't had the opportunity. Mai & I are off to Colorado for the summer but plan to be back in time for our August kick-off meeting. Ross will be sending out Evites to the Buccaneer's meetings in June and July and also to the 2 kayaking events that we have scheduled for those same 2 months that traditionally have lack-luster wind. Hope you all get a chance to keep in touch and get together out on the water. Enjoy the Newsletter and the summer issues as well. If you have photos during the summer of your activities and trips etc, please send them to Ross for the Newsletter and Website.
