Colorado Rockies (26-22) vs. LOS ANGELES DODGERS (20-27) RHP Chad Bettis (4-1, 3.27) vs. RHP Brock Stewart (0-0, 3.18) Tuesday, May 22, 2018 7:10 p.m. PST Dodger Stadium Los Angeles, CA Game 48 Home Game 23 (8-14) Night Game 34 (13-20) TV: ESPN; SNLA; SNLA Spanish Radio: AM 570 (English); KTNQ 1020 AM (Spanish) START UP ANOTHER ONE: Tonight the Dodgers continue their season long-tying 10-game, 11-day homestand (0-1) with the middle contest of a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies, following last night s frustrating 2-1 loss. Los Angeles is in the midst of playing their division rivals from Denver for the first time this season, despite playing every other NL West foe at least six times. Last year, the Rockies were one of two teams (Arizona) to win the season series vs. L.A., going 9-10 against the National League champions. Following this series, the Boys in Blue will host the Padres for three games this weekend and then take on the Phillies in a four-game series next week. The Dodgers had their four-game winning streak snapped last night, but have still dominated the Rockies in Los Angeles since the Colorado franchise was born in 1993: LAD, Best Home Series Record vs. Any Opponent - Since 1993 (Minimum 5 series played) vs. Pittsburgh Pirates 24-8-0 (.750) vs. Washington Nationals 22-8-2 (.719) vs. Oakland Athletics 3-1-2 (.667) vs. Colorado Rockies 40-19-8 (.657) vs. Milwaukee Brewers 13-7-2 (.636) SOURCE: STATS, LLC The Rockies did go 5-4 against the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine last season, including a four-game sweep at Dodger Stadium last September. Colorado has now won five consecutive games in the series. STAYING POSITIVE: The Dodgers have a run differential of +11 on the season, which is the best in the National League West. In the history of the franchise, the Dodgers have had positive run differential combined with a losing record through May just five times: LAD, Positive Run Diff. w/ Losing Record Thru May All-Time Year Rec Diff 1964 21-23 +15 (160-145) 2008 27-28 +12 (248-236) 2018 20-27 +11 (202-191) 1896 16-18 +4 (219-215) 1992 22-23 +3 (165-162) 1939 17-18 +1 (162-161) SOURCE: STATS, LLC STAY HOT MATTY: Dodger outfielder Matt Kemp continued his torrid hitting last night, going 2-for-4 with a double. Kemp is hitting.455 (15-for-33) with runners in scoring position, which is the second best mark in the Majors, trailing just the Orioles Manny Machado (.472, 17- for-36). Kemp s.429 average (24-for-56) with runners on base leads the Major Leagues, just ahead of the Phillies Odubel Herrera (.423). On the year, Kemp is posting a.326/.364/.518 slashline with 14 runs, 12 doubles, five home runs and 20 RBI in 45 games in his return to the Dodger organization. He currently ranks third in the National League (8 th, MLB) in batting average, while his.882 OPS ranks 14 th on the Senior Circuit. Kemp is the only current Dodger with a home run off Rockies starter Chad Bettis, but Justin Turner (8-for-15, 2 2B, 5 RBI), Yasiel Puig (4-for-11, 2B, 3 RBI) and Yasmani Grandal (5- for-14) have all enjoyed success against the right-hander. MUNCY MASH: Dodger infielder/outfielder Max Muncy went 1-for- 2 with two walks last night and clubbed his fifth homer of the season, a solo blast in the fourth inning. In his last 11 games since May 10, Muncy has gone 10-for-29 (.345) with four doubles, three homers and 10 RBI along with a 1.253 OPS. Muncy s OPS since May 10 ranks second in the National League, trailing only Chicago s Ian Happ (1.385). Muncy is hitting.368 (7-for-19) with a homer, four doubles and 11 RBI with runners in scoring position while batting.310 (9-for-29) with runners on base. Muncy is averaging a home run every 14.2 at-bats, which ranks sixth in the National League among players with at least 75 plate appearances. Muncy trails Matt Adams (10.6), Bryce Harper (11.14), Christian Villanueva (11.25), AJ. Pollock (13.64) and Charlie Blackmon (13.67). MATCHUP vs. Rockies Dodgers: 4 th, NL West (5.5 GB) Rockies: 1 st, NL West (0.5 GA) All-Time vs. Rockies: LA leads series, 238-179 (128-79 at Dodger Stadium) 2017: LA lost series, 9-10, (4-5 at Dodger Stadium) 2018: LA trails series, 0-1 (0-1 at Dodger Stadium) May 21 at LA: L, 1-2 W: Marquez L: Baez S: Davis THE RIGHT STEW: Prior to the game, the Dodgers recalled righthanded pitcher Brock Stewart, who will make his fourth appearance of the season and first start of 2018 this evening. Tonight will mark Stewart s fourth stint with the Dodgers this year after allowing two runs over 5.2 innings and striking out five in three relief appearances (April 30, May 6 and May 11). In five starts with Triple-A Oklahoma City this season, Stewart, 26, is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA (5 ER/21.2 IP) and has held hitters to a.208 average. Stewart has made four appearances vs. the Rockies in his career, including one start on Aug. 3, 2016, the second outing of his career (4.0 IP, 10 H, 9 ER, 4 HR). In 2.1 innings of relief over three appearances against the Rockies, Stewart has allowed four hits and two runs. In order to make room on the active roster, the Dodgers optioned ambidextrous pitcher Pat Venditte to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Venditte has allowed two runs in 2.2 innings (6.75 ERA) and struck out two without issuing a walk in three relief appearances with Los Angeles this season. Dodger pitching has been stellar the last five games since May 17, posting a 1.60 ERA (8 ER/45.0 IP), limiting hitters to a.135 average (21-for-155) and striking out 46. In that time, just the Cubs (1.46) and Mets (1.50) have better earned run averages. BACK IN THE RED ZONE: Dodger third baseman Justin Turner returned to the lineup last Tuesday in Miami and thus far is hitting.280 (7-for-25) with two doubles and five RBI. Turner, who missed the first 40 games of the season with a fractured right wrist, is a career.363 (78- for-215) hitter against the Rockies and that.363 mark is his second highest against any opponent (Miami,.364). His batting average against Colorado also ranks fourth among players with at least 200 career atbats vs. the Rox: Highest Batting AVG vs. Rockies All-Time (Minimum 200 PA) Tony Gwynn.379 Jeff Conine.375 Hal Morris.368 Justin Turner.363 (78-for-215) Juan Pierre.362 SOURCE: STATS, LLC THE COREY STORY: This evening is Corey Seager Bobblehead Night presented by Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf at Dodger Stadium and the first 40,000 fans ticketed fans in attendance will receive the third Seager bobblehead, following his bobblehead nights in 2016 and 2017. Seager is currently on the 60-day disabled list and will miss the rest of the season after having Tommy John surgery on his right elbow performed by Dr. Neal Elattrache at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute on May 4 in Los Angeles. This homestand is jam-packed with great giveaway nights, including the Seager and Cody Bellinger caricature t-shirt presented by San Mauel Casino this Saturday night vs. San Diego, a Jr. Dodgers Fidget Spinner presented by Hi-Chew on Sunday and a Chris Taylor bobblehead presented by Pirelli on Wednesday, May 30. IN A PINCH: The Dodger bench has proven to be very resourceful for Dodger manager Dave Roberts as the club currently leads the Majors with 25 hits by a pinch-hitter and ranks among the National League leaders in pinch-hit average (.269, 3 rd ), RBI (14, T-1st), OBP (.376, 2 nd ) and OPS (.742, 3 rd ). Chase Utley has been very reliable when being called upon off the bench, as he has recorded seven hits as a pinch-hitter this season, which is tied for the second most in the big leagues with the Phillies Nick Williams and trailing just the Cubs Tommy La Stella for the lead (9). His.538 batting average (7- for-13) as a pinch-hitter ranks fifth in the Majors, while his five RBI is the fourth most in the big leagues.
