November 2017 JULIE S JIVE Our Fall Banquet on Friday the 13th went very well, considering the date. After a great dinner served by The Woods, we all raised our glass in remembrance of Dick Wortiska. The $250 we donated to Dick s Memorial Fund is going to purchase a bench on the Mountain Bay State Trail. We are not sure where it will be placed at this time, but hopefully near Donny Steffens s bench. In this newsletter, you will find a couple of pictures of the banquet room to show the pretty decorations Danice Herald, our Historian, set up. One of the pictures shows the awards that we received from Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council-- for 2 years in a row we won for our Newsletter and Website. The Warren Miller Film, Line of Descent, shown on October 19th was quite exciting with all the extreme skiers shown on the big screen. Deb Bramschreiber and I manned a table to hand out business cards and brochures to bring in new members. By the way, some of you may have seen Deb on Channel 5 Live with Lisa Malak promoting both our clubs this past month. A New Fall Fashion Selection of Gelande gear is now available! The form can be found in this newsletter and on the website. If you would like to pick up your new item at one of the Board meetings Gelandesprung Gazette Going Downhill since 1969! www.gelandesprung.org P.O. Box 10422, Green Bay, WI 54307-0422 or at the Pre-trip meetings, fill out the form and send it to our PO Box by November 10th. It takes Always in Stitches (our G gear vendor) about 2 weeks to produce the item. By submitting the form to the Gelandesprung Ski Club PO Box, the items will be ready for pick up at the December 12th Board meeting. Two other options are available for purchasing items: If you would like the item shipped to you, add an additional $15. You can also go directly to the Always in Stitches website and order directly from them. We also have a link to their website: Gelandesprung.org/ Member Resources/Official Club Gear. Thank you to Scott & Jeanne Stilp, as well as Cindy Rendall, for their ideas!! The Board would like to do this twice a year, at each banquet, therefore the form will not be in the newsletter/website each month. Watch for the Spring Fashion Selection next year! Parking will now be available for all of our trips in 2 places. The Bar in Appleton and at The Woods in Green Bay (where we hold our Banquets and Board meetings). We are in need of a trip leader for our Mont Ripley/Mount Bohemia mid-west trip. If you are interested, take a look at the website, Gelandesprung.org, under Member Resources. There is a comprehensive Trip Leader Guide Inside this issue: Julie's Jive... 1 Upcoming Events.............. 2 Helpful Tips................... 2 Sun Peaks Ski Trip............. 5 Sun Peaks Sign Up Form........ 6 Mt Ripley/Mt Bohemia Ski Trip.... 7 2017/18 Membership/Waiver Form.................... 8 Sly Fox Ski Trip List... 9 Keystone Signup Form......... 10 Aspen Signup Form... 11 Big Snow I & II Signup Form... 12 Gelande Gear... 13 Gelande Gear Order Form...14-15 Advertisements............... 16 Board/Chair Members... 17 November Birthdays........... 17 that gives a great overview of what is involved. Our next Board meeting will be held on November 14th at The Woods at 6pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. The Woods has a great menu that many of us partake of while attending the meeting.

Lessons If you have a good level of skiing knowledge, there may be no need for lessons. However, if you have only been skiing a few times before, or not at all, then booking lessons to build your confidence and teach you the various do s and don ts of skiing safety can be beneficial. 2. Ski Safety Equipment: Clothing & Protection The best way to stay safe during any slips or tumbles is to make sure you have the appropriate clothing and protective gear. Essential items for a safe time on the slopes: Ski jacket The thicker the better, this will soften the impact of any falls. Helmets These are very useful for obvious reasons, particularly for advanced skiers who take more risks. Sun Visors It s very bright on the slopes so protective eyewear is absolutely essential. Pads Knee impacts are among the most common that occur whilst skiing and can help prevent injury or bruising. 3. Play it Safe One of the best ways to keep safe is to stick to safer and less dramatic slopes. Although big runs are fun, they are also more likely to result in an injury. 4. Skiing Etiquette & Codes of Conduct There are numerous ways to be careful, but the most important is to be respectful of other skiers. Bear the following in mind: Overtaking Always leave plenty of space and make sure that you can be clearly seen. Signs Following the instructions of signage is very important. Stopping It s important to only stop on the side of the slope or somewhere you are clearly visible. Boundaries Stick to boundaries, they are clearly delineated and marked out to keep skiers safe. Respect Be respectful of other skiers and don t do anything silly, it s their right to enjoy themselves safely. 5. Rest & Recovery Skiing can be stressful on your body, particularly your legs and knees. It s important to recognise when you ve had enough, and let your body recover.

Phillip L. Andreas, age 80, of Green Bay, passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 20, 1937, in Manistee, MI to the late George & Hazelle (Fett) Andreas. Phil met Esther Garrecht at the University of Michigan and they were married on January 30, 1960 in New Jersey. Phil graduated from the University of Michigan with a civil engineering degree. Phil s career brought him to Green Bay in 1962 with his family. Through his work he traveled to Europe, Africa and South America. He was a member of the Green Bay Jaycee s, Sierra Club, Gelandesprung & Venture Ski Clubs, and Lifelong Learning Institute. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until 11:00 am on Friday, November 3, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, 501 Howe Street, Green Bay. In Memory Of Phil Andreas A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am at the church. So sad. Phil and Esther were such a fixture in the club for years. Phil with his short skis and Esther with your cookies. Jenny Lunde What a interesting man. Rick and I were able to sit near him on one of our first ski trips. He shared some interesting stories with us. I m glad we had the chance to get to know him. Awesome life! Sue Huston So happy I had the chance to see Phil several weeks ago and share some time together. Another good soul. Lois DePouw So sad! I was talking to Phil at the banquet and he was planning on skiing this year. Knew Phil for many years as a kind and gentle man. Dan Goudreau I had the distinct pleasure of rooming with Phillip, I believe it was at Boyne about 4 or 5 years ago. A very classy Person and True Gentleman... He will be missed.
