The two teams are tied in the all-time series with each team owning three wins. The Tigers however have had the advantage the last two seasons with back-to-back wins over the Bisons in the series with the last two meetings decided by a total of just four points. The contest will air on the OVC Digital Network with Jose Garcia on the call. Scoring Offense...75.0 Scoring Defense... 76.9 Scoring Margin... -1.9 FG Pct....423 FG Pct. Defense...452 3-pt. Junior guard Garrison Mathews was named the ASUN Conference Player of the Week earlier in the month for his play in the first two games of the season. The Franklin, Tennessee native averaged 31 points per game and hit 53.3 percent of his attempts beyond the arc. He also made 31 trips to the charity stripe, were he sank 22. Mathews enters Saturday s contest as the top scorer in the ASUN averaging 20.3 points per game. That figure ranks the junior 45th nationally overall and 14th among junior guards. With seven games in the books, the Bisons are ranked 65th in RPI. The next closest team in the ASUN is FGCU at 96. After opening the schedule with the first two games at home, the Bisons are in wrapping up a six-game road swing and return to Don Meyer Court on Monday when rival Belmont comes to campus. After trips to Alabama and Texas, the Bisons returned to the Volunteer State for five consecutive games. Lipscomb heads to Belmont, Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State before returning to Allen Arena to host the Bruins. The 5-game run ends at Tennessee on Dec. 9. Eli Pepper grabbed his 500th career rebound earlier in the season at Alabama. He is only the fourth player (Adnan Hodzic, Brandon Brown, Josh Slater, Malcolm Smith) in school history to have reached the plateau in the NCAA era. Mathews led the way against Emory with a 37-point effort, just two points off his NCAA era record for the Bisons. The 37 points were the fourth most of any player in the country on opening night and ties former Lipscomb great Adnan Hodzic for third most in a game in the NCAA era. Lipscomb was predicted to post a second-place finish in the 2017-18 ASUN Conference race by a vote of the league s skippers and the league s media members. Mathews and Rob Marberry were both unanimous selections to the preseason All-ASUN team. The duo was also named All-ASUN by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook. Mathews was also named to the 2017-18 Lou Henson Award Watch List last week becoming the second Lipscomb player to receive the honor. The award is handed out annually to the nation s top mid-major player. The Franklin native was also named an honorable mention mid-major All-American by NBC Sports College Basketball Talk. The Purple and Gold return 81 percent of the offense from last year s squad that was ninth-best in the nation averaging 85.0 points per game. Lipscomb also returns 85 percent of assists from a year ago when the Bisons ranked third in the country with an 18.2 per game average. Lipscomb finished the 2016-17 ranked sixth in the nation for 3-pt FG made. Mathews and senior Nathan Moran were a big reason for that effort as the duo combined for 179 trifectas. That figure ranks third in the nation among returners this season trailing Montana State (190) and Campbell (185). Sign em up Lipscomb inked three high school standouts on Nov. 9th when Alex Jones (Alpharetta, Georgia), Jaxson Strates (Orlando, Florida) and Jake Wolfe (Aurora, Illinois) signed their National Letters of Intent. 15 Straight in the Paint Marberry notched an NCAA era record for the Bisons at Belmont last season by going a perfect 11-for-11 from the field. The feat broke the previous mark of 8-for-8 by Michael Teller in 2008 against USC Upstate and is the best by any player against Belmont in the NCAA era. His streak eventually reached 15 straight buckets before he missed his second shot against TSU. Music City Flare Nearly half of the roster is from the Nashville metropolitan area. six players (Rob Marberry - Nashville, Nathan Moran - Franklin, Asa Duvall - Brentwood, John Matt Merritt - Nashville, Kenny Cooper - Nashville, Garrison Mathews - Franklin, Andrew Fleming - Nashville) call the Music City home. Under the Bright Lights As part of the partnership that began in 2012-13 between the Atlantic Sun Conference and ESPN, the Bisons are set to be featured on ESPN3 for all 14 regular-season home games from Allen Arena. The broadcast originates directly from the Lipscomb campus thanks to a significant investment from the University and a grant from the conference. 10 Under-the-radar rivalries in men s college basketball. The Battle was listed at No. 4 on the list. Let s Score 4000+ points The top two all-time leading scorers in college basketball history (NCAA or NAIA) belong to the Lipscomb Bisons. The NCAA record for career points is held by LSU s Pistol Pete Maravich, who totaled 3,667 points. NAIA Powerhouse From 1988-2001, Lipscomb won more basketball games than any other college or university in the nation, posting an amazing 356 wins and only 56 losses. Prior to the impressive streak, Lipscomb won the 1986 NAIA national championship. The Bisons averaged more than 32 wins per year and, in 1990, set a national record by winning 41 games. Lipscomb finished in the NAIA Top 20 for 13 straight seasons, including seven top-five finishes in the last 10 years in the NAIA. S or No S The most commonly accepted plural of bison is bison, but at Lipscomb we are the Bisons. The unabridged Oxford English dictionary includes Bisons as a proper usage. History Lesson Lipscomb University was established in 1891 by David Lipscomb and James A. Harding as the Nashville Bible School. Nearly 30 years later, the school was renamed David Lipscomb College after Lipscomb passed away. In 1988, Lipscomb became known as David Lipscomb University, but, in 1994, the David was legally dropped. Lipscomb is affiliated with the Churches of Christ. We Battle The Battle of the Boulevard is an annual rivalry against Belmont University, located less than three miles from each other down Belmont Boulevard. Since Dec. 11, 1953, the two schools have faced off 137 times with Lipscomb leading the series 73-64. Despite being in separate conferences, the two schools will play each other twice this season. Head Coach Casey Alexander Casey Alexander was named the 18th head coach of the Lipscomb University program in May 2013 taking over the team following a two-year stint as head coach at Stetson University. Under Alexander s direction the Lipscomb program has trended upward including the 2016-17 season that saw a record-setting offensive output for the second-straight season and the first 20-win season in over a decade. The Bisons put fresh ink all over the record book including an average of 84.97 points per game over five points higher than the previous mark. The squad also posted a record 10.3, 3-point field goals per outing setting a new school mark, leading the ASUN and ranking sixth in the nation. The team also finished among the nation s best in assists finishing behind only UCLA (21.4 apg) and Purdue (18.3) with a 18.3 assists per game mark, the best in school history. The offense helped lead the Bisons to an 11-3 mark in league action for a.786 winning percentage, the best in school history. Included in those 11 league wins was a win over Jacksonville that saw Lipscomb post 112 points against the Dolphins in a regulation game marking the highest point total against an NCAA Division I opponent in school history and the most in an ASUN game since 2007. Then sophomore Garrison Mathews led the way in that win setting the NCAA era scoring record with a 39-point effort against Jacksonville. Mathews would go on to finish third in the league in scoring with a 20.4 points per game average and would become just the second Bison to earn NABC First-Team All-District honors as well as being named a unanimous All-ASUN first-team selection by the league coaches. Mathews would be joined on the All- ASUN team by fellow sophomore Rob Marberry, who garnered second-team honors. The offensive revolution began to take hold in the 2015-16 season for Alexander s Bisons squad as the team set new marks for points in a season (2,590) and 3-pointers (331) that would be short lived. The season would see J.C. Hampton earn second-team, all-league honors, while Mathews and Eli Pepper would be named to the ASUN All-Freshman team. Alexander finished his first season at the helm with the Bisons posting a 10-8 record in ASUN Conference play. The team rebounded from an 0-4 start to league action to win 10-of-14 to finish the regular season in a 3-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings. Overall, Lipscomb finished 15-15 on the year and averaged 75.9 points per game, a figure that ranked third in the ASUN. The Bisons led the league in three pointers making 9.2 per outing. A big part of the success of the 2013-14 team came from freshman duo J.C. Hampton and Josh Williams, who each earned ASUN All-Freshman honors for their play on the court as rookies. Alexander s second squad of his tenure in 2014-15 finished 14-17 overall and 7-7 in ASUN Play. That record would see the Bisons tie for fourth in the standings but have to make a trip to Northern Kentucky in the opening round of the playoffs where Lipscomb would notch a 76-73 overtime win over the Norse. That win marked the first postseason victory for the Purple and Gold since 2010. Williams would finish second in the league in scoring and earn first-team All-ASUN honors for his play. Before joining the Bisons in 2013, Alexander led Stetson to a third-place finish in the ASUN standings. Stetson s 11-7 finish in league play marked only the second time in the last decade that the Hatters finished third or higher in the conference standings. A trademark of Alexander s coaching philosophy is recruiting players who are committed to playing hard and playing as a team. We work hard to find the right players and coaches on the front end. When you get this type of player, you can accomplish great things. In 2012-13 at Stetson, the Hatters ranked among the nation s best in sharing the ball as Alexander s squad ranked eighth nationally averaging 16.2 assists per game. Stetson also ranked second in the A-Sun in scoring averaging 70.3 points per game finishing just behind the high-octane Florida Gulf Coast offense in the scoring race. The Hatters also ranked second in the conference in field goal percentage (.456), three point field goal percentage (.329) and free throw percentage (.705). Under Alexander s direction Adam Pegg earned 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Men s Basketball Scholar- Athlete of the Year for his play on the court and his work in the classroom. The center was also named All- ASUN first-team after finishing as the only player in the league to finish in the top 10 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage. Prior to taking his first head coaching role at Stetson, Alexander spent 16 years on the bench with Belmont head coach Rick Byrd. Casey played and coached for me and I can say that he is as competitive as any player I ve ever coached, said Byrd, head coach of the Belmont University men s basketball team. He is a great leader. He was born to coach and is an outstanding teacher of the game. During that span, the Bruins captured four Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Championships, made four trips to the NCAA Tournament and one NIT appearance. While still at Belmont, Alexander was named the No. 5 Mid-Major Assistant Coach by national college basketball Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports. Belmont will always be an important part of my life, Alexander said. I value that experience and the people who are there. The things that I love about that part of my life are what attract me to Lipscomb. It s what allows me to jump in with both feet and to be ready to go. Before putting on the suit and tie on the sidelines, Alexander was a standout player for Belmont ( 92-95) leading the Bruins to a 119-25 record during his playing career. He established himself among the career leaders in a number of categories and was inducted into the Belmont Hall of Fame in 2005. A three-sport standout in high school, Alexander helped lead Brentwood Academy to a pair of state titles. Alexander and his wife, the former Sunni Dixon, have three children, Allie, 18; Reed, 15; and Mason, 12.
