Juniors Aaron Craft and Deshaun Thomas also were selected as first team all-conference selections at the annual league media day in Chicago Oct. 25. BUCKEYES LOOK TO EXTEND TITLE STREAK Thad Matta s Buckeyes earned their third-consecutive Big Ten regular-season title in 2011-12 when William Buford s late-game heroics at Michigan State helped clinch a share of the crown in East Lansing. Not since Fred Taylor s teams in the 1960s had Ohio State won three-consecutive Big Ten championships. The 2012-13 Buckeyes are vying for their fourth title in as many years, edging closer to the Big Ten record of five championships in succession accomplished from 1960-64 by Taylor s troops. YOUNG AGAIN Ohio State advanced to the 2012 Final Four with just one senior, William Buford, on the roster. The 2012-13 team also features one player in the final year of eligibility, Evan Ravenel, a reserve a season ago. A bevy of freshmen dotted the Ohio State bench during Ohio State s run to the Final Four last year. This year the lone rookie, Amedeo Della Valle, will have five experienced sophomores, three juniors and Ravenel on hand to offer advice. SPOTS OPEN Juniors Aaron Craft, Lenzelle Smith Jr. and Deshaun Thomas are returning starters with lineup staples William Buford (eligibility) and Jared Sullinger (NBA-Celtics) gone from the program. Thad Matta has several options to fill the void with six underclassmen and senior Evan Ravenel vying for opportunities. Sophomores Amir Williams and Trey McDonald, along with Ravenel, battle for minutes in the paint. Sophomores Shannon Scott, Sam Thompson and LaQuinton Ross complete at guard along with freshman shooter Amedeo Della Valle, an import from Italy via Findlay (Nev.) Prep. WALKONS ADDED TO ROSTER Andrew Goldstein and Jake Lorbach were added to the 2012-13 roster Oct. 22 as walk-on members of the squad. Goldstein, a junior guard, played prep basketball at Marlboro (N.J.) High School. Lorbach played in Ohio at St. Edward High School. Goldstein played a season of junior college basketball at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, N.J., before transferring to Ohio State. Lorbach played both basketball and volleyball in high school, winning the Ohio High School Boys Volleyball state title as a senior. Goldstein will sit out the 2012-13 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules. He will have two years of eligibility starting with the 2013-14 season. DEFENSE ON DISPLAY Aaron Craft, the reigning Big Ten defensive player of the year, spearheads the Ohio State defensive efforts but he will have plenty of help this season from his backcourt brethren and his teammates in the paint. Lenzelle Smith Jr. and Craft make up one of the best defensive backcourts in college basketball. Add to that the shot-blocking prowess of 6-11 sophomore Amir Williams, leaper Sam Thompson and the ever-improving Deshaun Thomas and the Buckeyes have all the ingredients in place to challenge opposing offenses. In just two seasons, Craft has amassed 171 career steals, already No. 2 all-time at Ohio State. As a team, Ohio State held opponents under 40 percent shooting 20 times last season. 2012-13 SCHEDULE NOTES Ohio State will play at Duke in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Nov. 28 at Cameron Indoor Stadium in a rematch of the 2011 Challenge game played in Columbus, a win for the Buckeyes. The Carrier Classic, in its second year, featured both the Ohio State men s and women s basketball teams. The games were scheduled to be played on the USS Yorktown, a museum ship at the Patriots Point historical complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., in Charleston Harbor. The men s game vs. Marquette was cancelled because of condensation on the court at gametime. The Ohio State women fell to Notre Dame. Ohio State also took part in the 2012 Basketball Tip-Off Classic. Games were played both in Columbus and at the Mohegan Sun Arena (Nov. 17-18) in Uncasville, Conn. Ohio State defeated Rhode Island and Washington in Connecticut. Also in non-conference play, Kansas will travel to Ohio State Dec. 22 in a rematch of the 2012 Final Four matchup with the Buckeyes in New Orleans. In Big Ten play, Ohio State will play seven teams twice in home-andhome competition and four teams once. Iowa and Minnesota travel to Columbus this year in singlegame play. The Buckeyes travel to Penn State and Purdue. MATTA EXTENDS STREAK VS. NON-CONFERENCE FOES Thad Matta has directed Ohio State to at least 10 wins during non-conference play in each of his eight seasons in Columbus. Matta is 111-20 vs. non-conference competition at Ohio State and 113-45 vs. Big Ten foes (regular season and Big Ten tournament games) for an overall record of 224-65. In 13 seasons as a head coach (1 at Butler, 3 at Xavier and 9 at Ohio State) Matta is 117-47 vs. the Big Ten. He has winning records vs. nine league teams (ILL (11-4), IND (10-6), IOWA (10-4), MICH (16-3), MINN (9-5), NW (13-1), PSU (16-0), PUR (13-6) and NEB (2-0). Junior Deshaun Thomas is the top returning scorer at 15.9 points a game. Aaron Craft, also a junior, added 8.8 points a game. In all, the Buckeyes return 53 percent of the offense (1,552 of 2,913 pts.), 59 percent of the rebounds (846 of 1,440), 70 percent of the team s assists (396 of 568) and 63 percent of its steals (188 of 281). ROGERS EARNS SCHOLARSHIP Alex Rogers, a junior who transferred to Ohio State following the 2010-11 season from Christian Brothers University in Memphis, was awarded an athletics scholarship in August 2012. Rogers sat out while practicing with the Buckeyes in 2011-12 but was not eligible to play per NCAA transfer rules. He has two years of eligibility at Ohio State. Before arriving at Ohio State, Rogers, a Cincinnati, Ohio, native, started 34 of 35 career games at CBU. He averaged 4.3 points and 2.5 rebounds with a career total of 94 assists. MATTA CONTINUES TO BUILD IMPRESSIVE OHIO STATE RESUME Thad Matta has accomplished a remarkable list of accomplishments in eight years as head coach of the Buckeyes. The 2012-13 season should be no different. Matta s teams have never failed to win 20 games, a record streak in Ohio State history. In fact, Matta has never failed to reach the 20-win plateau in 12 years as a head coach. Ohio State has reached 30 or more wins three times, all with Matta at the helm. Back-to-back seasons with 30 wins in 2010-11 (34) and 31 in 2011-12 only trail the 35 wins recorded in 2006-07, the Ohio State record for single-season victories. In addition, Matta has won five Big Ten titles, including the last three, three Big Ten postseason tournament crowns, in six title game opportunities, six NCAA tournament appearances, including three consecutive runs to the Sweet 16, a pair of Final Four trips (2007, 2011) and a title game appearance in 2007. Throw in a National Invitation Tournament title in 2009 and Matta has guide the Buckeyes to postseason play in seven-consecutive attempts and in ever year in which Ohio State was eligible. ANOTHER CRAFT ADDED TO BASKETBALL ROSTER Another member of the Craft family is playing basketball for the Buckeyes this season. Cait Craft signed on with the Buckeyes last November and is a freshman this season with the Ohio State women s team. Aaron Craft is a junior on the men s team. The Craft siblings are the second brother-sister duo to play for the Buckeyes while Thad Matta and Foster have led the basketball programs. P.J. Hill (2008-09) of the men s team and Tayler Hill, currently a senior on the women s team, were the first siblings to represent the Buckeyes under Matta and Foster. There currently are five brother-sister tandems playing Division I basketball. BUCKEYES ENJOYED RECORD SEASON Ohio State s 31-8 overall record in 2011-12 was the third best in Ohio State history in terms of wins behind the 35 victories recorded in 2006-07 and the 34 victories recorded in 2010-11. Thad Matta teams have never failed to win at least 20 games and his teams own five of the Top 6 win totals for a season at Ohio State. Matta owns all three Ohio State seasons with 30 or more wins. The 65 wins over the 2010-11 and 2011-12 campaigns tied a Big Ten record for most wins in consecutive seasons. WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT THE BUCKEYES... Defensively, I think Ohio State has the best backcourt in the America in Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith, Dick Vitale, ESPN Deshaun Thomas takes the spotlight as Thad Matta has enough talent to contend for a national title. Dick Vitale, ESPN No Sully or Buford, but Aaron Craft returns with his burning cheek rectangles of doom. Odds D. Thomas drops 40 on someone? #veryhigh. Andy Glockner, SI.com The Buckeyes will be smaller, quicker and deeper than they ve been the last two years. They may not have a surefi re pro on their roster, but they have a lot of nice pieces that fi t well together. So if we re looking for a mantra, we should take our cue from the head coach: No frills? No problem. Seth Davis, Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports AARON CRAFT This kid is the poster child for college athletics. He plays with great toughness and verve, and he is a natural winner. Seth Davis, Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports Is there a tougher kid in college hoops than Craft? A more driven student? A more impressive all-around player? Eamonn Brennan, ESPN.com The consummate point guard, the Buckeyes junior is arguably the best perimeter defender in the country. He provides leadership, makes his teammates better -- and will need to become more assertive on the offensive end. Jeff Goodman, CBSSports.com Not to be overly cliché, but Craft is a coach on the fl oor that understands what each member of his team is supposed to be doing and can get the ball where it needs to be and when it needs to be there. It sounds simple, but it is a vital skill to have. Rob Dauster, NBCSports.com It s simple. Craft, the Big Ten s reigning defensive player of the year, is America s best on-theball defender. Save the arguments. Myron Medcalf, ESPN.com Could be the best perimeter defender in the nation. Craft is Prototypical Loveable Scrappy College Basketball Player. Matt Norlander, CBSSports.com Aaron Craft Craft s ability to contain penetration against even elite playmakers is the best we ve seen from a guard in the past decade. Mike De- Courcy, Sporting News Whatever beat it is that Craft marches to, I wish the rest of us could hear it. We d all be at least 60 percent more productive, I guarantee you that. Eamonn Brennan, ESPN.com DESHAUN THOMAS With Jared Sullinger and William Buford gone, the focal point of the Buckeyes offense will be Thomas. The lefty is an impossible matchup, given his ability to overpower defenders and fi nish at the rim. Jeff Borzello, CBSSports. com It s going to be thrilling to see Thomas -- a born scorer if ever there was one -- fully unleashed. Eamonn Brennan, ESPN.com Thomas was arguably Ohio State s best player down the stretch last season. He should post big numbers and could lead the Big Ten in scoring. Gary Parrish, CBSSports.com Thomas gives defenders nightmares and when he gets on a roll, he can rattle off points from all three areas of the floor. Reggie Rankin, ESPN.com Thank you, Deshaun Thomas, for staying in school so we can enjoy a season of you as the Buckeyes unrestricted No. 1 scoring option, Luke Winn, SI.com Thomas is simply wired to score. The lefty is an impossible matchup because of his ability to score from the perimeter, off the dribble or in the paint. Jeff Borzello, CBSSports.com SHANNON SCOTT Scott is a prime candidate for my annual earlyseason list of sophomores on the rise. Seth Davis, Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports SAM THOMPSON Sam Thompson is crazy athletic, and has the potential to be one of the best above-the-rim finishers in college hoops. Eamonn Brennan, ESPN.com LAQUINTON ROSS He s long and skilled and may have as much upside as anyone on the Buckeyes. Jeff Goodman, CBSSports.com Ross is smooth and athletic, and he has a real pretty stroke for a guy his size. If the proverbial light ever goes on for him, he s gonna shine mighty bright. Game 1 No. 4 Ohio State 82, Albany 60 Nov. 11, 2012, Columbus COLUMBUS-Deshaun Thomas scored 13 of his 19 points in a 17-2 run to end the half, leading No. 4 Ohio State to an 82-60 victory over Albany in the Buckeyes belated season opener. They were supposed to play on Friday night against Marquette in Charleston, S.C., aboard the USS Yorktown but condensation on the court led to that game being canceled. Thomas, one of the stars of the Buckeyes Final Four run last season, hit just one of his first six shots and Ohio State trailed 23-22 late in half. But he asserted himself as the Buckeyes took control. Aaron Craft had a career-high 20 points to lead the Buckeyes with Lenzelle Smith Jr. adding 18 and LaQuinton Ross 10. Mike Black had 20 and Jacob Iati 13 for Albany. Craft hit 5 of 7 3-pointers to go with seven assists. His previous highest scoring total was 19. Smith was 8 of 11 from the field, making both 3s he attempted. The Buckeyes shot 57 percent from the field (32 of 56) and made 12 of 20 shots behind the arc. Smith gave Ohio State a 39-25 lead at the halftime buzzer by swishing a 3-pointer from the right wing off an assist pass from Craft. Over the last 4:46 of the half during the Ohio State run, the Buckeyes hit 6 of 8 shots from the field to Albany s 0 for 4, didn t have a turnover and outrebounded the Great Danes 6-2. Ohio State then opened the second half by scoring eight of the first 10 points to open up a 20-point lead. Craft and Ross hit 3s to make it 55-33. The lead hovered around 20 the rest of the game. Thomas scored 11 of his team s first 13 points, showing off his versatility by hitting a 3-pointer, two jumpers, a layup and a hook shot. He hit his first nine shots. This was his 14th game with 20 or more points at Ohio State. He also scored 31 last season against Loyola (Maryland). Thomas was 3 of 7 from 3-point range, and came into the game having made seven of his 15 3-point shots. Washington stayed in the game in the first half by shooting 52 percent from the floor, led by Scott Suggs who had eight of his 11 at intermission. But the Huskies were outrebounded 34-28 and had 13 turnovers. Notes: Ohio State owns a 4-8 record vs. Washington. To begin the series, Washington won the first five games, including four at Washington and the fifth in Columbus in 1947. The teams had not met since 1972, a 67-63 loss for the Buckeyes, who were ranked No. 10 against the unranked Huskies. The last time the teams met on a neutral court was Dec. 27, 1961 when the No. 1 ranked Buckeyes downed the unranked Huskies 59-49 at the L.A. Holiday Classic in California. The matchup was the third of four in the 2013 Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic for the Buckeyes. Against teams currently representing the Pacific 12 Conference, Ohio State is 37-36. Ohio State forced 13 Washington turnovers, while the Buckeyes only had seven. The Buckeyes outrebounded the Huskies 30-24 overall and 12-6 on the offensive glass. For the second-consecutive game Ohio State had three players reach double figures in scoring: Deshaun Thomas (31 points); Aaron Craft (18); and Evan Ravenel (12). Against non-conference opponents, Matta has amassed a record of 111-20 during his tenure in Columbus. His teams have never failed to win at least 10 non-big Ten games over the last eight seasons. Matta owns a 3-3 record vs. the Pac-12. He is 2-0 vs. California, 0-2 vs. Arizona and 0-1 vs. Stanford. The game is the first time a Matta coached team has competed against the Huskies, improving his record to 1-0. Deshaun Thomas tied a career-high with 31 points against Washington. Previously he recorded the same total vs. Loyola Md (3/15/12).
