Faceoff is 7:05 p.m. UConn is a member of the Atlantic Hockey Association. The Dutchmen sport one of the best power play units in college hockey. Union s nine power play goal total is tops in the country, and the team s 31.0 percent success rate (9-for-29) ranks fourth-best in the land. Senior F Kevin Sullivan leads the country in assists (8), averaging 2.0 helpers per game. Sullivan has nearly matched his assist total from last season (10), after recording seven assists as a sophomore and eight his freshman campaign. Sullivan posted a career-best three assists in a game against Lake Superior State (Oct. 18). I think Kevin is playing with more confidence, says head coach Rick Bennett. He worked hard on his skating over the summer and the improvement in his game shows. Freshman Michael Pontarelli has adjusted quickly to the college game. Pontarelli ranks as the second-highest rookie scorer in the nation, averaging 1.75 points per game while his four power play goals in four games (1.0 average) leads all NCAA players. Union players will participate in the Helping Hands community service project on Saturday (Oct. 26). Team members will collect and dispose of litter on a designated street adjacent to campus, starting at Noon. The campus and the community have supported us and made us feel welcomed and we want to give back, says captain Mat Bodie. Last week Union suffered a pair of one-goal losses to Lake Superior State (5-6 OT, 2-3) at (Oct. 18-19), marking the first time in over two years that the Dutchmen had been swept at home. Union led four times in the series opener, only to lose in overtime. The next night, Coach Bennett s squad fired 48 shots on net, but couldn t find the equalizer.
STREAKS & milestones u Coach Rick Bennett s next win will be the 50th for his career. u Daniel Carr needs one goal to equal the school s all-time Division I record held by Mario Valey-Trabucco (2006-10). u Mat Bodie is four assists shy of tying Jason Walters (2006-10) for fourth place in Division I career assists at Union. UNION NOTEBOOK Union s goal-scoring this season has been dispersed among nine players... Junior G Dillon Pieri made his second career appearance in a Union sweater on Saturday and stopped all six shots faced... After occuping a spot in the national rankings for seven weeks (dating to last season), Union fell out of the polls this week for the first time since Feb. 25. SCOUTING REPORT The Huskies were swept at Minnesota State last week (Oct. 18-19), losing 2-1 in the series opener and 6-1 the following night. F Jordan Sims, one of only four seniors on the squad, scored both team goals and centers the top line. UConn was picked to finish sixth out of 12 teams in the Atlantic Hockey Association Preseason Coaches Poll. Coach Mike Cavanaugh is in his first season behind the bench after spending 18 years as an assistant at Boston College. UConn will join Hockey East in 2014-15. Series history Union is unbeaten against Connecticut in 10 meetings, going 7-0-3. The Dutchmen have fared well in Storrs through the years, outscoring UConn 20-4 in four visits. The teams skated to a 2-2 tie last year at the Freitas Ice Forum. THE LAST TIME...
