President s Message Ed Gillen Due to a small surgical procedure on my left foot and on doctor s orders, I didn t run for a month. Now that I m cleared to run, it s summertime in Florida. Ugh! When you haven t ran in a month, you forget how hard it is to get back to a base of at least three miles. It s made even harder when you walk outside and before you take your first step you are soaking wet. Our state abbreviation is FL and for those of us who call FL home, we know that it stands for Feels Like. How do we do it? I remember a runner from up north who ran the Harbour Heights Half ask me that question after collapsing from the heat soon after crossing the finish line. It was an unseasonably hot 82 degrees at the start. I guess the answer is conditioning practice, practice, practice. We might not like it but we know it s a daily part of our training plan here in FL. How do we run in the Florida heat? There was a time not so long ago when the only race in the area was the Firecracker 5k in North Port. Now, we race through the summer. Be careful out there! Early or late, whether running, cycling and swimming make sure you properly hydrate. Closing with a joke It s so hot out, I saw two trees fighting over a dog! 3 Zoomersrun.com

Hydration By Grace Gowans Water. Water makes up 60% of the adult human body. And in Florida, especially, it can get easy to become dehydrated. So what exactly does hydration do for your body? Well, we ll figure that out Your body, in short, depends on water to survive. Every organ, tissue, and cell needs water to work correctly. Basically, your body depends on water to: maintain its healthy temperature of 98.6 o F, remove waste, and make all your joints twist and turn with ease. So, if we get all that wonderful water inside, how in the world does it get out of our system? I mean, because that 2 liter water you drank during your race is probably not going to hold you out the entire day, right? Well, water makes up half of your body weight, and you lose some every time you use the restroom, sweat during that exhausting race, even when you breathe. You lose water even faster when the weather is really hot, are physically active, or have a fever. And two of those things I just listed basically sum up all of you who are reading this: super-hot climate, and physically active people. That being said, you now know that this hydration thing does apply to you. Now, when you lose too much water, you become dehydrated. Now we, in Florida, know all too well about dehydration. But how do you know if you are dehydrated? Here are the symptoms: little to no urine, or urine that is darker than usual, dry mouth, sleepiness or fatigue, extreme thirst, headache, confusion, dizziness or lightheaded feelings, and no tears when crying. Now for the big question: how much water should you consume daily? The answer is: about 6-8 glasses. With that being said, different people may need different levels of water to stay hydrated. One person may need more than 8, another less than 8. But, let s be real, one to two glasses isn t going to cut it. Sorry folks. But some sports drinks can help with your daily water intake. And I m only adding this because you all are active. Thank me later. Alright, so, if you are planning to exercise at a high intensity for more than an hour, sports drinks may be helpful. They contain carbohydrates and electrolytes that increase your body s energy and help your body absorb water. But, be careful which ones you choose. They are often high in calories from added sugar, and, also, beware of high levels of sodium. Be sure to check the serving size and Nutrition Label as well. Now, let s be clear, sports drinks are not the same as energy drinks. Energy drinks contain all sorts of junk such as large amounts of caffeine and simulants that your body does not need. I hope this was helpful to you and that you learned a little bit about hydration. Be safe, have fun, and happy running! 5 Zoomersrun.com

Summer Has Arrived!!! Sometimes it is just to hot to eat, so a nice, cold smoothie will cool you off and allow you to recover from training. We all know you should eat something within 30 minutes of the end of your workout, and that it should nourish your body and help you recover. MOCHA MADNESS RECOVERY SHAKE Recipe from: Runners World...Meals on the Run cookbook (Liz Applegate, PH.D.) Research shows that consuming carbohydrates with caffeine increases the rate at which muscle glycogen is restored, helping speed recovery. Add in a good dose of protein from Greek yogurt and this shake has everything you need to recover from a long, hard run. Makes 1 serving 1/4 cup espresso or very strong coffee, cooled 1 cup 2% vanilla Greek Yogurt 2 TBSP sweetened ground chocolate or 1 ounce chocolate, finely chopped 1 banana 1/2 cup ice cubes In a blender, combine the espresso, yogurt, chocolate, banana and ice cubes. Blend until smooth. 19 Zoomersrun.com
