wind speed (knots) direction (degrees) A Good Result for the Over 35 s Wednesday Wonders Summer Series 2018-19 Race 17 (30 Jan 2019) Only 1 of the first half of the 38 yacht fleet to start the race had a handicap of less than 35 minutes. However, there was plenty to celebrate on THE SECRETARY (George Shaw) when she recorded her first WW s win since race 7 of the 2014-15 Summer Series. The SECRETARY was the best of 38 yachts that sailed around the 9.8 nautical mile course 12 in the slowest race of the series. The race began in a south easterly breeze of about 8 knots that increased to about 15 knots before easing back prior to the arrival of the forecast thunderstorms. They arrived shortly after the last yacht crossed the finish line at 17:02:22. (Between 1708 & 1712 four gusts of 39 knots were recorded at Fawkner Beacon) WW Summer Series 2018-19 Race 17 Wind Speed & Direction 30 25 20 15 10 5 0 1300 1330 1400 1430 1500 1530 1600 1630 1700 1730 Wind Speed 8 8 15 14 13 12 12 13 9 15 Gusts 9 12 17 16 14 14 13 14 13 27 Wind Direction 135 135 157.5 157.5 180 157.5 157.5 157.5 202.5 225 360 315 270 225 180 135 90 45 0 time Earlier in the day UPBEAT (Peter Dunne) last season s Misty Blue Trophy winner made the perfect start to become the seventh yacht to start a race right on time. THE SECRETARY was followed across the finish line by BABYDOLL (Brendan Kruger) who made this her 2 nd podium finish of the series. Third was CARPE DIEM (Paul Commins) who not only had her 2 nd podium finish of the series but also sailed the course in the fastest elapsed time of the race. SURI (Rick Blanck) remains at the top of the aggregate for the 2 nd successive week with THE SECRETARY in 2 nd place with PIPPA 3 rd. Coming back into the aggregate top ten was LUSCIOUS (Michael Butler) moving from 15 th to 7 th with BABYDOLL moving up from 18 th into 8 th place. Slipping out of the top ten were ROLLER COASTER (Geoffrey Simpson) and WHITE NOISE (Daniel Edwards). They went from 9 th to 11 th and 10 th to 12 th respectively.

It s been 146 Wednesday races since THE SECRETARY had her last win. She is one of 7 yachts to have completed 14 races this series, with 4 in the top ten including 2 podium finishes. She started from 30 th place only 3 seconds late for her 44 minute handicap. THE SECRETARY was still 20 minutes 3 seconds behind the race leader at SYC 4. She sailed the last 3 legs of the race in 45 minutes 17 seconds to finish 67 seconds ahead of her closest rival. THE SECRETARY crossed the finish line at 16:08:03 after sailing the course in 1:54:03 the third fastest elapsed time of the race. Out of a total of 17 weeks she has spent 12 in the aggregate top ten. BABYDOLL has completed 11 races this series with 4 top ten finishes including a first and now a second place. After an absence of 4 weeks she is back in the aggregate top ten in 8 th place. BABYDOLL had her second best start of the series 3 seconds late for a 36 minute handicap. She sailed the first 4 legs of the course in 1:13:47 and moved into 12 th place at the first rounding of SYC 4. Her last three legs of the race were completed in 49 minutes 20 seconds and she crossed the finish line at 16:09:10 in 2 nd place. CARPE DIEM equalled her previous best result, a 3 rd place in race 13, when she crossed the finish line 8 seconds behind BABYDOLL. This was her 8 th race in this series and she moves from 39 th to 35 th in the aggregate. CARPE DIEM started from 37 th place 9 seconds late for her 51 minute handicap. Although she completed the first four legs of the course in 66 minutes 10 seconds she was still well back in the fleet - 31 st place at the first rounding of SYC 4 and 27 minutes 24 seconds behind the race leader. CARPE DIEM sailed the last 3 legs of the course in 41 minutes 59 seconds crossing the finish line at 16:09:18. She had recorded the fastest elapsed time of the race for the 3 rd time this series.

Memberpoint Sign On At least one enthusiastic competitor has signed on their crew well in advance of the race and discovered that there was no record of the sign on. The Boating Department provided the following advice: MemberPoint clears your crew list if you re signing on too far in advance, I would suggest your crew sign on (MemberPoint) on the day you are racing. For example if you re racing on Wednesday, do your MemberPoint sign on that morning and remembering to press the submit button. Once you ve pressed submit the screen below will appear and it will also tell you who you have signed onto the boat. If you have any more issues or would like a hand with MemberPoint just come into the Boating Office and one of us will be happy to give you a hand. (Above) ESPRIT finished 11 th and is 6 th in the aggregate. (Right) PHOENIX completed her 4 th race of the series. (Left) a pleasant group that went their separate ways. (Right) BACARDI was 34 th to start & 8 th to finish. (Below) LEBROK overtook PRIMO finishing 4 th & 5 th respectively. (Below) Nice yacht. Was it in the race?

Our February Guest Speaker evening is Wednesday 13 February 2019 at 7:30pm in the Port Phillip Room. Our Guest Speaker will be SYC member Ken Gayler, and Ken will be speaking on the Alma Doepel. The Alma Doepel, which is a tall ship, was launched in 1903 and saw service as a merchant and lumber ship before being stripped of all rigging and used to carry limestone before being sold for scrap. She was, over 10 years extensively refitted to lead the Sydney Harbour Parade of Sail in 1988. After falling again into disrepair she is now being repaired and refitted again, at Victoria Dock with a view to provide sail training for young people who have lost their way. Ken Gayler, a club member since 1997 and the skipper of Saltshaker, has been involved with this refit since 2010. Being a biochemist by training he is well equipped to contribute to this highly commended project.
