Page 10 WWW.PINNACLESPORTSVIEW.COM October 2013 LMU Men picked to win SAC ROCK HILL, SC -- The Lincoln Memorial University men's basketball team was selected to win the South Atlantic Conference, while Vincent Bailey (Jennings, FL) and Lorenzo Ross (Savannah, GA) were tabbed with Preseason All-SAC laurels, the conference office announced with the 2013-14 men's basketball preseason release on Wednesday. The Railsplitters compiled a 25-6 overall mark with a 15-3 South Atlantic Conference tally in 2012-13, which gave the program its second regular-season league title in three years. Lincoln Memorial was selected to claim its third championship belt in 2013-14, as the Railsplitters earned 117 total points and seven of the 12 first place votes to take the top spot in the SAC Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll. LMU narrowly edged Carson-Newman, who collected 114 points and five first place votes for the second spot. Anderson finished third in the poll with 100 points. The preseason poll is voted on by each of the South Atlantic Conference's 12 head coaches. Lincoln Memorial, who was ranked 13th in nation according to the Division II Bulletin 2013-14 Preseason Preview and selected to win the SAC by that publication, heads into the upcoming season riding a number of impressive streaks. The Railsplitters have been ranked for a 42-straight weeks in the NABC/Division II Coaches Poll, a South Atlantic Conference record. The Railsplitters have also amassed four-straight 20- win seasons with three-straight 25-win campaigns while making three-straight appearances in the NCAA Southeast Regional. The Railsplitters advanced to the semifinals of the Southeast Regional last year for the second-consecutive season. Lincoln Memorial has tallied at least 14 SAC wins in each of the last three seasons. The Railsplitters are slated to kickoff the season on November 9, welcoming Hiwassee to Tex Turner Arena for a non-conference bout at 7 p.m.. South Atlantic Conference play begins shortly after that date, as the Railsplitters travel to Mars Hill, to take on Mars Hill on November 20. UK Men ranked #1 in AP preseason poll LEXINGTON, Ky. The UK men's basketball team is ranked at the top of the Associated Press Top 25 for the third time in the John Calipari era. Kentucky, who received 27 first-place votes, officially begins the fifth season of the John Calipari era as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation after hauling in its fifth consecutive top-ranked recruiting class. The Wildcats last started at No. 1 prior to the 1995-96 season. It's a nice honor, but it s way too early to figure out who s the best team in the country, Calipari said. We may be very talented, but I can t imagine us being the best team in the country at this point. Kentucky owns a 171-26 all-time mark as the top-ranked team (AP) in the country and has won 18 of their last 19 games as the AP's No. 1 team. One of my favorite creations in our world is that thing we call a day. You know, that 24 hours that comes to an end, only to begin another 24 hours. Now I know it doesn t take much to intrigue me but this has always been something that I have given thought to. And if you think about it, it is one of the most refreshing things about life. In hunting or fishing it doesn t matter what yesterday was like, today is a new day. It doesn t matter that I never saw a deer yesterday, today will be better. It doesn t matter if I didn t catch any fish yesterday, today may be the day they turn on. Again, if you really think about it hunters and fishermen are men and women of optimism. If we were not we would never get up the next morning and do it all over again. Today is a creation that is meant to be one of promise and hope, not dread and despair. It is meant to be a time for leaving the disappointments and discouragements of yesterday and holding on to the possibility of something better. It is also an opportunity to forget about the failures of days past and Outdoor Truths with Gary Miller embrace new mercy. There is a very important verse in the Bible that says this; Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each day. I really, really like that. and you should too. Let me tell you why. Some of you right now, really messed up yesterday. You made a promise that you broke. You perhaps succumbed to temptation. The determination that you thought you had, left you yesterday. The self-control that had been your ally, suddenly abandoned you yesterday. But that was yesterday. Today is today. It is new. You do not have to bring the failures of yesterday with you today. God s mercies begin afresh EACH day! You now have a choice; you can either run from God, ashamed of the failures of the past, or you can run to Him with a heart-felt confession, knowing that His faithfulness is great and that He has new mercy that He longs to show to you, afresh, beginning each and every day.
