Lauri Markkanen led the Wildcats in scoring and rebounding with 16 points and nine rebounds. It was the fourth time in his first five collegiate games that he has led UA in those two categories. The Wildcats and Bulldogs will meet for the first time on Friday since the 2001 NCAA Tournament. Arizona defeated Butler 73-52 in that game in Kansas City. Gilbert Arenas paced UA in scoring with 15 points with eight rebounds. Luke Walton recorded eight points and ten rebounds in the game as well. Freshman Rawle Alkins recorded three blocks in his team s win over Santa Clara, which were the most by a UA guard since Kadeem Allen had three blocks in UA s quadruple overtime thriller at USC in January. Alkins had just one block in four games prior to Thursday s game. UA is 17-12 (.586) against the current Big East membership in program history. The Wildcat s 58.6 winning percentage against the Big East is its third lowest fourth lowest against the 27 non-power Five conferences Arizona has faced. Butler is one of only three current Big East members that Arizona has not lost to, joining Xavier and St. John s. Arizona carries a record of 41-6 (.872) in the month of November under Sean Miller to Friday s finale of the 2016 Continental Tires Las Vegas Invitational. With wins in their first five games of the season, the Wildcats have gotten off to a 5-0 start for the fifth consecutive season. Friday s meeting with Butler will be the culmination of a seven-day stretch that featured four games for Arizona. Those numbers become even more staggering over his last three games with 20 assists and three turnovers in wins over Sacred Heart, Northern Colorado and Santa Clara. ROAD WARRIORS In addition to holding one of the highest home court winning percentages in the nation, Arizona has shown a knack for continuing its winning ways outside of Tucson. Since Sean Miller s arrival prior to the 2009-10 season, the Wildcats have posted a record of 82-49 (.623) away from McKale Center. That mark improves to 35-18 (.660) at neutral site locations. UA s records in the last three season are 42-17 (.712) outside of Tucson and 20-6 (.769) in neutral sites. FINNISH EFFICIENCY Lauri Markkanen s free throw shooting prowess is impressive for any player, let alone a 7-foot forward. The native of Finland missed one of his seven free throw attempts against Santa Clara, snapping a streak of 24 consecutive makes at the charity stripe. Markkanen is still shooting an impresisve 28 of 30 (.933) at the free throw line this season. WILDCATS IN SIN CITY The Wildcats are no stranger to Las Vegas with ongoing games versus UNLV and Sin City being the host of the Pac-12 Tournament every season. Since joining the Pac-12 prior to the 1978-79 season, Arizona is 12-11 in Las Vegas with a mark of 9-5 during the Miller era (2009-10). CONTINUED OFFENSIVE COHESION IN MILLER ERA KenPom s adjusted ofensive eiciency metric measures points scored per 100 possessions with adjustments for the quality of opposing defenses, the site of each game, and when each game was played (recent games get more weight). Arizona ended the season ranked 20th in the nation in KenPom s adjusted ofensive eiciency at 117.4. Here s how the 2015-16 ofense ranked in this metric compared to Sean Miller s previous Arizona teams. RISTIC S CAREER NIGHT VERSUS SACRED HEART Dusan Ristic posted a career night in his team s win over SHU. The junior center finished with 13 points, 15 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals while shooting 60.0 percent from the field. The 15 rebounds were a new career high, eclipsing his 11 rebounds over Pacific in the 2015-16 season opener. Friday night s performance was also the first doubledouble of his college career. LAURI MARKKANEN GETTING RECOGNITION Lauri Markkanen has garnered plenty of national media attention in the first month of his freshman season at the University of Arizona. The 7-footer from Finland has already been named to a trio of prestigious national award watch lists: *Karl Malone Award (nation s top power forward): 1 of 20 players on list *Naismith Trophy (national player of the year): 1 of 50 players on list *John R. The 81-consecutive weeks in the AP poll is currently the second-longest streak in the nation behind Kansas. Since the start of the 2012-13 season, Arizona has spent 60 weeks ranked in the top 10 of the AP poll during that span. UA took over the No. 1 ranking in the AP poll on Dec. 9, 2013, marking its irst top ranking since 2003 and the irst time a Pac-12 team had garnered the top spot since 2006. The Wildcats held the top spot for a program-record eight straight weeks. Arizona was one of just 11 programs in the nation to appear in all 20 Associated Press polls in 2012-13, and one of just eight programs nationally to do so in 2013-14. UA was the only program in the nation to be ranked in the top 10 in every AP poll in the 2013-14 and the 2014-15 seasons. Consecutive weeks in AP poll (as of Nov. 21) 1st Kansas 145 weeks 2nd Arizona 81 weeks 3rd Iowa State 59 weeks TOUGH TO BEAT Going back to the 2012-13 season, Arizona has sufered only 26 losses in its last four seasons. Only two of UA s last 22 losses have been by ten or more points. In its last 22 losses, 11 have been one possession games. UA s average margin of defeat in those 22 losses is 4.4 points. MILLER AND COMPANY INK FOUR DECORATED FUTURE WILDCATS Head coach Sean Miller and the Arizona Basketball program have announced the addition of four future Wildcats for the 2017 recruiting class. Deandre Ayton (Phoenix, Ariz.), Alex Barcello (Phoenix, Ariz.), Ira Lee (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Brandon Randolph (Yonkers, N.Y.) give Arizona another top recruiting class in the nation. Deandre Ayton 7 0 250 lbs. Center Phoenix, Ariz. Coach Sean Miller on Ayton: I m not going to sugarcoat it, Deandre is one of these once in a generation types of players. He s big, seven feet (tall). The fact that he hasn t lifted weights is astonishing to me because when you shake his hand, he has a physical presence as a young person that you don t often times see. One thing I m really excited for sure is to plug him into our strength and conditioning program, which is a real part of our program. The thing that impresses me about Deandre as a player is that he is really smart. He has the know-how to play with four other players that not a lot of big guys have. He can pass, he can step away from the basket and dribble the ball, and he s a really skilled player. *Widely considered to be the top prospect in the nation in the 2017 recruiting class *Became the first overall No. 1 recruit to commit to a Pac-12 school since 2007 *Named to Naismith Trophy Watch List as top prep player in the nation. Alex Barcello 6 2 180 lbs. Guard Phoenix, Ariz. Coach Miller on Barcello: Alex is a point guard from Phoenix and an incredible student. He has the makings to be an incredible leader, and has some characteristics of T.J. McConnell that we ve grown to love. I think that he has a fire inside of him, a toughness, and a love of the game that at that position you love to have. We are really elated to have him. Alex is not small, he s 6-1, 6-2 and has a good build to him. Another thing we love about Alex, in addition to his playmaking skills, is that he can really shoot the three Being from Phoenix is nice for his family. He has already won several state championships, and winning is a real part of his background. *ESPN Top 100 member and rated No. 2 player in Arizona behind Deandre Ayton *Helped guide Corona del Sol to back-to-back state championships *2014 Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year Ira Lee 6 8 220 lbs. Forward Los Angeles, Calif. Coach Miller on Lee: Ira Lee is the one we ve probably been with the longest in terms of our recruiting efforts. We identified Ira a long time ago and offered him a scholarship early on in his high school career. He s a guy with a high motor, plays the game with tremendous energy, and he s involved in so many different plays on both offense and defense. From a defensive perspective he has a chance to be great. Ira has the type of size and athleticism, but mostly the mindset of toughness that we really love. He s also a versatile player where he can play more than one position. He gives us versatility in that regard because you can play him in many different combinations, he s not a one position type player. *Member of ESPN Top 100 and rated in top ten nationally at his position *Rated as a top ten power forward by Scout.com *Son of Zeph Lee, former running back and defensive back with the Los Angeles Raiders Brandon Randolph 6 6 185 lbs. Guard Yonkers, N.Y. Coach Miller on Randolph: Brandon, like Alex (Barcello), is an exceptional shooter. Not a small two guard, he s around 6 5, 6 6. When you have that type of frame, strength and conditioning can give you additional skills that you may not have right now. He s got a great frame, but where his body will go over the next couple of years, it s exciting to think about. He s more than just a shooter, he s a basketball player, really knows how to pass the ball. He plays on one of the best high school teams in the country, and that winning environment on both the travel circuit as well as a highly completive high school. He s a high-character kid, tremendous student and comes from a great family. *Rated in ESPN Top 100 nationally and as a top five in-state prospect *Ranked as a top ten shooting guard nationally by Scout.com *Averaged 16 points per game in Nike EYBL summer circuit with 39 percent shooting from deep Others receiving votes: Baylor 60; California 38; Miami (Fla.) 37; Florida 26; Seton Hall 21; Florida State 20; Cincinnati 20; Colorado 11; Virginia Commonwealth 11; Butler 10; Notre Dame 9; Wichita State 9; Utah 7; North Carolina State 5; Dayton 5; Texas A&M 4; Virginia Tech 3; Connecticut 3; Oklahoma 3; Yale 2; Northern Iowa 1; Central Florida 1; Arkansas 1; Alabama at Birmingham 1; Cal State Bakersield 1. No Wildcat has played in more NBA games than Terry and Jefferson. Their combined 2,367 NBA games played entering this season were more than the entire Philadelphia 76ers roster on opening day (2,242). KOBI SIMMONS DEBUT Freshman Kobi Simmons led Arizona in scoring versus Michigan State with 18 points. He accounted for 15 of his team s 34 first-half points. His 18 points were the most by a UA freshman in his NCAA debut since Jerryd Bayless tallied 18 points in the 2007-08 season opener. RAY SMITH INJURY UPDATE University of Arizona forward Ray Smith has sufered a knee injury and will miss the 2016-17 season. Smith injured the ACL in his right knee as well as other ligament and meniscal damage in Tuesday s exhibition. He will have surgery in the upcoming month and begin the rehabilitation process. Smith later announced he would step away from the game after three ACL injuries in less than three years. Below is Head Coach Sean Miller s oicial statement. About a year ago I began my statement regarding Ray Smith s season-ending injury by saying, Ray Smith is one of the most talented young players that has ever entered our program. Unfortunately, I begin this year s statement by reiterating the special talent that Ray has on the basketball court and once again addressing a season-ending knee injury. In the 25 years I have been a college basketball coach, I have never felt as helpless as I did when I saw him go down on Tuesday night. No 19-year-old kid should have to experience three season-ending injuries in a 30-month period of time. I have watched Ray work with our strength and conditioning coach tirelessly for two years. I have seen him in our training room around the clock, doing everything he can to play the game he loves. To witness his extraordinary eforts and see this happen to him once again is beyond disheartening. Ray is surrounded by a community that loves Arizona Basketball, current and former teammates that look at him as a brother, and a coaching staf and family that is beyond supportive and forever with him. Although the mountain that Ray is climbing continues to change, my belief in him to be a resounding success in life has never been stronger. His intelligence, charisma and sheer will position him to be special in all that he does. I certainly look forward to helping him, as part of our basketball family, reach all of the goals that he sets out to achieve. REPLACING THE 2016 SENIOR CLASS The 2016-17 Arizona Wildcats return six scholarship players from a season ago and will look to replace the numbers of the 2016 senior class of Kaleb Tarczewski, Gabe York, Ryan Anderson and Mark Tollefsen. The foursome combined to record more than 50 percent of Arizona s points, rebounds, blocks and made three-point ield goals a year ago.
