NU takes on 25th-ranked Pittsburgh at 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday before a clash with Clarion in a match hosted by No. 2 Jake Herbert s alma mater, North Allegheny High School, at 11 a.m. CT Saturday. Herbert won a 2003 Pennsylvania state championship and compiled a 141-18 overall high school record while competing for North Allegheny. Now third all-time in career victories at Northwestern, Herbert is off to a 10-0 start in 2008. RETURN OF A CHAMPION Since rejoining the Northwestern lineup in 2008, sixth-year senior and 2007 NCAA champ Jake Herbert has returned to his old form after his Olympic redshirt year in 2007-08. Herbert has racked up a 10-0 record thus far while winning all but one match either by fall or major decision. He captured a title at the Michigan State Open, defeating Pitt s Zac Thomusseit in the finals. Herbert s nine victories up his career win total to 125, which ranks third all-time at NU. Herbert s career record is now 124-4, good for the best-ever career winning percentage for a Northwestern matman (.969). He trails only Jack Griffin (156) and Steve DePetro (146) on the school s all-time wins list. LAST TIME OUT Trailing by three heading into the last four matches, then-no. 17 Northwestern got critical pins by second-ranked Jake Herbert and heavyweight Paul Rands, along with decisions by Robert Kellogg and John Schoen down the stretch to down Northern Illinois at Welsh-Ryan Arena, 27-12. Kellogg s win at 174 lbs. turned the tides of the match in NU s favor. After missing two matches due to illness, freshman Jason Welch (157) returned to beat Bryan Deutsch, who was 6-1 entering the meet. WRESTLER TO WATCH Last time out against Northern Illinois, redshirt freshman John Schoen earned a hardfought 5-3 decision over Brad Dieckhaus to help NU put away the Huskies. With the score tied In the decisive period, Schoen scored a takedown and earned a riding time point to capture the match for the Wildcats. Under Cysewski s direction, 25 Wildcats have earned All-America honors and 84 wrestlers have qualified for the NCAA Championships. In 1990, his rookie year as head coach, Cysewski led Northwestern to a program-best fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships and a third-place finish in the Big Ten. Since then, he has produced three national champions and 11 Big Ten titlists. After a landmark year in 2006-07 in which Northwestern qualified six wrestlers for the NCAA Championships, won three Big Ten titles and one national championship and placed fourth nationally as a team, Cysewski maintained the program s standard of excellence in 2007-08. He once again guided six Wildcats to the NCAA championships and saw two earn All-American status, including Big Ten and national champion heavyweight, Dustin Fox. In addition, Cysewski was named USA Wrestling/ FILA Junior/University Person of the Year in July, 2008. Cysewski took over as the Wildcats head coach after serving eight seasons as an assistant under Tom Jarman. During that time, the Jarman-Cysewski tandem compiled a 108-79-1 record and produced seven All-Americans in eight years. Cysewski, 55, also has been active in his career on the international coaching scene. He was invited to coach a squad at the 1993 U.S. Olympic Festival and served as an assistant coach for the 1990 U.S. Wrestling Team at the World Cup Championships. He served as the head coach on the 1985-86 and 1988-89 ESPOIR World Cup teams, as well as the 1985 and 1986 U.S. National Team. He also served as head coach for the United States team at the 2005 Pan American Games. As a competitor, Cysewski captured many titles, including the World Cup Championship, the Pan Am Games, the New Zealand Games, the National Federation Championship and the AAU Championship. He was also a former All-American, U.S. World Team member and a five-time Midlands champion. Cysewski is a member of the Illinois Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Midlands Hall of Fame. A four-year starter at the University of Iowa, Cysewski earned All-America honors as a senior in 1976. He placed third nationally at 134 pounds that season and was co-captain of the national-champion Hawkeyes. At the Big Ten Championships, he placed second as a sophomore (126) and senior (134), and third as a freshman (126). During his college career, he won two Midlands titles, posted a 99-23-4 career record and graduated with a bachelor s degree in business administration (1977). Cysewski has served for six years on the National Wrestling Coaches Association, as well as four years on the NCAA Rules Committee.
