The Cowboys are ranked sixth in the USA Today/Intermat/NWCA Coaches poll and ninth in the W.I.N. Magazine dual team rankings. The match has been designated as a Be Bold, Wear Gold event, where fans are encouraged to wear gold a re to the meet. The UI Athle cs Ticket Office has already sold over 8,000 ckets for the meet and encourages fans to purchase ckets in advance. Tickets purchased in advance are $8 for adults and $4 for youth. Prices increase to $10 and $5 on match night. PAGE 2 HEAD COACH TOM BRANDS Former Hawkeye wrestler Tom Brands, a 1996 Olympic gold medalist and four- me all-american, is in his second season as Iowa s head wrestling coach. The three- me NCAA champion and member of wrestling s Hall of Fame is only the Hawkeyes eighth wrestling coach. He has an 21-5 overall and 5-3 Big Ten record at Iowa and a 38-25 career mark. In his first season at Iowa, Brands coached 165-pounder Mark Perry to Big Ten and NCAA tles. The Hawkeyes also crowned three all-americans in 2007, going 14-5 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten. Brands served as head coach at Virginia Tech University for two seasons (2005-06), recording a 17-20 dual mark. In his first season with the Hokies, Brands led the team to the 2005 regular season Atlan c Coast Conference tle, set a school record for dual meet wins (16) and had a school-record five wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships. During his tenure, Virginia Tech crowned five conference champions and two all-americans. Senior heavyweight Mike Faust was named 2006 ACC Wrestler of the Year. Prior to taking the helm at Virginia Tech, Brands was an assistant coach at Iowa for 12 seasons (1993-2004). He helped the Hawkeyes to a 177-27 record, seven NCAA and eight Big Ten tles, while crowning 23 NCAA Champions, 73 all- Americans and 36 Big Ten Champions. He was named Na onal Wrestling Coaches Associa on Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000. As a compe tor, Brands won the 1996 Olympic freestyle gold medal at 136.5 pounds in Atlanta, GA. He also won a gold medal at the 1993 World Freestyle Championships in Toronto, two World Cup gold medals (1994, 1995) and was the 1995 Pan American Games champion. He won four U.S. Na onals tles (1993-96) and made four straight U.S. World or Olympic teams (1993-96). Along with his twin brother, Terry, Tom was named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Year, John Smith Outstanding Freestyle Wrestler and Amateur Wrestling News Man of the Year in 1993. He was inducted into wrestling s Hall of Fame in 2001. Brands was a four- me all-american at Iowa (1989-92). During his Hawkeye career, he won three NCAA tles and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the 1992 NCAA Championships. Also a three- me Big Ten champion, Brands won 95 percent of his matches at Iowa. His career mark of 158-7-2, included an undefeated season in 1991 (45-0). JOHNSON COUNTY I-CLUB LUNCHEON The annual Johnson County I-Club wrestling luncheon will be held Friday at 11:45 a.m. at the First Avenue Club in Iowa City. To purchase ckets, make a check payable to the Johnson County I-Club and mail to: Iowa Wrestling, ATTN: Luncheon 223 Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa City, IA 52242 OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS Oklahoma State is 5-1 with wins over Binghamton (47-3), Clarion (38-6), Hofstra (20-16) and American (42-0), and a loss to Oklahoma (21-9). The Cowboys finished second at the Reno Tournament of Champions, crowning two individual champs. Head Coach John Smith is 255-33-2 in 17 years at Oklahoma State. Smith, who is the all- me winningest coach in school history, was a two- me NCAA champion (1987-88) for the Cowboys and a two- me Olympic gold medalist (1988, 1992). He is assisted by Mark Branch and Eric Guerrero, who wrestled for Smith at Oklahoma State. The Cowboys return three all-americans in seniors Coleman Sco (133) and Nathan Morgan (141), and junior Brandon Mason (174). Sco is ranked first in the na on and is 14-2. Morgan is ranked first, fourth and sixth in the na on by three different polls and is 16-2. Mason, a na ve of Shenandoah, IA, is ranked between fourth and sixth, and is 13-2.

WRESTLING WEEKLY RELEASE PAGE 3 HAWKEYE SOPHOMORES TO BE PUT TO THE TEST Hawkeye sophomores Joe Slaton (133), Dan LeClere (141), Ryan Morningstar (157) and Jay Borschel (174) are all set to have matches against higher or similarranked opponents Saturday. Slaton, who is ranked in the top three, will face topranked senior Coleman Sco at 133. Sco placed second at the 2007 NCAA Championships and is 14-2 this season. It will be the first mee ng between the two. LeClere will wrestle senior two- me all-american Nathan Morgan, who is ranked in the top six at 141. The two were set to meet at the 2006 Northern Iowa Open where LeClere was compe ng una ached. Morgan was forced to medically forfeit the match. Morningstar and his opponent - junior Newly Mc- Spadden - are both ranked between 14-20 at 157. Morningstar holds a 2-1 advantage against McSpadden, winning the first two mee ngs last season by decisions (5-3, 2-1 TB-2), but losing the last mee ng at the dual in S llwater (2-0). McSpadden is 16-3 this season. Borschel will face Shenandoah na ve Brandon Mason, who is ranked in the top six at 174. Mason is a returning all-american and holds a 13-2 record this season. Mason won the only collegiate mee ng between the two - a 4-2 decision at the 2006 Kaufman-Brand Open while Borschel was compe ng una ached. LAST MEETING Iowa fell to 9-2 with a 21-11 loss at S llwater on Jan. 19. The Cowboys improved to 10-3 with the win, and extended their winning streak in the series to eight matches. It was also Iowa s second loss to Oklahoma State in seven days. The Cowboys scored a 22-13 win on Jan. 13 at the N.W.C.A./Cliff Keen Na onal Duals in Cedar Falls, IA. The Hawkeyes jumped out to a solid start behind decisions from sophomore Charlie Falck (125) and senior Alex Grunder (149), as both avenged early season losses to their respec ve Cowboy opponents. Falck narrowly missed a major decision with a 9-2 win over redshirt freshman Tyler Shinn in the opening match. Grunder defeated freshman Dakotah Simpson, 5-2. The Cowboys picked up wins at 133 and 141, making the team score 6-6 a er the first four matches. That score put Iowa in a much be er posi on than the 15-0 deficit it was in at the same point at Na onal Duals. Perry s father, Mark Perry, Sr., was a two- me Big 12 Conference champion (1984-85) at 118 pounds and a three-year le erwinner (1983-85) for the Cowboys. He also served as an assistant coach on the Oklahoma State wrestling staff for eight seasons (1992-99). THE SERIES Oklahoma State leads the series, 24-16-1, and has won the last eight meetings. Iowa s last win in the series was 20-14, in Iowa City in 2000. Iowa holds a 9-8 advantage in matches wrestled in Iowa City. HAWKEYES WIN MIDLANDS TITLE, CROWN FOUR CHAMPIONS The Hawkeyes crowned four individual champions en route to winning the 2007 Midlands team tle Sunday night in Evanston, IL. Iowa won its 19th team tle in school history and its first since 2002. Iowa scored 185 points to win the 45th annual tournament. Defending team champion Iowa State placed second with 139. Iowa went four-for-five in the finals with junior Mark Perry (165) and sophomores Joe Slaton (133), Dan LeClere (141) and Brent Metcalf (149) each winning individual tles. It was Perry s second career tle and his fourth appearance in the finals. It was the first tle for Slaton, LeClere and Metcalf. Slaton set the tone for Iowa in the finals with a 6-2 upset over top seed Franklin Gomez of Indiana to remain undefeated at 12-0. LeClere followed with a narrow 5-4 upset over second seed Zack Bailey of Oklahoma. Metcalf won Iowa s third straight tle, racking up third-period points to beat fi h seed Jake Patascil of Purdue by an 18-5 major decision. Perry made Iowa four-for-four in the finals with his 8-0 major decision over fi h seed Jonathan Reader of Iowa State. Sophomore Jay Borschel wrestled above his sixth seed, but could not pull the upset over top seed Keith Gavin of Pi sburgh and lost Iowa s final championship match, 13-4. For his efforts, Perry was named the Art Kra Champion of Champions and the Dan Gable Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. He scored the most team points (30) of any compe tor in the tournament, and recorded the most falls in the fastest me (four in 8:10). CARVER-HAWKEYE ARENA Carver-Hawkeye Arena has been the home of Iowa wrestling since 1983. The Hawkeyes are 158-17 (.903) in the arena, which includes a record 10 victories during the 1986 season. Iowa has recorded 16 undefeated seasons in the arena, with the most recent (8-0) occurring in 2002-03. The dual wrestling a endance record for Carver-Hawkeye Arena is 15,291, set when Iowa defeated Iowa State on February 22, 1992. The arena seats 15,500 for a dual wrestling meet.
