Dear Club Member May 2013 With the Club Championships now concluded and the move to winter start times for Saturday and Sunday, we are entering the quiet period in the club's tennis and social calendar. The availability of grass tennis courts will become more uncertain and no doubt the weather will prevent many playing opportunities. But remember social tennis continues every Saturday and Sunday afternoon throughout the year and we look forward to your continued participation. We have had some excellent attendances on both days in recent weeks and we hope this will continue throughout the winter, weather permitting of course. This issue of OTN reports on the results of this year's club Championships. For those of you who did make it along to the main finals afternoon, I am sure you will agree there was some outstanding tennis on display. The next main event on our tennis calendar is the Calcutta to be played on Sunday 19 May. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the day to share in some fun tennis and, with luck or great play, some Calcutta pool winnings. Barry Nazer President Page 1

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS This year's tournament produced what could be the longest match ever played in the history of our Club Championships. It was the opening round of the men's singles with David Graham matched against Carl Somers. The final score line showed Carl winning 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 which somehow didn't reflect that the match took THREE HOURS to complete. In the next round Carl met the number one seed, Ryan Maxfield (who also happens to be Carl s coach) and progressed no further in the event. David showed his tennis tenacity by going on to win the plate event (in three sets). The presence of two coaches, Jason Roberts and Ryan Maxfield in the Championships played a considerable part in raising the standard of the tennis, especially in the finals. It was encouraging to see a number of new players participating for the first time this year with some of them competing with success. A big thank you from the committee to all of those who participated. We will be looking for an even greater number of entries next year, especially from our female members. And the results of the 2013 Club Championships were: Main Events Winner Runner up Men s Singles Open Ryan Maxfield Danny Usher 50+ Gerry Hofmann Ivan Zuvela Men s Doubles Open Ryan Maxfield Danny Usher Luke Ashford Hugo Green 50+ Gerry Hofmann Erik Petersen Peter Matviev Richard Yorg Ladies Singles Open Astrid Kanther Fiona Davis Ladies Doubles Open Fiona Davis Jaime Adeane Mareena Weston Thuc An Le Tat 50+ Tracey Hondros Pam McMahon Jean Mallinckrodt Sue Thomas Mixed Doubles Open Jason Roberts Bernard Carney Kimberley Kain Fiona Davis Page 3

If you are proposing someone for this category of membership please advise them to contact RKPTC in the first instance and to not contact Next Generation until they have received advice from RKPTC on their application to join as a Passport member. Details of this new Passport membership category are as follows: New Passport members will pay the same annual fee and be subject to the same terms and conditions as current Foundation members. New Passport members will have full access to all NG facilities. The category will only be available to new members of NG. Unfortunately existing NG Ace members may not join or restyle to this category. The membership category may not be advertised externally and may only be offered by invitation from the Club. Members must be considered active members of the Club (as determined by the Club s committee) to maintain this membership status. There is a minimum playing standard requirement. In terms of defining an active member, the committee will be reviewing the member s participation in: i. organised play on Saturday and/or Sunday afternoons and twilights, ii. pennant teams, Page 4

iii. iv. tournaments (such as Easter tennis, Club Championships and Calcutta) and the Club s social events. CHAIRS ON GRASS COURTS In the previous issue of OTN we emphasised that any shoe that is likely to cause damage to the surface of a grass tennis court should not be worn, including a shoe with a ripple or studded sole or with a raised heel and a shoe designed for running, jogging or playing cricket. In the same vein we ask that consideration be given to the damage that may be caused to a grass court by taking a chair onto the court. It is appreciated that with an ageing membership some of you may need to rest your tired body between games. If you are in this situation we request that you only use the green plastic chairs with the wide base at the end of the legs. Under no circumstances should the white chairs (or any chairs) with very narrow legs be taken onto a grass court. CALCUTTA EVENT This year's Calcutta Social Mixed Fun Tennis Day is to be held on 19 May. The entry fee is $25 per player & includes a Sausage Sizzle during the finals playoff. The bar in the Lower Pavilion will be open. Spaces are limited to 24 male and 24 female participants. All players will be matched according to grading to facilitate an even competition and each Mixed Doubles team will be randomly assigned to one of 4 pools for a round robin playoff. Winners of each pool will advance to a Semi Final berth playoff. A Grand Final will be played to determine the Calcutta winners and runner up team and various spot awards will also be distributed. The auction for each team will commence at 9.30 am on the morning of the Calcutta and play will commence at 10.00 am. Any member (or consortorium) may bid to own a Mixed Doubles Team and you may bid for your own team. To book for the event simply log on to: http://www.trybooking.com/7284 Page 5

VISIT TO MEMORIAL DRIVE TENNIS CLUB As mentioned in the previous OTN we are planning a visit to Memorial Drive Tennis Club in Adelaide in early October (either the weekend of 5/6 October or 12/13 October) and are seeking expressions of interest for that trip. We have advised Memorial Drive that we are planning for our team to be no smaller than 10 and no larger than 20 with a mix of male and female participants with probably more male than female attendees. So if a leisurely visit to the City of Churches mixed with some energetic tennis and après tennis socialising appeals to you, please let Marika know of your interest and we will start putting our team together.
