Orchards Links F R I D A Y, M A Y 2 2, 2 0 1 5 From the General Manager Jason Waters, PGA General Manager, Orchards Golf Club I n s i d e t h i s i s s u e : From the GM Upcoming Events On the Course 1 2 3 From the Pro 4 Food & Beverage Weekly Specials 5 6 Calendar 7 Orchards Member, It has been a very busy wee so far and I hope all of you are planning a fun holiday weekend. We hope to see many of you around the club. It looks like the weather will be beautiful here at the club, so hopefully you will have a chance to enjoy our wonderful course. I want to wish good luck to all the competitors of the Andy Vitali this weekend. It is nice to see that 40 men s teams and 3 women s teams will be joining us this weekend, playing in one of our Orchards Traditions. On Monday, Chef Mark has planned a great barbeque on the deck beginning at 12pm. It s a long weekend. Come let us cook for you. New this year is a Senior s league on Thursday s. We would like to really get this going, so if you have any interest or would like more information, please contact the golf shop. There are a number of events that will be here before you know it. The James D. Young and Elisabeth Skinner are both that come to mind. Please get your application in before it s SOLD OUT! This week, we were fortunate to have visitors from both Century Golf, our management company, as well as CBIGG, our ownership group which has the rights to the lease of the Orchards. Mike Akeroyd, whom many of you know was here to assist the CBIGG team along with all department heads of the club. The CBIGG group was led by Randy Jones, CEO. Accompanying him was Tony Miller, Vice President of Agronomy, Tony Re, Vice President of Golf, and Patrick Barrett, Vice President of Buildings and Maintenance. It was a pleasure having all of these gentlemen come to the club and work on a thorough assessment of the property so a sound plan can be made on how move the Orchards forward, making your member experience more enjoyable. Topics regarding improvements to tees, drainage, conservation, tree removals, and maintenance equipment were covered as a plan will be made to address these needs for the course. Issues on the parking lot, kitchen equipment, painting and HVAC were covered for the building. I truly believe the next few months and years will be exciting around the club. There is a major commitment to improvement and I think all will be pleasantly surprised.

On the Course Matt Streeter Superintendent The seesaw movement of weather from hot and summer-like back to cool and spring-like has had some really positive affects on turfgrass throughout the course. Rough areas love the fluctuating hot and cool days, and unfortunately we re having a difficult time keeping up with cutting the rough. It s not a planned approach, and we re not trying to penalize shots that make it to the rough, so we re adding more manpower and shifting our focus slightly so that rough is more manageable from a playing standpoint. As we roll into summer and the turf growth slows a bit it should be more in line with the heights and consistency we established last year. Greens are certainly making strides towards complete recovery, yet still have some time left before they re where we all expect for summertime. We re in the final leg of healing - which entails spending considerable time each day and week hand topdressing the spots with green sand. This technique will smooth out the blemishes while also integrating additional seed into the remaining bare spots. The sand also acts as a medium for any creeping bentgrass to grab onto, which will further fill on those spots. Tees and fairways are in a similar state to greens- they ve been slice seeded and are showing good signs of growth. We will now topdress as much as possible and continue to promote filling in via additional seed, judicious watering, and applications of foliar fertilizers to help those plants stay strong and healthy for the long term. We re nearing full staffing levels for the summer, so it s about time for us to expand our daily and weekly regimens. I ll update those details in the near future, but in the mean time please have a great holiday weekend and enjoy each and every round out there! #9 White Tee Filling in Nicely Page 3

P a g e 4 From the Pro Jonathan Banas, PGA, Head Golf Professional Dear Members, I hope that everyone has been enjoying this run of beautiful summer like weather and have been able to get out on the golf course. I know our superintendents are happy to see a sprinkle of rain, but it looks like it will be smooth sailing for us golfers for Memorial Day. It is looking like it will be a wonderful weekend for all. We also have a great line up of events on the docket below coming up. Please read over and contact myself or staff with any questions. Hope to see you all out there! Trade In, Trade Up If grips are not going to do it, and you have clubs that are ready for retirement trade them up for $$ towards something new. This year we will have the ability to take your old gear and trade them in towards the purchase of some new equipment. Just let the golf shop know what you have to trade in, and we will place the most current value for trade in. Come see any of the pro shop staff for more details. JAMES D.
