CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Philadelphia Chapter - American Singles Golf Association June 2017 From the Prez Rain, rain, go away, and come again some other day. Well, it's been a tough start to the season with all the cancellations we've had, but we managed to get rounds in at Westover, Downingtown, and Center Square. The rest of the season is now pretty full with just a few open spots left. See the Board meeting Minutes golf report, and if you feel like stepping up to the plate to organize an outing please do so. It will be greatly appreciated. On a sad note, please join me in sending prayers and good thoughts to Lori Alvarez, whose son passed away on May 21. Our thoughts are with you Lori. This time of year we are normally getting into the summer swing of things so weather permitting we will have a good rest of the season. There is not much to write, as things are pretty quiet. The Board met on May 23, and minutes can be found in this newsletter. If you have any concerns or need to discuss anything, please don't hesitate to contact me, as I am always available for you. See you on the links. ~Paul Corby May Golf Outings Recap Downingtown Cool and damp weather greeted thirtyfive hearty golfers who showed up to compete in a Pink Ball tournament at Downingtown Country Club on Saturday, May 20. Some five hours later, three groups emerged with both of their pink balls. Congratulations to Jen Ott, Peggy Kane, Rich Switzer, and Paul O Connell, who recorded the winning low gross score of 94. Closest to the pin awards went to Maria Ascanio and Rene Kuenkel. Honorable mention must go to two individuals who made a day of golf very interesting. On 16, Sally Thompson-Bell hit her ball dead center into the 150-yard marker. Miraculously, she avoided physical injury, as her ball ended up farther back from where she started. Rich Switzer s legal background almost came into play when he hit his ball directly into a wedding party that was posing for photographs on the golf course. Although Jen and Paul frantically yelled fore, it was obvious from their facial expressions that the wedding party had no idea what it meant. To date, no lawsuits have been filed. ~Joanne Kendall Westover Thanks to the 35 golfers who arrived at Westover Golf Club eager to play even though clouds were lurking above. They trusted my message the sun would shine. A few intermittent showers did not spoil their fun, despite unexpected excitement on the course. Sharon Weaver and David Walsh went on a spin in the golf cart on the wet grass but laughed all the way to the next shot. Sorry no videos available. At Chaps Bar and Grill we anxiously watched "the Run for the Roses" to see if the horse we had picked would be a winner. First place winnings went to Mark Upcoming Multi-Chapter Events (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Canada - July 2017 - Tremblant + Montreal. A cool place to be in the heat of summer! All details at www.singlesgolf.com/canada Battle At The Beach 2017 - October or November, 2017. East Coast USA. Details posted in early- to mid-summer. Albany's Coopertown, NY Golf Weekend - September 22-24, 2017. Playing golf at Leatherstocking. Details out in a month or two, or, contact Ellen Riley by clicking here. River Cruise - Paris, France, September, 2018 - This will be a river cruise up the Seine River. We'd like to spend 10-12 days in France. Dates for the 2018 Ryder Cup are September 28-30, 2018 but this river cruise itinerary will not be timed perfectly to coincide with the Ryder Cup, unless you want to spend some extra days in Paris on your own. Derby Hats, a tradition, were creative and colorful. Golfers voted on their favorites: Bill Moyer and Rene Mealey. Congratulations to all our winners; hope to see you again next year. ~Rene Mealey and Bill Moyer Center Square We lucked out again to be able to again play Center Square for the third year in a row while pending sale. Thirty-five golfers and one rider (Deb Delp on injured reserve list) got to enjoy the first sunny Saturday of the season at the rescheduled outing. Though the weather threatened rain, Mother Nature knew better than to mess around with our group and instead presented us with a pleasant day to kick off the Memorial Day Weekend. It was fun to see our players sprinkled around the course decked out in their red/white and blue garb enjoying each other s company. Soft pretzels and spring water treats kick started the day, and all enjoyed drinks and dinner at the course restaurant following the round. Let s hope for another round 2018. ~Tricia Steege Communications Chairperson Christine Brady c.b96@comcast.net 610-662-1389 Paul Corby applauds the Derby hat contestants Treasurer Troy Newell tnewell371@verizon.net 484-919-0878 Deb Delp s view on May 20. Board Minutes The Philadelphia ASGA chapter board met at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, May 23, 2017. In attendance were: Paul Corby, president, Troy Newell, treasurer, Joanne Kendall, golf chair, Sally Thompson-Bell, membership chair, Maria Zuliani, social chair, and Chris Brady, communications chair. Treasurer Report As of May 20, 2017 we have $4428.44 cash on hand. New Outing Cancellation Policy Bad weather and light enrollments have resulted in cancellations of several golf outings in April and May. The Board discussed whether outings should ever be cancelled because of light registration. All agreed that we should always try to run the outing, either by changing a modified shotgun to tee times, or by working with the course for alternatives. The board agreed that coordinators should not make cancellation decisions unilaterally and should first contact Paul Corby before communicating that an outing has been cancelled. Many ASGA members wait until the last minute to sign up for outings, which can be challenging for the coordinators who are making pairings and working under a specified agreement with the course. Deadlines are imposed so that the courses can free up tee times for other golfers. Courses depend on the revenues from greens fees, and they can t just open up spots when last minute registrants decide they want to play. Last minute registrations can only be honored if there is a threesome. Chris Brady will email regular reminders to members on the Wednesday a week before the outing to motivate timeliness in sending registrations forms and checks. We ll also suggest late registrants advise coordinators that they want to come by phone or email and confirm that they can pay their registration fee at the course. Some coordinators honor this practice but others do not. Considering New Payment Options Currently, we accept checks and cash as payment for greens fees, and some members pay through their online checking bill payment feature. Board members discussed ways to make payment easier for members including online checking and Paypal. The Board asks members if there is interest in electronic payments, or if they have other ideas for more convenient payment options. (We want to avoid credit cards because of the complexity and risk.) Golf Schedule Joanne Kendall shared the calendar, which is fully confirmed through September. We still need coordinators for a Labor Day outing and for two dates in October. We encourage Bucks County members to coordinate an event at one of the good courses closer to their homes. Makefield Highlands was discussed as an option. Maria Zuliani may investigate that as an option for Labor Day or October openings. Bulle Rock, MD Outing We have finalized the August 5, 2017 joint golf outing with the Washington DC Chapter. The flyer will be posted soon. Bulle Rock is the considered the best public golf course in Maryland, and the greens fee is normally upwards of $150. We have negotiated a per person package, including golf, cart, practice range, locker/shower usage, $5 pro shop credit, buffet dinner, and all gratuities and taxes, for the fee of $127.46. We feel this is a great deal and a wonderful opportunity to play this course and also to golf and socialize with the DC members. As soon as the flyer is posted, members may send Joanne checks, made out to ASGA. Bulle Rock needs to get an early head count for both golf and dinner, so we will encourage early registrations. Pace of play Board members discussed ways to encourage standard pace of play. Some members are new to golf and may not realize they can (and should) adjust the rules as they are learning so they can keep up with the other players. If new golfers are struggling off the tee, they should pick up and play the best ball in the foursome to keep the pace of play moving forward. All members should pick up when you reach double par. The meeting adjourned at 8:30 pm. There are a lot of proposed rule changes, and you can read about all of them over at the USGA website. The plan is to take feedback from golfers now, finalize the changes in 2018, and introduce them officially to the rules of golf on Jan. 1, 2019. Here are the 10 rule changes that jumped out the most for making sense: 1. Player accidentally moves ball - If a player accidentally moves a ball when searching for it, or accidentally moves his/her ball marker or ball on the putting green, the new rule will be that there is no penalty. Current rule: 1-stroke penalty. 2. Accidental deflection - If a player s ball in motion accidentally hits the player, his or her caddie, the person attending the flagstick or the attended or removed flagstick, the new rule will be that there is no penalty. Current rule: 1-stroke penalty (or 2-stroke penalty when the accidental deflection relates to the flagstick) 3. Time to search for lost ball - The new rule will be that you are allowed to search for a lost ball for three minutes. Current rule: You may search for five minutes. 4. Taking relief for a ball embedded in pitch mark - A player may take relief without penalty for an embedded ball anywhere (except in sand) in the general area (new term for through the green ), unless a Local Rule has been adopted restricting relief only to areas cut to fairway height or less. Current rule: Relief is allowed only in areas cut to fairway height or less, unless a Local Rule has been adopted allowing relief anywhere (except in sand) through the green. 5. Repairing damage on putting green - New rule: A player may repair almost any damage (including spike marks and animal damage but not including natural imperfections) on the putting green. Current rule: A player may only repair ball-marks or old hole plugs on the putting green. 6. Touching sand in the bunker with club or hand - New rule: No penalty except when a player touches sand (1) with his or her hand or club to test the conditions of the bunker or (2) with the club in the area right behind or in front of the ball, in making a practice swing or in making the backswing for the stroke. Current rule: Any touching of sand with hand or club results in loss of hole/2-stroke penalty (with exceptions). 7. Playing with damaged club - New rule: A player may keep using any damaged club, even if the player damaged it in anger. Current rule: A player may use the damaged club only if it was damaged in the normal course of play. 8. Advice and help - New rule: A caddie is not allowed to stand on a line behind a player while the player is taking his or her stance and until stroke is made. Current rule: A caddie is allowed to stand on a line behind a player while the player is taking a stance and preparing to play, but must not stand there while the player makes the stroke. 9. Pace of play - New rule: Recommends that players make each stroke in no more than 40 seconds, and usually in less time. Current rule: No recommendations are given. 10. Trusting players' judgment - New rule: When estimating or measuring a spot, point, line, area or distance under a Rule, a player s reasonable judgment will not be secondguessed based on later evidence (such as video review) if the player did all that could be reasonably expected under the circumstances to make an accurate estimation or measurement. Current rule: A player s judgment is given no particular weight or deference; the Committee decides any issue about the accuracy of the estimation or measurement based on a review of all facts.

Sign-up with a friend if you want to save money and share a room. The 2018 Seine River Cruise Paris, France September 9 18, 2018 We ve selected Tauck as our river cruise company of choice. Tauck, a 92-year-old company that started providing tours to parts of America and Canada many people had never seen, has helped ASGA plan this trip with a promise our members will thoroughly enjoy from private tours of small and historic French towns along the Seine River to the beauty of the MS Swiss Sapphire ship itself, the professionalism of the Tauck staff, to the highly acclaimed food that will be prepared for us each evening. Having taken this itinerary as a site visit in October of last year, I can personally attest to the great first class value. ASGA has special pricing. We never pay what the public pays for our multi-chapter events, whether on the mainland or overseas. (We re not allowed to actually tell you price difference, but if you go to the website and click on the COST tab, see for yourself!) Our itinerary is to visit the historic monuments in Rouen, the English Channel villages of Etretat and Honfleur, Jumieges Abbey, one of the great Benedictines of France, Chateau Gaillard, Claude Monet s home and a lot more. At our halfway point on the cruise, we ll visit the D-Day beaches of Normandy. Head to www.singlesgolf.com/rivercruise or review the video at www.singlesgolf.com/rivercruisevideo. Tauck even offers quarterly payments to make it easier on you. So be thinking about whom you d like to room with to save on your overall costs. Airfare to Paris is not included and we urge you to purchase trip insurance since the trip is 15 months away! Golf Rules Yes, golf rules much of our lives but did you know there s a series of proposed golf rule changes? In an attempt to make the game a bit friendlier and to hasten play, the USGA and the R&A have tossed out some suggestions for some (much needed) rule changes. Well, much needed if you re on the PGA tour. Seven proposals have to do with taking relief. Totally not what you re thinking... although I have taken relief many times on the course. It s part of the rules, folks. So your ball is in the bunker and Mr. Butterfly lands on your ball. He s impressed with those cute divots. So impressed that he stays there seemingly forever. Under current rules, he s consider a loose impediment and you cannot do anything to shoo him or any other loose impediment away. With the proposed rule changes, all impediments can be moved. So this sets the stage for some interesting reading, like the new rules telling you how to drop a ball. I ve been doing that all my life or so I ve been told.
