THE HARRIER (SEPTEMBER 2017 NEWSLETTER) Ken Summers just avoids falling at the Autumn Trail Race! Well done to everyone who completed the Autumn Trail Race today. There was plenty of drama at the final water crossing with several athletes getting a drenching! It was good to see Neil Holmes racing again after several months out of action through injury. We also had a good turnout in the Fun Run. The Autumn Trail is hopefully a taster for the forthcoming Westward League Cross Country series let s have a good turnout. The opening race on Sunday 8 October is at a great venue at Stover. Many thanks to Mike Hoskin for his report on his 100 mile race what an achievement! Mike has hardly had time to recover before finishing today s New Forest Marathon in a respectable time of 3.30.56 - Dave Fox (Editor)

SECRETARY S NOTES Changing of the seasons. The seasons are very much changing now both athletically and sadly weather-wise. The cross country season begins at Stover next month and we really hope that it can be a better season for the club. Thanks to Ken for taking on the role of Senior Team Manager. The track season is all but over now and the Devon Sportshall season is about to start for our juniors. Good luck to everyone who represents the club. It is the reason why we all train in whatever the discipline you take part in. We really appreciate our volunteers but the club does need new blood. Training and Coaching Our junior training returned to normal numbers last week after a quiet summer. We are struggling for coaches, so if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. We are trying to focus our junior coaching to support the athletes who regularly compete for the club. We feel it is key to offer quality rather that crowd control. I hope everyone will understand and support us. Track and Field The season has just a couple of events left to run and it has been a bit disappointing. Having said that the ones who have regularly competed have developed well and performed better each time. This is why we feel the streamlining process is required. The younger athletes (U15 and below) have a Sportshall season to develop their skills but the older ones need to look at Indoor competitions at Cardiff or Birmingham or take part in the Cross Country Leagues. Road Running The busy autumn series of races are now beginning. A few of our athletes ran in Cardiff at the 10k and we had two age group records set at Bridgwater in the Half Marathon. Locally there is the Plymouth 10K and the Great West Run to look forward to. Next week is the final 5K race of the series in Saltram. Athletes of the month Congratulations to David Church and Alex Sheridan who are the athletes of the month for July/August. Cross Country As we said last month the Westward League is a local series of races in age groups from U11 to vets. The races are monthly, and we really hope we can have a good turnout of EVH athletes at these races. It is great training and builds your stamina. Ken has agreed to take on the team management and senior recruitment. We could do with a junior team manager as well. The first one is at Stover School on Sunday 8 th October. It is a fantastic course and should prove a great start to the season. Erme Valley s Trigg finishes 12th in triple jump at World University Games Posted on August 25, 2017 by PLYMOUTH SPORTS GAZETTE ERME Valley Harriers Sam Trigg finished 12th in the triple jump at the World University Games in Chinese Taipei. Competing for Great Britain, Trigg booked his place in the final with a solid 15.61m in the qualification round. The former Ivybridge Community College pupil s best for the season is 16.38m and he was looking to try and match that in the final, which contained many athletes who had competed at the recent IAAF World Championships. However, in tricky conditions, the final did not go as planned for Trigg, who had claimed All-American honours earlier in the summer while studying at the University of New Mexico. He managed to get a first jump in of 14.94m, but then fouled on his next two efforts. Trigg was not the only athlete to have problems in the final. American Tony Carodine Jnr also failed to make the top eight after fouling twice. The event was won by European Under-23 champion Nazim Babayev of Azerbaijan.

THE NORTH DOWNS WAY 100 by MIKE HOSKIN The NDW 100 is a 103 mile continuous trail run along the North Downs Way. The course travels from Farnham in the Surrey hills to Ashford in Kent. My race really started just after 1 am on Saturday morning to get to Farnham for 6 am. After a check of my mandatory kit and the race briefing we walked down to the start. At 6 am the Race Director shouted go and 229 of us started our journey. The first 24 miles were run through a mixture of woods, fields and some country lanes, passing two checkpoints until we got to the Box Hill checkpoint. 86 steps apparently my calves felt nearly everyone one! I arrived at Knockholt Pound which was the halfway point at around 9.5 hours. After refuelling on a bowl of pasta I then started off again. Over the next few hours passing several checkpoints (one was giving away free running pants) I arrived at the 91 mile checkpoint. It was here that I realised I could finish under 24 hours. After 100 miles I turned off the NDW and ran what seemed to be a long 3 miles to the finish line on Ashford athletic track. The clock at the finish said 22 hours and 24 minutes, which was a surprise as I was not expecting to go under 24 hours. All that was left was to wait until 12 o clock for the coach to take me back to the start to pick up my car and a short drive to a hotel for some much needed recovery.

CARDIFF 10K - SUNDAY 3 SEPTEMBER Our athletes who made the trip did very well with Joe Perry and Craig MacLellan having outstanding runs. Joe had been in good form leading up to the race with a fine 4.53 time in a BMC 1500m event. Rebecca Lee is getting ever closer to breaking the 50 minute barrier. Cleo managed to finish the race despite having an achiles problem. Results: 84 Andrew Perry 36.18 92 Craig MacLellan 36.34 (pb) 98 Joe Perry 36.59 (pb) 312 Cleo Perry 42.12 1134 Rebecca Lee 50.10 (pb) 2946 Martin Perry 58.54

BRIDGWATER HALF MARATHON - SUNDAY 3 SEPTEMBER This was an outstanding day for our athletes with Ken Summers and Andy Trigg setting new club vet age records. Ken achieved a time of 1.38.56 and set a vet 65 record, breaking his own record set at Frome last year, whilst Andy with a time of 1.24.07 set a new vet 55 record, breaking Mike Hanson s record of 1.26.40 set at Newton Abbot in 2014. In the 10k race Mike Hanson ran 41.49 and wife Carol 2.04.21. PLYMOUTH COASTER 5 MILER - SUNDAY 3 SEPTEMBER In very wet conditions (which may have occurred at other races) Sam Yearling and Mike Miners did particulary well. Sam was 5th and 1st U17, whilst Mike Miners was 6th. Results: 5 6 28? Sam Yearling Mike Miners Mark Livermore Dave Lloyd 30.47 30.47 39.05?
