A LOOK AT NORTHERN IOWA Northern Iowa was picked to finished third in the Missouri Valley Conference behind 2013 Final Four participant Wichita State and Indiana State. The Panthers return two starters and nine letter winners from last season s 21-15 team, which finished its season with a loss to Weber State in the semifinals of the College Invitational Tournament. NIU has dispatched of Bemidji State and Dubuque in the team s two preseason exhibition contests this season. Junior forward Seth Tuttle led the team in scoring in both scrimmages with 21 points in each. Tuttle, a preseason All-MVC player, averaged 11.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game last season. The other returning starter is junior guard Deon Mitchell, who led the team in assists last season with 3.6 while adding 9.3 points per game. HISTORY vs. NORTHERN IOWA The Bobcats won the only regular season meeting between the schools on Dec. 20, 2011, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Two current Ohio seniors played well in the contest, as senior Nick Kellogg notched 11 points against the Panthers (3-5 3pt FG) while T.J. Hall added 10 points and four rebounds. HISTORY vs. MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE OPPONENTS The Green & White have posted a 24-19 all-time record against teams currently in the Missouri Valley Conference. Ohio s most common MVC opponent is new member Loyola-Chicago. Ohio has notched an 10-11 mark all-time against the Ramblers. Quote of the Week That s one thing we hang our hats on, sharing the ball. We were making team plays out there. Making the extra pass. Trying to get the ball inside. If you got an open shot, shoot the ball. If you don t, pass it to the next man. - Senior guard/forward Ricardo Johnson after Ohio distributed 19 assists against Ashland NEWS & NOTES 2013-14 SCHEDULE PRESENTS CHALLENGES This season s schedule features 14 games against teams that qualified for postseason play in 2012-13 and a marquee intra-state matchup with Ohio State. The Bobcats will suit up against the Buckeyes on Nov. 12 for the first time since the 1994-95 season. Ohio also will host A-10 favorite Massachusetts in December. The average 2012-13 RPI of Ohio s nonconference opponents is 152, compared to last season s average of 168. The league schedule will include 18 games for the first time since 2005-06. Jaivon Harris 2000-04 161 GOLDEN AGE OF OHIO HOOPS In what is quickly becoming the golden era of Ohio University men s basketball, the Bobcats have participated in post-season action for a school-record four-consecutive seasons (2 NCAA, 1 NIT, 1 CIT). Over the past two campaigns, the Bobcats have set a program record with 53 combined victories (24 in 2012-13; 29 in 2011-12). The team also has posted at least 22 wins in three of four seasons for just the second time in school history. INTIMIDATING FRONT LINE The Bobcats will feature one of the most active front lines in the MAC this season. Ohio returns one of its top defensive players in redshirt senior Jon Smith (Grove City, Ohio), who ranked seventh in the MAC in blocks last season and is eighth all-time at Ohio in that category (93 career blocks). In addition, the Cats welcome junior college transfer Maurice Ndour (Mbour, Senegal), who ranked 27th in the NJCAA in blocks and 13th in rebounding. Ndour averaged a double-double (16.2 ppg, 10.6 rpg) last season at Monroe College (N.Y.). TRAVELS WITH MAURICE Newcomer Maurice Ndour may well be the most worldly student-athlete to ever enter the Bobcat program. A native of Mbour, Senegal, Ndour left his home country as a teenager to pursue a high school basketball career in Japan. After four seasons at Okayama Gakugeikan on the island of Honshu, Ndour began his college career at Monroe, a junior college in New Rochelle, N.Y. As a result of his world travels, Ndour is fluent in five languages: English, French, Japanese and two African dialects (Wolof and Serer). Ndour was ranked No. 86 among junior college prospects by JUCORECRUITING. com this past year. BIG CATS The Bobcats will feature one of the tallest teams the program has seen over the past few years. Ohio scholarship players stand at an average of 77.5 inches, marking the highest player height average since the 2008-09 season (77.55 ). KELLOGG SETS SIGHTS ON 3-POINT RECORDS Senior guard Nick Kellogg (Westerville, Ohio) enters his final year in Athens with a chance to surpass a number of school records from beyond the arc. He s a basketball guy that has proven himself as a very successful coach in the MAC from his days. The program at Ohio has a great chance of continuing its success created by John Groce with Jim as their coach. Herb Sendek, Head Coach at Arizona State University; Coached with Christian (OH) Jim Christian is not only a fantastic coach and a tireless worker but a great person who will do an outstanding job at Ohio. As a former coach in the MAC he knows and understands all the great qualities the league has to offer, and will be a tremendous ambassador for Ohio University. Tom Crean, Head Coach at the University of Indiana; Coached with Christian at Western Kentucky It says a lot to be able to attract the all-time winningest coach in your conference s history to your school. Jim Christian and Ohio University should be a great match. The all-time winningest coach in Mid-American Conference history, Jim Christian became the 17th head coach in Ohio men s basketball history in April 2012. A two-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year, Christian has led his teams at Ohio, TCU and Kent State to a combined seven post-season appearances in 11 seasons on the bench. During his career, Christian has mentored three All-Americans, three MAC Players of the Year and 28 all-conference selections. In just his first season at the helm in Athens, Christian earned NABC District 14 Coach of the Year honors after leading the Bobcats to a share of their first MAC regular season title since the 1993-94 campaign. The Bobcats earned a berth in the National Invitation Tournament for the first time since 1995 and tied Ohio program records with 14 league wins and seven MAC road victories. Ohio s 24-10 record increased Christian s winning percentage while in the league to.704 (162-68), the best mark in MAC history by a sizable margin. Christian s squad led the nation in assists per game (17.5) and ranked seventh in the country in turnover margin (+4.7), behind All-America honorable mention point guard D.J. Cooper. The first MAC Player of the Year from Ohio since 1995, Cooper ranked eighth in the nation in assists per game and became the first player in NCAA Division I history to record at least 2,000 points, 900 assists, 600 rebounds and 300 steals in a career. In addition to Cooper s superb campaign, Christian mentored a duo of third team All-MAC selections in Walter Offutt and Reggie Keely. Under Christian s tutelage, both seniors earned All-MAC honors for the first time in their careers. Christian returned to the MAC in 2012 after completing four seasons as the men s basketball head coach at Texas Christian University. In his final season in Fort Worth (2011-12), he led the Horned Frogs to their first postseason appearance since 2005. He coached six All-Mountain West Conference honorees, including first-team choice Hank Thorns Jr. and third-team pick J.R. Cadot. Thorns also appeared on the watch list for the Bob Cousy Award presented to the nation s top point guard and was named to the All-District 17 Second Team by the NABC. Thorns led TCU in 2011-12 in scoring (13.5 ppg), assists (4.66 apg) and 3-pointers (72). He also produced one of the top seasons ever for a TCU point guard in 2010-11, as he finished as the only individual ranked among the nation s top-12 players in both assists per game (No. 4) and assist-turnover ratio (No. 12). To begin his tenure at TCU, Christian became the third coach in program history to win his first game as head coach and guided the Frogs to significant victories during the 2008-09 campaign, including home triumphs over Wichita State, UNLV, SMU and Colorado State. TCU notched its first six-game winning streak since the 1998-99 campaign and recorded nine-consecutive victories at home for the first time in over a decade. Christian came to TCU after serving as the head men s basketball coach (2002-08) for six seasons, where he won at least 20 games in each campaign. In his six seasons as head coach of the Golden Flashes, Christian climbed to second place on the all-time career victories list, only 10 triumphs shy of the record. Under the guidance of Christian, the Golden Flashes garnered five postseason appearances in six campaigns, including a pair of trips to the NCAA Tournament (2006,. Not only was the former Kent State head coach selected as the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in two of his final three seasons, but Christian also led his team to its first-ever top-25 ranking after peaking at 23rd in the nation in the Associated Press poll and 24th in the ESPN/USA Today poll. While the Golden Flashes excelled in non-conference action, Christian s teams saved their best games for Mid-American Conference opponents as Kent State recorded a 79-28 record (.738 winning percentage) while never finishing lower than second in the East Division during his six-year tenure.
