October 12, 2018 The Talon Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Football Homecoming 2018 Was a Big Top Success During the week of September 14th, the Burns FlatDill City high school came together through school spirit. It was Homecoming week, and one to remember in the yearbooks. The theme for the week was Circus. The high school itself saw record participation in spirit dress-up days, as well as an improvement in atmosphere. During the class color dress-up competition, nearly every member of the Senior, Junior, and Sophomore class participated. The entire cafeteria was filled will colors representing each grade. The Junior class won the competition with outstanding numbers. On Thursday, the Senior class reigned victorious after the parade and float competition with a third win. After the parade followed the Powder Puff football that saw a new level of aggression among the ladies. With a first-quarter lead, the Seniors and Sophomores won the game against the Juniors and Freshmen. Friday afternoon saw one of the most heated pep rally in years! Organized by the BF-DC Cheerleaders, the pep rally had games for the Homecoming candidates: Kayela Staples, Riley John- son, Makia Maxey, Luis Margerum, Tori Cline, and Hunter Gearhart. The Seniors and Juniors both brought noise-makers and confetti to gain an advantage. The coveted spirit stick was won by the Junior class with an impressive class chant. The football game started after the coronation ceremony of the Homecoming queen and king. Makia Maxey, a Junior, and Riley Johnson, a Senior, were crowned queen and king. The flower girls were Lynzee Elswick and Lucy Fite. The crown bearer was Tanner Reeve. During halftime of the game, Sass Blazer, a Pre-K teacher at Will Rogers Elementary, was brought onto the field and welcomed by a massive round of applause. The Cheerleaders walked throughout the stands with donation buckets to help pay for Sass s medical bills. At the game, t-shirts, hats, and bracelets were sold for her benefit. These will continue to be sold at home football games and on her Sass Strong Facebook page. October 12, 2018 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Volume 51 Number 2 Seniors of the Month of September Seniors of the Month of October Page 2 Students of the Month is the female Senior Eagle of the Month of September. She is the daughter of Brian and Anna Benedict. She is the granddaughter of Cleo Ainsworth and Reina Wolfe. Her siblings are Tori and Blake Mandrell. She has participated in golf, Academic Team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Government Club, Student Council, and newspaper. Alexa has received awards for University Scholar at SWOSU, Brown O Haver Golf Scholarship recipient, 6 th place in 2A Golf at State, and the Principal and Superintendents Honor Rolls. She has completed community service by helping with the Veterans Day Program and volunteering at OU Medical in Oklahoma City. Her future plans are to play College Golf and to become a physician s assistant. Her fondest high school memory is playing at the Oklahoma State Golf Tournament and hitting the same tree three times in a row. Alexa said, I didn t get paid for the landscaping. Donovan Webb is the male Senior Eagle of the Month of September. He is the son of Donald and Crystal Webb. He is the grandson of Marva and Dwain Webb and Deb and the late Phil Gordon. He has one sister Katelyn Webb and two brother Dalton Webb and Braden Webb. Donovan has participated in basketball, baseball, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Farmers of America, History Day, and band. He has been honored to sing at the National FFA Convention twice and he has been a member of the State of Oklahoma FFA Chorus for 3 years. He has received awards for Principals Honor Roll, Student of the Month, and All Conference in baseball. He has completed community service by campaigning for State Representative Russ and for County Assessor Krystal Uecke. He has also helped with the basketball food drive. Donovan plans for after graduation is to become a minister and opening a barber shop. His favorite memory of high school is the summer days at Highwalkers. Lorsa Hughes is the female Senior Eagle of the Month of October. She is the daughter of Kandii Hughes and the late Ron Hughes. Her grandparents are Richard and Betty Hughes, J.W. and Gail Skipworth and the late Sue Hughes. She has one sister Jordan Hughes who graduated from BF-DC High School. She has participated in Future Farmers of America, Golf, History Day, Student Council, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She has received awards for Student of the Month, Student of Today, Congress of Future Medical Leaders Award of Excellence, and Honor Roll. She has completed community service by helping campaign for Dennis Dugger, helping at the Washita County Petting Zoo, and helping with many student council activities. She plans to attend OSU in Stillwater CASNR for pre-vet school. She then plans to come back to Western Oklahoma after vet school a opening a clinic. Her favorite memories are the hunting trips at the deer lease with her dad and meeting Trace Maddox for the first time. Landon Ringo is the male Senior Eagle of the Month of October. He is the son of Sheila and LeVoy Ringo. He is the grandson of the late Claude and Airlene Ringo and Susie Carli and the late Lou Carli. He has one sister Devon Bonewitz who is married to Michael Bonewitz. He has one very sweet niece, Maybalee Bonewitz. Landon has participated in Future Farmers of America, basketball, golf, student council, Fellowship of Student Athletes, newspaper, and is an office aid. He has received awards for Principals Honor Roll, Top Salesman in FFA (Blue and Gold products), and Student of the Month. He has completed community service by helping with the Veterans Day Program, helping with the Washita County Petting Zoo, putting Christmas lights in the Burns Flat park, and collecting for the basketball food drive. He plans after graduation is to work on his family s farm, raising show cattle and working cattle. His favorite memories of high school are working on the parade floats and hanging out with friends. He is very proud that he was able to buy his first farm while still in high school and he planted his first crop of wheat this fall. BF-DC Student Council Planned and Lead Successful Homecoming Week 2018 Student Council had an extremely successful Homecoming week. The entire school had high numbers of participation! The officer team was exceptionally proud of the school spirit shown throughout the week. The parade was a success throughout the town. The dance had a good number of students in attendance. Jr. High Student of the Month September At the pep rally, the Juniors, yet again, clutched the Spirit Stick. The gym trembled with noise makers, stomping feet, and the band playing as the cheerleaders urged each class to get louder and louder to win the coveted Spirit Stick. The powderpuff football game was one of the best in recent years. The girls competing worked hard to earn touchdowns and grab flags. In the end, the Seniors and Sophomores were the winners of the game. The floats were like attending an actual circus and each class had an amazing interpretation of the theme. The Senior class won the float contest and won the homecoming week days with highest participation percentage. The Junior class was in close second place to the Seniors. Jr. High Student of the Month October Sienna Garcia Ethan Hose Luke Schneberger Bailey Beggs Jacee Foley Gabrielle Garcia Makia Maxey is the Student of the Month for September. She is in the 11 th grade. Makia is the daughter of Tammy and Jason Maxey and the granddaughter of Ann and Randy Maxey and Joy and Charles Shockley. She has two siblings Jace Maxey and Justice Ricketts. She has participated in 4-H, Student Council, Fellowship of Student Athletes, Class Officer, cross country, basketball, and track. `She has completed community service by working with the other 4-H students making bibs to donate to the nursing home in Cordell for Valentine s Day. Makia plans to college at the University of Oklahoma and getting her law degree to become a lawyer. Her fondest high school memory is when Mrs. Schneberger came running to their meeting spot at cross country regionals and shouted We re going to state. Makia said I cried tears of joy and cried because we had another week of practice. Grace Schneberger is the Student of the Month of October. She is in the 10 th grade. Grace is the daughter of Lori and Brian Schneberger and the granddaughter of Patricia and Eldred Schneberger and the late Gloria and the late Clayton Entz. She had 4 siblings Jacob, Lilly, Luke and Faith Schneberger. She has participated in cross country, track, basketball, Future Farmers of America, Academic Team, Student Council, and Fellowship of student Athletes. She has received awards for Superintendents Honor Roll, student of the month, 2 nd place in the state for FFA Creed, State qualifier in cross country, Cross Country State of Oklahoma Academic Champion, and a member of the Froshmore Academic State Championship team. She has completed community service by helping with the Backpack Ministry at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She also helped to put lights up in the Burns Flat park with FFA. She plans to go to Oklahoma State University in Stillwater and study molecular biology to become an optometrist. He fondest memory is of taking a family vacation to Florida in 2012 with all of her family and her best friends family.
October 12, 2018 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools 2nd Grade News The Will Rogers Elementary 2nd grade students had lots of fun at the Will Rogers Fall Carnival. They played games and ate a great deal of candy and goodies. The second graders visited P Bar Farm on September 27th. The students went through the maze, went on a hayride and a train ride. They also picked pumpkins and fed and petted farm animals. The star students for second grade in September were Kayleigh Casses and Carolina Presley. The leaders for 2A were Kadence Garner, Elijah Dougherty, Joanna Croslin, and Sam Crabb. The classroom helpers for 2B were Haley Holmes, Nathan Glass, Libby Spence, Jordan Balch, Ellie Fisher, Chevi Woods, Paisley Parrot and Cameron Raleigh. For Constitution Day the 2A students wrote their spelling words using a quill and ink well. The 2B students had special visitors for their show and tell. They were visited by a bunny, a chicken, and a turtle. Junior 4-H and Cloverbud News On Wednesday, September 12th the Junior 4-Hers met and elected Officers. They also made Mrs. Balzer a get well card. 4-H is holding their Annual Bean Supper on Monday October 29th. Https://ok.4honline.com The next Cloverbud and Junior 4-H meeting will be Friday, November 2nd Liliana Baez Jr. 4-H Reporter 4th Grade Students Enjoying Classes Mrs. Folsom's fourth graders are working on AR goals and learning about the regions of the United States. They gained two new classmates in September. The 4th graders are enjoying counseling and primetime presented by Mrs. Dixon and Mrs. Davis. They are also enjoying their health classes presented by Ms. Hargis. Mrs. Merky s fourth grade science and math classes have been studying land and water. The students will be visiting the Rocky Lake Bridge Project being completed by the State of Oklahoma. The students will explore the restoration of the wetlands. The next visit will be October 9th. The students informed the audience about all the amazing people of Oklahoma! Several songs written by Oklahomans were shared including "Back in the Saddle Again" by Gene Autry who was raised in Oklahoma and "Purple People Eater" by actor/singer Sheb Wooley from Erick. The awesome purple people eater was Douglas Yates. The students' favorite was the Hanson brothers' song, "I Will Come to You." The Hanson's, whose "Mmbop" was number one in seven countries at one time, are from Tulsa. Special singers were Elizabeth Dye, Cloe Fuentez, Rhyan Garcia, Kyndal Longberry, Izabella Sweetman, and Paislee Tate for Woody Guthrie's "So Long, It's Been Good to Know You" which told of the Dust Bowl. Other special singers were Juliann Harrison, Peyton Ludwig, Kiah Newberry, and Alexis Parker. Each of the students had speaking parts and did a great job telling about famous Oklahomans! Students learned that the high school science teacher, Chris Price, wrote the Emmy Award-Winning "That Lovin' You Feelin' Again" sung as a duet by Roy Orbison and Emmy Lou Harris. The third grade is Oklahoma proud of this state! A big thanks goes to the third grade teachers, Ms. Dean and Mrs. Giles! Mrs. Fite directed the program. Shae Hess Drew Johnson 5th Grade Students Writing Stories Kindergarten Students Learn About Apples The month of September was very busy for the kindergarten students. They completed an abundance of apple themed lessons. They enjoyed an apple tasting lesson and graphed the results of everyone s favorite apples. The students completed apple crafts, wore Johnny Apple Seed hats and made apple pies for Johnny Apple Seed day. The students thought it was a great month and are looking forward the activities planned for October. Volume 51 Number 2 T-1 Students Read with 5th Graders September has flown by, but the students have had a great time in T-1. They have been talking about Johnny Appleseed and enjoying several activities that revolve around the sweet and juicy apple. Their activities began with making paper apples and labeling all of the parts. They tasted Honey Crisp, Fuji, and Granny Smith apples. The class favorite was the Honey Crisp. Another one of their actives was cutting an apple in half and finding a star. They finished off the Johnny Appleseed celebration making apple pies and eating them outside. This month they also began reading with Mrs. McBee's 5th grade class. They had so much fun listening to them read to the class and then they enjoyed reading to the 5th grade students. The T-1 students wanted to say Thanks for sharing your class with us Mrs. McBee. Anna Yates The fifth grade students are in their second week of the D.A.R.E program. D.A.R.E is a 10 week program taught by officer Sunny Segler. During this class, students learn how to deal with peer pressure, resistance strategies, and much more. It is not only educational but Officer Segler makes it fun for them. This week they will be learning how to make safe and responsible choices. It is the goal of D.A.R.E to help young people to say no to drugs and be able to make good decisions when faced with the challenges of being a teen. The fifth grade students are working very hard at writing. They spent the first few weeks learning what it takes to make good sentences. After practicing writing sentences weekly they are now moving on to writing stories. Their class is divided into groups of four students each and together they are writing we are writing stories. They must not only author the stories but they must illustrate them too. When they are complete, they will put together their own copy of the story in a book. After all the stories are done they will take their books and read them to Mrs. Raleigh s T1 class. Dakota Kluth
October 12, 2018 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Seniors will go to Elk City October, 22nd for the Western Oklahoma Education Expo. They will leave on buses at 10 a.m. After the expo, they will grab lunch before they head back. Students need to remember the blood drive on October 24th. This year, it will be in the new gym lobby. After donating blood, the donor will receive either an OSU or OU t-shirt. Fall activity recognition night for seniors is on November 2nd at the football game. All Sophomores will take the Pre-ACT November 8th with either Mrs. Sturgeon, Mrs. Stewart, or Mrs. Hileman. 7th Grade News 8th Grade News The 7th grade class is learning like terms and inequalities in their math class. In English they are learning end marks and they are reading Mother and Daughter. In science they are learning about the state of matter. They are reading about immigrants in geography. In communication skills they are presenting their chosen states. They are practicing veteran day songs in vocal. In band they are working on their marching show for the away game at Carnegie. In art they are watching the movie Coco. The eight grade students are learning about graphs and slopes in their math class. In English they are working on literary terms and punctuation. In science they are working on chemical equations and in history they are learning about the Revolutionary War. The eighth graders are very happy that the BF-DC JH football team is undefeated. They have won all five of their games! Go Eagles!! Senior News Many seniors accomplished incredible things this year. was chosen to be the recipient of the Brown O Haver Golf Scholarship worth $1,500. Donovan Webb, Robert Cline, and Aaron Schmidt competed with the BF-DC band at the Oklahoma State Fair and placed 3rd out of 52. Lorsa Hughes, Donovan Webb, and Landon Ringo showed their livestock at the Tulsa State Fair. Lorsa showed her two lambs, Shrek and Rumble. Donovan showed his three meat chickens with the help of Landon. Kayela Staples and Donovan Webb competed October 4th in the Hobart Cross Country meet. Kayela medaled 13th place, and Donovan medaled 21st place. Robert Cline and Aaron Schmidt went to Honor Choir try outs. Aaron Schmidt and attended the OGPAC meet in Hobart with the other Academic team members. The team left undefeated for the first half of the meet. Seniors applied for FAFSA October 1st. Soon, they will be fitted for their cap and gowns. Nick Jones 6th Grade News The sixth grade class is learning how to multiply fractions in math. In science they are having fun learning about electrical currents. In social studies they are learning about pollution and how it effects the environment. In Spanish the students are enjoying their online classroom. The sophomores are looking forward to their November field trip to the Stafford Air and Space Museum in Weatherford. Jessica Briggs Sophomore Reporter Several 4-H members attended the Washita County commissioners meeting on Monday October 1st for the proclamation signing for National 4-H week. They each told a little about their 4-H project and thanked the Commissioners for their continued support. 4-H will be having their Bean Supper and Carnival fundraiser on October 29th so please get in touch with one of the junior or senior 4Hers to purchase your bean supper tickets for only $5.00. The Bean Supper and Carnival are the big fundraiser for Washita County 4-H. The 4-H Clubs appreciates all of the support they receive from the communities and parents. It will be held in the gym on November 11th, 2018. The Government Club will feed the veterans after the program and everyone who has served is welcomed. The BF-DC History Day students went to the Clinton Public Library on Wednesday, September 26 for Research on their History Day project. The group consists of Lorsa Hughes, Donovan Webb, Riley Johnson, Kayela Staples and Jordan Mason. The students are researching Child Labor and will do a Performance for competition. They will be going to the Oklahoma Historical Society on October 24 to Continue their research. The History Day students are selling biscuits, gravy and hash brown on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board across from Mrs. Stewart s room. October 12, 2018 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Volume 51 Number 2 Page 5 Book Review Misery by Stephen King is a book definitely worth reading. The book is about an author named Paul Sheldon who lives in the mountainous regions of Colorado. Whenever he finishes writing a book, he drives to New York to have it edited and published. As he begins his journey to New York to publish one of his new books, it starts heavily snowing which causes his car to lose traction to the road and fly off the snowy mountain. He does not die, but he does receive a multitude of injuries such as fractured tibias in his legs, a fractured fibula in one leg, and a broken arm along with a few internal injuries one of which being broken ribs. Just as death was on the horizon, Paul gets saved by a crazy fan of his named Annie Wilkes who was following him once he left his house. She brings him back to her house where he has no access to the outside world. She brought him back to her house due to the roads being incapable of being driven on. As he starts getting better, he notices she is an obsessed fan and won t let him leave. He then has to figure out how to escape and get back to his normal life which leads to a crazy ending. October 12, 2018 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Volume 51 Number 2 Academic Teams Compete and Win The Junior High Academic team traveled to Cheyenne on September 19th for the Oklahoma Great Plains Academic Conference (OGPAC) meet. The team competed against other western Oklahoma schools. They left the meet with seven wins and one loss. The first meet for the junior high team was a success which may lead to more wins! On October 8th the team hosted Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) Districts here in Burns Flat and the results will be announced in a later newspaper. BF-DC Band and Choir News The Burns Flat-Dill City band went to the Oklahoma State Fair Band Day and competed in the parade marching competition. The band received 3 rd place in class 2a bands. The Burns Flat-Dill City band has been marching at halftime of the high school football games. Their theme this year is Going to the Movies with John Williams. The Burns Flat-Dill City choir students are auditioning for honor choir hosted by the Western Oklahoma Choral Director s Association. Students who audition and make the choir will be performing in EIK city at 7:00 p.m. at the performing arts center. Donovan Young Mighty Eagles Compete in Horseshoes On Friday, September 28, the Mighty Eagles attended their first competition for the 2018-2019 school year. They traveled to Yukon for the horseshoe competition. Only three Mighty Eagles competed: Erica Noyes, Justin Davis and Katy Horne (both BF-DC graduates). Erica finished in 4 th place while Justin and Katy each had a third place finish. The Mighty Eagles would like to thank Josie Jackson for attending and helping. Their next competition will be Saturday, October 13th in El Reno for bowling. Landon Ringo Cross Country News The BF-DC Cross Country teams competed at the Weatherford Cross Country meet on September 8 th. The high school girls ran 2 miles and had 64 runners; Jordan Mason placed 37 th, and Makia Maxey placed 44 th. The middle school girls ran 2400 meters and had 60 runners; Logan Mooney placed 17 th, Gabbi Espinosa placed 28 th, and Joey Mooney placed 43 rd. The high school boys ran a 5k and had 69 runners; Dalton Webb placed 9 th, Josh Mooney placed 42 nd, and Darius Glass placed 63 rd. The middle school boys ran 2 miles and had 58 runners; Sebastian Huffmaster, Nick Margerum placed 24 th, Nickolas Kemp placed 48 th, and Kaden Williams placed 58 th. Brock Bennett FCA News The Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been hosting a prayer circle every Friday during encore. The organization has seen growing numbers every Friday with students praying and requesting prayers for their family. On September 26th, the organization had a rainy See You at the Pole in the morning before school. The nationally participated day is where students pray before school around a flag pole. The students had to gather in the old gym because of the rain. Afterwards, the officer team distributed Lifebooks, which contain a book from the New Testament, into the school lockers. Members need to remember to pay their $15 dues for the t-shirts by October 15th. April 6th the FCA students will take a field trip to watch the OKC Dodgers play baseball. The tickets will cost $20 with all you can eat included. Members need to get their money to Mr. Foley before then. Football News The Burns Flat-Dill City HS football team s homecoming game was on Friday September 14 th against Laverne. They put up a good game but sadly they were defeated 14-46. On Friday September 28 th BF-DC played away against Ringwood and ended up sweeping them with the score of 54-8. The Eagles played a great game. Go Eagles! The Burns Flat-Dill City JH football team is doing great this year as they are undefeated 5-0. They played home against Seiling on Monday September 17 th and won the game with the score of 42-14. The boys played a terrific game. The JH boys played their 4 th game away against Cyril on Monday September 24 th. They defeated Cyril with the score 40-24. They re doing better and better every game. They played their 5 th game away against Snyder on October 1 st and they defeated them with the score of 40-22. Go Eagles! Keep up the hard work and bringing home great wins. Robert Summers Softball News Page 6 The Lady Eagles softball team came up short in Districts, but they lost to a very good Canute Trojanette team that ended up advancing to the State Tournament and playing in the Quarterfinals! The first inning of the game was perfect defensively. But eventually those good hitting teams will find their timing and get base hits. Nothing you can do about that. Head Coach Ashton Ellis had a lot to say about her team when asked about their Districts performance and about her thoughts on the season. These girls worked really hard, day in and day out overall. Some girls were so consistent that I didn t praise them as much as I should have. They re those girls that are constants for you. They work hard every day and they do little things right. I ve got to get better about praising them more. Coach Ellis is looking forward to shifting gear and coaching basketball this year, but has high hopes and expectations for the spring softball season. Make sure you tell one of the Lady Eagles how proud of them you are for sticking it out and working hard all fall! Michaela Knight
