O s vs. Royals The Royals took last night s opener of this weekend set, KC s sixth win in its last seven games against the Orioles here in Kauffman Stadium, not including the two in the 2014 ALCS... the Royals are 207-263 all-time vs. the O s, including a 116-122 deficit in Kansas City, but hold a 109-105 advantage in The K. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 4/22 KC W, 4-2 Young Gallardo 29,546 4/23 KC 4/24 KC 6/6 @ Balt 6/7 @ Balt 6/8 @ Balt QUICK STRIKE ENOUGH FOR YOUNG & PEN--The Royals plated a trio of first inning runs, each reaching safely on the first three pitches seen, giving Chris Young and the KC bullpen enough of an advantage en route to a 4-2 victory in the series opener vs. the Orioles...Alcides Escobar singled on the first pitch from Yovani Gallardo, then Mike Moustakas homered on the second, followed immediately by a Lorenzo Cain single and he scored on a Kendrys Morales double...that would be enough for Young and the pen, with C.Y. working the first 6.0 frames allowing just four hits and two runs with a walk and 10 strikeouts, his first double-digit strikeout game in eight years...luke Hochevar, Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis each contributed a scoreless frame with Davis needed just eight pitches to end the affair and earn his seventh save...moustakas continued his red hot week, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and his sixth homer, second in as many nights...the win was KC s third in its last four games and upped the Royals to an 11-5 start to the year, the top record in the A.L. MOOSE EN FUEGO--Third baseman Mike Moustakas entered last Sunday s game in Oakland with a.214 early season average, but he has flipped the script in his last five games, hitting safely in each at a.450 clip (9-for-20) with three doubles and three home runs for a 1.050 slugging pct. in that span...he has upped his season average 76 points to its present.290 mark entering tonight s play...he enters tonight tied for the A.L. lead in home runs with six, a figure he didn t attain last year until June 16 in his 58th game...mike has homered 17 times since last August 20, which are the third most behind only Chris Davis and Edwin Encarnacion with 18 each...moustakas has turned into a real thorn in the backside of the Orioles, hitting.469 (15-for-32) with seven runs, four doubles, five home runs and 21 RBI in his last eight games vs. Baltimore, while slugging at a 1.063 clip...moose has knocked in 12 runs in Kansas City s last two wins over the O s, highlighted by a team record nine RBI last September 12 in Oriole Park. STARTING STAFF EXCELLING--Chris Young s 6.0-inning stint last night was yet another in what s becoming a solid stretch of work by Kansas City starting pitchers, with the Royals entering tonight s action on top of the American League among starting staffs in fewest hits allowed (76), fewest runs allowed (30) and fewest earned runs surrendered (29)... entering tonight second in the loop in starters ERA with a 2.85 mark (Chicago leads at 2.69)...Kansas City s starters have limited opposing hitters to a collective.224 average, which ranks second to Chicago s.213 mark...edinson Volquez and Ian Kennedy find themselves among the ERA elite in the A.L., with Volky sixth with his 1.46 mark and Kennedy fourth at 1.35. EXTENDED ROAD WORK AHEAD--Kansas City will depart on its first West Coast swing following tomorrow s homestand finale with Baltimore, making threegame stops in Anaheim and Seattle...the Royals will then return home for just a three-game series against the A.L. East leading Washington Nationals (May 2-4), then hit the road again for another weeklong journey through Cleveland (3) and New York (4)...all told, after Sunday s game with the O s, Kansas City will play 13 of its next 16 games away from Kauffman Stadium...the good news is that once that stretch ends, KC will host 13 of its next 19 contests at The K...as for the upcoming journey, the Royals look to continue the success they had over the Halos last year, taking six of seven, including a 3-0 visit to Angel Stadium in April... KC still trails the all-time series by a 279-284 margin, but actually possess a 148-137 advantage in Anaheim. TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Tyler Wilson (0-0, 1.13) vs. RHP Kris Medlen (1-0, 2.38) 2015 2014 Career 2016 2015 Career Tyler Wilson vs. Royals first career appearance Major League Record 0-0 (1.13 ERA) 2-2 2-2 Kris Medlen vs. Orioles 1-0 - 1-0 Major League Record 1-0 (2.38 ERA) 6-2 41-22 KRIS MEDLEN makes his third start of the year, 72nd of his career and 170th overall appearance...the 30-year-old right-hander faces the Orioles for the fourth time, making his second start in as many seasons...he is in the second of a two-year deal that includes a mutual option for 2017. NO DECISION IN QUALITY START--Kris recorded his first quality start of the season last Sunday in Oakland, but it was not enough to garner a win as the A s rallied for a 3-2 triumph...he allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 6.1 innings...he kept the A s hitless through the first three innings, but surrendered an unearned run in the fourth when a passed ball on a Chris Coghlan strike out allowed Coco Crisp to score with two outs...medlen was also charged with another run in the seventh Coghlan s ground-rule double ended his day, then Jed Lowrie drove the game-tying run home with an RBI single off reliever Kelvin Herrera...Kris two hits allowed were his fewest in a start of 6.0 innings or more since working 8.0 frames in a 1-0 win over Philadelphia on September 27, 2013, his final regular season outing with Atlanta. 2015 IN REVIEW--Kris returned to a big league mound for the first time since 2013, coming back from a second Tommy John operation on March 19, 2014... he rejoined the Royals after the All-Star break, going 6-2 with a 4.01 ERA...he earned his first victory in a KC uniform on August 18 at Cincinnati, tossing a scoreless 12th, before the KC tallied two runs in the 13th of a 3-1 win...made his first start of the year on August 24, tossing 6.0 innings in a 6-3 triumph over these Orioles and remained in the rotation throughout the rest of the regular season...the right-hander made two relief appearances during the Royals postseason run, which included a scoreless inning against the Mets in Game #3 of the World Series. AMONG THE BEST RECENTLY--Despite missing nearly a year-and-a-half following Tommy John surgery in 2014, Kris has posted numbers comparable to the best pitchers in baseball since the 2012 All-Star break...in that span, his.689 winning percentage (31-14) ranks fifth among hurlers that have at least 40 decisions... while his 2.66 ERA in that time is also fifth in the Majors (minimum 350.0 IP), while his 1.13 WHIP ranks 16th. VS. BALTIMORE--Medlen will make his fourth appearance and second start against the O s, entering at 1-0 with a 5.25 ERA (7 ER in 12.0 IP)...he made his first start as a Royal vs. Baltimore last August 24, allowing three runs on five hits over 6.0 innings to earn a 6-3 victory...he also made a pair of relief appearances against the club with Atlanta...the righty went 2-0 with a 3.52 ERA in four appearances and two starts against A.L. East foes in 2015. EARLY WORK--Due to injuries, tonight marks Medlen s eighth career start and 26th overall appearance all-time in April...despite a 2-4 record in the month, Kris has posted solid numbers, including a 2.74 ERA (21 ER in 69.0 IP), a 1.25 WHIP and a.247 opponents average. HOME WORK--Kris makes his first home start of the year and seventh overall appearance at The K in a Royals uniform...last season he was 1-2 here with a 6.99 ERA, which was the result of two lopsided losses...overall in his career, Medlen is 17-13 with a 2.86 ERA in 85 outings and 34 starts at home.
