COOL PAPA WHIT--On the day that he was honored by the Negro Leagues Museum with the Cool Papa Bell award, given annually to the American League stolen base leader, Whit Merrifield ignited the Kansas City offense with three stolen bases in Sunday s series-clinching win over the Tigers, his second career threesteal game (July 2, 2017 vs. Minnesota)...Merrifield, who led the A.L. with 34 thefts last year, pilfered third base twice on Sunday in both the first and third innings... he now has 14 career steals of third base (in 15 tries) to break a tie with Mike Trout while matching Elvis Andrus and Jose Ramirez for third most in the league since Merrifield debuted in 2016...Whit has picked it up of late on the base paths with six thefts in his last 11 games after swiping one bag in the first 21. SOLER BACK ON BASE--Right fielder Jorge Soler, who was kept off the base paths on Saturday for the first time in 20 games, returned to reaching base on Sunday with a pair of hits and a walk...soler has now hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games at a.370 clip (17-for-46) with five doubles, three home runs, eight runs scored, 10 driven in, seven walks, a hit by pitch with a.463 on-base pct. and 1.137 OPS during his hitting streak...his 20 walks on the year not only lead the Royals, but rank tied for fifth in the league, while his.425 on-base pct. is tied for fourth...since snapping an 0-for-11 start to the year, he has batted.344 (32-for-93) while reaching safely in 24 of his last 26 games with nine doubles, four homers, 17 walks, two hit by pitches and a.455 on-base pct. and.570 slugging pct. which adds up to a 1.025 OPS. DUPE REMAINS PERFECT--Our own Bill Duplissea made good on his lone replay review at home on Friday night, when James McCann was called safe on a stolen base attempt in the seventh inning...after a very quick 32-second delay, New York overturned the call on the field and upped Dupe s record to 9-for-9 on the year, making the Royals the only team to have a perfect start to their replay review season...dupe has made good on 68% of his challenges in his career (108-for- 160), which ranks among the best, including a Major League best 73% success rate over the last three seasons (61-for-84). NEXT STOP, CLEVELAND--The Royals will pay their second visit of the year to Cleveland starting Friday night to end this six-game journey...based on the forecast it will be a far cry from the first stop during the second weekend of the season when the temperature never left the 30 s during a 1-2 stop at Progressive Field...the upcoming visit features a 6:10 (KC time) affair on Friday, followed by 3:10 on Saturday and 12:10 finale on Sunday. NOT JUST THE TEAM S 50TH SEASON--One common denominator with the Royals and this 50th season of baseball in Kansas City is Hall of Fame announcer Denny Matthews, who was in the booth with Buddy Blattner on April 8, 1969 and is once again calling the play-by-play during this milestone season...the Ford Frick Award winner in Cooperstown, NY in 2007, Matthews has been the one constant since the franchise came to be in 69...with this his 50th season, he trails only Los Angeles Dodger broadcasting icons Vin Scully (67 years prior to retiring) and Jaime Jarrin (59th season). RULE 5 HURLERS ON ROSTER--The Royals are carrying a pair of Rule 5 acquisitions on the roster with right-handed hurlers Brad Keller and Burch Smith...Keller, 22, was selected in last December s Rule 5 draft from Arizona by Cincinnati and then dealt to KC, while the 28-year old Smith was acquired from the New York Mets after being selected in the draft...keller spent the year in AA Jackson last year, while Smith has big league time with San Diego in 2013. INTERLEAGUE FOES--The Royals opened interleague for 2018 with a pair of losses to the Brewers on April 24-25...Kansas City is playing the National League Central this summer with a 2-game set still slated for Miller Park in June, while there will also be a 2-game home & home vs. Cincinnati and a home & home 3-game series with St. Louis...also on the slate is a 3-game series in Kauffman Stadium against the Chicago Cubs (August 6-8) and 3-game road trip to Pittsburgh (September 17-19)...the next work against National League competition will be on May 21-23 in Busch Stadium. vs. Orioles (2017) vs. Orioles (career) On Road (career) Bundy (career) Cashner (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Almonte - - - - -.250 4 1 0 0.206 457 94 6 40.500 2 1 0 0.667 3 2 0 2 Butera.750 4 3 1 2.255 51 13 1 10.206 554 114 13 59.000 1 0 0 0 - - - - - Cuthbert - - - - -.273 11 3 0 0.242 368 89 10 22 - - - - -.333 3 1 0 0 Duda.167 24 4 1 4.213 47 10 2 6.238 1409 336 65 216 - - - - -.200 10 2 0 1 Escobar.174 23 4 0 1.219 192 42 0 10.257 2560 657 20 199.000 7 0 0 0.167 8 1 0 0 Goins.214 42 9 1 3.249 169 42 2 12.239 674 161 9 73.000 5 0 0 0 - - - - - Gordon.143 14 2 0 0.275 247 68 14 36.257 2700 693 83 283.200 5 1 0 0.143 7 1 0 0 Jay.125 8 1 0 0.310 29 9 2 7.274 1653 453 19 152 - - - - -.000 1 0 0 0 Merrifield.227 22 5 0 1.235 34 8 0 1.275 498 137 9 48.167 6 1 0 1 - - - - - Moustakas.217 23 5 1 4.252 143 36 9 33.250 1669 417 72 205.333 6 2 0 1.250 4 1 0 1 Perez.158 19 3 0 2.223 121 27 3 16.272 1615 440 70 221.000 6 0 0 0.111 9 1 0 0 Soler.300 10 3 1 1.300 10 3 1 1.242 405 98 15 54.000 2 0 0 0.333 3 1 0 1 Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
